Does anyone have an approach to buying sla 3x36v 12ah batteries. My local electric bike shop is selling a pack already wired for $105 (manufacturer: Weida). How can I know if they are of good quality...or are they all the same? Can they be tested at the shop before I buy them?

Did you mean 3 x 12V ? If so, batterygeek1 on Ebay did 3 12V 12aH $75 shipped to me. 4 x 4 x 6" size. He has a 98%+ rating and the batteries have been great.
Apologies if you really meant 3x36.....

I've never used ebay but I think I'd like to get these from this seller. Is there a way to search by seller. I looked under 12volt 12ah batteries but didn't find any by that seller or at that price.

Check your box for a private message with the battery source email address.
All the best!

Sla's need a break in before you know their true capacity, so a shop test is not real practical, unless it includes about 10 gentle discharge cycles. Then you coud do a one time discharge to closer to 100% to see what they can do. Nobody gonna do that for ya. Best quality, B&B, EV grade, but they will cost more than some lithium out there these days. Nicads from Ebikes.ca are still a good safe bet though, and a few bucks cheaper than a headway pack and charger. If money is that tight, try the bike shop deal, nothing else will be cheaper that doesn't stink. Or the wallmart toy batteries. Those I found at least equal to those that come with a WE kit.

I have used Gruber in the past. Here is a link to 12V 12AH for $25.96 http://www.gruberpower.com/gruberpower/advertising/batteries/cutsheets/UPS-58-GPS-12-12f2.asp When I used them last they had a 1 year warranty on batteries which I used on my first set I got from them several years ago which were putting out less than 4AH after 10 months. They sent a free repacement set that lasted over a year before I bought my last set from them. I have switched to lithium scavenged from laptop battery packs now.

that's a decent deal for Pb. Where do you get your scavenged laptop batteries?
