Smart Glasses, who’s wearing them while cycling and if so do you like them ?

If not, would you consider using them ?

For a while now I’ve been considering using/wearing some type of action camera while riding my bike.

Not to take YouTube content GoPro type sports footage but rather for my own protection against motorists while using the, generally, good cycling infrastructure around my city.

Where the cycle routes meet and cross the road network at intersections and at crossing points the cyclist, generally, has the right of way and this is clearly marked in/on the roads.

In the last year I’ve had 3 incidents of nearly being hit by motorists vehicles and chased down twice by the angry motorists following their poor driving. The most serious of which being where the motorist chased me for quite a while and at one point mounted the curb and blocked the cycle route with his car. I hopped onto the road, passed him and back onto the cycle route before he was able to confront me. Though he did continue his aggressive pursuit until I was able to give him the slip cutting through an industrial zone.

This last weekend I spent some time on YouTube watching long term smart glasses reviews by cyclists, noticed how, much more, reasonably priced the Gen 1 Ray Ban Meta Wayfarer smart glasses had become and how practical they could be for my safety concerns, having built in camera and video function, plus built in speakers which I could also use to listen to Map directions, accept/make calls and receive notifications.

More expensive makes/models even offering heads-up type displays. But for now the Gen 1 Wayfarers appear as though they would fit my current wants and needs plus some more and have an acceptable battery life.

They’re available with prescription lenses, the lenses are easy to switch out and there’s also a lot of aftermarket accessories available.

There are some privacy concerns, though some of these can be mitigated in the app and by not using cloud storage.

I’m in need of some new prescription glasses and am seriously considering buying a pair of these Gen 1 Ray Ban Meta’s

Meta wants to use these to suck up every piece of data about your life and use it to train AI.
No matter how you configure them, they're going to be a privacy risk for you and others.

In fact they are being sued for lying about what data is collected or where it goes with this exact product:
The Meta AI Glasses Lawsuit: What It Signals for Employers Using (or Confronting) Wearable Technology in the Workplace | Bean, Kinney & Korman

I'd use literally any other product for the purposes you're outlining.

Another one of those conceptually great/interesting things held back by big companies doing big company things.

I think I'd prefer the camera(s) on the bike itself and then the glasses could make a cool HUD. The camera part would be the first I would consider out of the two.

It's hard to get the 'perfect' cycling glasses, clears for night and say mild tint for day. Dedicated Cycling glasses are a total scam and are purchased more for impressing friends at the coffee shop I'm sure. I use various slimline safety glasses that have a bit of wrap around to keep the bugs and wind out of my eyes. To expect a pair of meta or whatever glasses to provide the same result is asking a lot.

$10 safety glasses, and scratch resistant too. If you want them hydrophobic just spray a little Mr Sheen on them and buff it in.

Or pay 5x as much for these. Just remember not to shave for 3 days ok. Something about the whiskers breaking up airflow I think?

I see the value of a camera, but would stick to something tiny that mounts to a bicycle, doesn't interface with cloud, and doesn't steal your data to train ai. Probably some good stuff for motorcycle "dash" cams.

While I understand and share your views and concerns regarding data collection and privacy concerns, Meta are not the only ones collecting our data and unless you’re living completely “off grid” we’re all being data harvested every day.

There is also, generally, no expectation of privacy while being in public.

Live facial recognition is getting set to be rolled out here in France, it’s routinely being used in the UK now, even in small towns, and every nation in the world is/will be following suit under the same guise of it being for our safety.

French Police are using facial recognition data bases to identify people, even in the absence of a crime or suspected crime, not following their policies correctly and generally not being punished for doing so.

Police body cams are slowly being updated to head mounted cameras and you can bet your bottom dollar that Law enforcement agencies are or will be implementing live facial recognition on these head mounted cameras.

Home WiFi routers are able to map their surroundings and occupants/people’s movements.

Ring Cameras and home surveillance security cameras are often easily breached and the footage is often easily obtained by Gov agencies.

Robot vacuum cleaners having similar security concerns.

It’s reported that 9 million Meta glasses have been sold in the last 2 years, not to mention other similar smart AI cloud connected glasses.

Google and Apple smart glasses are in the pipeline, the latter would integrate with my other Apple devices very easily but will, most likely, be out of my price range for some time.

My research continues for the ideal solution to my wants and needs, though I don’t believe that a perfect solution will be found.

I’ve considered and researched front and rear mounted camera’s but if I used them I’d be constantly fitting and removing them throughout the day during my usual cycling trips.

A decade ago when the pokemon go craze was sweeping the western world my son came over and started looking around my rooms with his phone. I knew what it was about, a global mapping of living spaces, because there was always to be a poke to be found in a home. I told him to take the phone and put it in his car, it's the only way to get an uninterrupted conversation with him anyway. Mac Donald's must have done a deal with the developers because there were always pokes to be found there too lol. The whole world is a market place now.
