Retirement Time

Had to get a second molar extraction. It was causing sinus, inner ear stuffiness, and lymph issues on the left side of my head (the side that the 100 pound compactor door slammed shut on). Cost $160 for two visits and $20 that paid for antibiotics.
Recovering nicely so far. Can chew on the right side.

Got the leaves raked up into a pile around the elm tree yesterday. Going to take one green cartful a week for pickup at the curb.
The rain gage showed 03.58” at 12:49am and the report three hours later was missing so hopefully it was fixed. I know we had a little overnight and supposed to get more over the next 48 hours but 03.58” in an hour can’t be correct.
Also did a little weeding front and back and put the carts out there early.
Making a grocery list for New Years as the stores will be closed.
 
Did a little bit of weeding between storms. Neighbor’s dogs got out and knocked down our south gate while they were at the Colorado River. He fixed it when he returned so now just have to pick up giant piles of dootie left by the uninvited trio. Got most of the roses pruned and I’ll get the backyard leaves picked up when it dries out some.
 
An air tanker and a skycrane are scrambling from Ryan Field. Maybe just a drill or exercise to warm up for hotter weather next week, as the Grumman Tracker went in several different directions circling over previous fire locations as if giving some politicians a bird’s eye view of charred hillsides. Probably to provide a spiel for funding in advance of the wildfire season.

Now an actual incident only 3.4 miles east of here at Highway 74 and Georgia Ave. Heard the aircraft and a few sirens from trucks from the Little Lake Fire Station. No smoke visible here at the house. Wind currently calm. Three fixed wing fighting the fire: two S2 Trackers dropping water and retardant and an OV10 Bronco doing orbital air traffic control.
Edit: Must have knocked it down quickly as now there’s just a lone Blackhawk helicopter left, and I just heard it heading west towards Ryan Field.

Just took out the trash and retrieved the mail. As I was watching the sprinklers I noticed that it seemed like earthquake weather.
Very thin high clouds, no wind, unusually quiet. No birds chirping or dogs barking. I call those conditions earthquake weather, even though it probably doesn’t have anything to do with earthquakes.
If the big one doesn’t hit, I’ll probably spend Father’s Day mowing the lawn.

Got the lawn mowed today and soon as I got finished the air tanker traffic spiked towards Gilman Springs. Four or five aircraft battling a blaze of 250 acres known as the Lisa Fire. Was a little breezy so they are hitting it with all they’ve got.
Four helicopters ferrying water from nearby Mystic Lake, a C130 making large drops and two Grumman S2Trackers in between, with a Beech Super King Air directing the assault.
I have to go that way tomorrow afternoon, but there might be a long detour if they close the road.
Now the big guns arrived. A 737 and a DC10 moving closer for a drop and an OV10 Bronco circling to direct the four helicopters.

Edit 7:30 pm update:
Over 850 acres now in some difficult terrain to access with ground equipment. Two bulldozers, six ground crews, twenty-one engines, 180 personnel, and one water tender. Twenty % containment.
So far the only fire that shows up on the NWS satellite view is the Post Fire NE of Ventura.

Air operation has ceased this morning and the roads look clear so the trip appears to be a go. Fifty percent containment and 7mph winds so they’re sending the aircraft where they are needed elsewhere. If I see anything on the way I’ll post about it later today.

Saw no smoke, just a dozen support vehicles circled by some outhouses and a Skytrain helicopter pulling water from the lake. Looks like it is nearly contained.
Visibility less than five miles in the general area, unhealthful air quality but I have seen worse.

This am a fire near Banning Bench. Four Grumman S2 trackers ferrying water from Ryan Field assisted by a water dropping helicopter with a circling Osprey directing traffic.

Dubbed the Bluff Fire it’s currently at 40 acres but high winds and proximity to the mountain forest they’re aggressively fighting it. Expect larger aircraft if it spreads.

Dodged another bullet. Now they’re working east of Temecula wine country and expensive homes.

Here in Santa Barbara County we have the biggest fire in CA going on right now. Thank God that the wind is blowing it away from my house.

Three fixed wing aircraft and one helicopter swooping on a fire in a roadless area of the Beauty Mountain Wilderness Area east of Temecula. No information yet for the Lafayette Fire.
Maybe a dry lightning strike.
7 PM update:
Three Skytrain helicopters now with an OV10 Bronco circling and calling the shots. Nearby Lake Riverside a short hop away for access to water.

Was 103 degrees when I started mowing the lawn and only 97 when I finally got finished. Glad to be able to post it here instead of in dropping like flies. Took quite a while to do the job as I needed five breaks and downed two liters of water.
