The Schwinn Tailwind is a great ebike but the size of the battery is a little bit of a letdown. I wanted to share a simple modification to the box that holds the motor controller to allow it to accept any 24V battery pack. The cool thing about this mod is that it allow you to continue to use your original battery pack or any other battery pack of any size you want (one could even mount in the battery in the triangle for better balance or in a backpack so it always stays with you).
Just unscrew the controller housing from the rear rack and slide it out. Remove the screws and take it apart. Drill two holes in the bottom to allow your new wires to go through. I used XT-90s connectors in mine - pass the wires through the holes you drilled then crimp on a couple of ring connectors. The two terminal posts are free to spin so you need to grip it with a pair of pliers while you undo the nut at the end. Make sure you have the polarity right and put everything back together again. You have now future proofed your Tailwind (note this mod will also work with any bike that uses the same controller box setup).
