SoCal Grange Race Roll Call!!!! Congrats PaulD!!!

Jay64 made it here super late, and only entered the last race, but his bike seemes to be having some issues and seemed to be taking its time around the track.

Etard and Thud made it at like 6pm after the track was closed to bikes. And had non-running bikes, though Thuds was about 95% done, and I didn't look at etards.

Lol, remember John, all the ebikes were in the first race, including the hubmotor bikes, and my bike and paulDs non-frock bikes crushed everything by a mile. :)

We go into the pits and try to figure it out. The fault says "encoder error". We scope the halls, they a mess. Just jagged ripples rather than a proper square wave... we switch to the second set of halls in the motor. Motor wont turn... we switch back, it kinda runs.
That really sounds like the halls were getting too hot to operate properly, as the motor got hotter over time--your description reminds me of the way my Fusin acted the night I overheated it pulling the heavy trailer too slowly.

But sounds like you still had at least a *little* fun. :)

Luke..Farfles frocked setup how did it go with Farfle on it? and was the girl
his 'girlfriend' Have we video of this lass making the stink bikes look ridiculous? What was the reaction from the stink bikers? And i thought even unlimited was restricted to 11hp WHY was the stink bike allowed if it was 20hp? and it STILL Couldnt last the distance, how ironic hahaa... Speaking of range, were any of the e-bikes troubled by the distance Luke?

KiM

EDiT: OH...and there is more racing tomorrow is there? I forgetz if it was a 2 day thing i thought it was...I gather ThudSTeR and etard will be operational by tomorrow then? Tell them i said hi anywayz :)

LOL. I stand corrected....Double Frocked in the final, but winning the race of the day in heat 1. Wish I was there with you guys.

More racing tomorrow? I really should be on a plane tonight, to give moral support and be someone's pit crew.

Awesome recap Luke. Looking forward to pics and video. Anything can happen on race day. Sounds like a great show for the ebikes.

Nope, no more racing. 1 day event. PaulD is the champion of everything. He rides so smoothand fast and perfect.

NOW yer talkin. !!!!!!!!!

Had me laughing at that Blow-By-Blow and the girl passing.    That's a Classic report, right there.

I too am perplexed at that 20HP stink bike. Looks like some rule bending going on.

Don't worry about that controller stuff any longer. I know about a controller even You, Luke, won't blow up. 8)

Might need a trailer to haul it around, though. Think 400 V at 3000A, going in a drag car.

Y'all keep this action going, and, I might have to buy a seat next to John, and check out this stuff, myself.

E-Bikes FTW.

Waiting for videos, now. 8) 8) 8)

There was the ultimate race, which was every one under 11hp.

Then the was the unlimited race where there could be over 11hp. That was where the 20hp bike was. Motorcycle tyres were also allowed in this race.

Thanks Luke for the wonderful blow by blow post. I have been checking the forum every hour or two waiting to see what happened. Sounds like I missed a great race. Would have loved to see your bike quitting and then racing past everything again and again. I'm sure that added to the excitement/insanity quite a bit. Hope there are plenty of pics and vids for those of us who could not be there. Congrats to you Luke and Paul for the great ride and win as well as to Farfel's nameless girl that did the electrics proud.

AWESOME GUYS! Congrats Paul. Its our show now. This is the shit the world needs to see to wake up!!!! Aweosome!

Sounds like an epic race, sorry to hear about your motor problems Luke. Bummer about Thudster, that was a long way to go and not race. I'm sure everyone is still going to have fun with the party afterwards. Congrats PaulD for taking the prize. Wish I could of been there.

Im done with feeling sorry for luke lol. He knows as well as the rest of us if he could have just backed off the power a smidgen it would have not over heated the halls!
He did an awesome job and better then I could afford to and Im not saying anything negative about LUKE he is my hero! But man so frustrating! lol Awesome can't wait for the video!

Now that the stinkies have been truly handed their asses maybe they won't let the ebikes play any more.
. . .or they'll go gas free themselves for next year.
Luke's repeated stopping and starting, only to pass them and die so he could pass 'em again, must have aggravated a few riders.

The stink bikes got a taste of electric today. My Bike CRUSHED the next fastestgas bike, which got 46mph, while PaulDs bike got 49mph, and mine did 67mph, letting off midway down the straight.
Even the 2stroke racing mopeds and things they brought for the special unlimited classes all got completely slaughtered by my bikes speeds and laptimes. It was seriously an eye opener for them to see an electric blow passed them at like 30mph faster by a bike with smoke comming off the fishtailing tire.

No ebikes had any issues running out of battery that I was aware of.

I destroyed the hookworm in the first practice. The we swapped to a fresh tire, it lasted 1 race and was shredded. Ended up with both tires popped and shredded and riding on the rim with the tore flipping around just for fun. Somebody got the burnout popping on video. Much fun and laughter. Lol

I almost forgot!! SoSaughty had an epic lipo fire!! 8 x 6s packs all exploding at once! One of the photographers got some awesome pics of it engulfing a huge ball of fire in the pits next to his car. Seriously epic fireball.

Just back in from the track & a nice chat with fatfle's crew, evoforce, etard, Jay64 & a few others. actually had a good time even given the results of my own efforts. Etards bike was repaired & he took it out on the track for a few laps as the sun set. I also rode Farfles set up....I have to say I was quite shocked at the acceleration, By far the best hub-racer to date. After my spin I insisted Jay64 try it....he whent out to chase e-tard but hit low battery befor any dicing ensued.
As we left the track all the families that were camping for tomorrows event were bbq ing & all set up in a circle for the story telling & great comunion that it the racing scene. Nice to know its the same everywhere. if you ever get a chance to come & participate in an event like this, you will be glad you did.
Congrats again paulD
condolances to sosauty, his weekend was much worse than my week....like the bad day to measure e-bike bad days.....long story short, Sosauty's toy racer is heading to FL with Jay64 I'll let some one else describe his fire....& burned astro. Sorry to see that Sosauty I hope your next build is the bike of your desires.

For me that's one of the big benefits of high powered ebikes....We open eyes as a big contribution to the cause that mainstream ebikes can never do.

WOW!!! Almost a total Podium Sweep!!

Let those gassers chew on this one for a while!

Too bad your controller/halls failed on ya Luke, maybe you need a pit crew chief to stop you from turning the power up to 11!!

Gratz to PaulD, the Mystery Girl and all else who raced, prepped, and supported the ES effort! 8)

Sorry to hear about Sosauty's epic fire!!

That's one expensive LiPo disaster!

The beautiful young mystery girl is named Aidan. Really an amazingly gifted natural racer. We are going to make her a custom cro-mo frame to fit her properly, and perhaps one of Hal's amazing new hubs, or perhaps a non-hub setup like a perm132 or a golden BLDC, and maybe some nano-techs.

I think Will learned this time that Astros simply are not suited to racing. Nobody has ever had any success with Astros in a non-burst-only application.

Lessons learned for our team:

Smoked 2 hubs setting up a bike for this race. Smoked the hub on the second lap of the race. Racing with hubs requires not sending more than ~5kw to the hub if you want to last more than a couple laps.

Having epic power is awesome.

DO NOT run bicycle tires for road racing! The bike tires can't even finish a single race on a hot bike and flats are just a fact of life with them. It was really lucky nobody was hurt on any of the 3 tire failures we had today.

Nano-tech packs make an amazing race battery. We ran them very hard, they never missed a beat, never got warm, never sagged, accepted slamming a fast charge in them effortlessly, and gave me no range issues at all.

Motor outside temps never exceeded 155degF. That's cold for a motor. Not 100% sure what killed the sensors, but maybe internal temps were 100degf hotter inside the case somehow.

We will use externally mounted sine/cosine encoders from now on.

ha!, lfp frocked by a frock wearing frock jockey!
that's frock cubed man!!!

lfp=luke frock-pwned. :mrgreen:

Lol :)

Yes, she beat me, but in the race while my bike was healthy still, PaulD and I both had a huge margin on her when I won over Paul by 10ft or so.
The. In the final, Paul won by at least half lap over her 2nd place position.

PaulD had very little power. Riding his bike shocked me with how not powerful it was. I was expecting about 7hp, but it's more like 3hp and the reason it's fast is 99% due to Paul's insanely good skills at riding. This guy is the smoothest fastest cornering road racer on a bicycle that I ever even imagined was possible.

HAHA well, Maybe this will teach Luke a valuable lesson, if he backs off the power a little he will actually finish in front  ...

KiM

reminds me of ayrton senna, perhaps lfp is too young to have learned this lesson from history.
3 lap lead on the rest of the pack & the arrogant bastard still lays down fastest lap after fastest lap all the while ignoring team orders on the radio to slo down until he blows his engine.
both of them done in by their own ego.

i think the real eye opener here is for those who seriously believe a hubbie isn't worthy of holding a geared motors jock-strap.

erm...the frock beat LFP³ granted but it was to be expected Luke would run his bike into the ground and not finish at all LoL... wasn't the frock bike half a lap behind the winning non-frock still, doesn't exactly make it competitive now does it  Perhaps we can let the frock hold the jock strap thats used to wipe excessive chain lube off a non frock setup :p
