Some states are more sane about this stuff ... OR and WA simply exempt electric pedal assist bikes under 751 Watts and 20 MPH on a flat ( 18 MPH for WA ), and consider them bicycles.

Montana's law looks about right for Montana ... heh.

As for most efficient and green vehicle ... I think my Diesel Suburban would win, provided I powered it with Soylent Biodiesel. Every 8 gallons removes one human carbon footprint!

Oregon actually has the limit for an electric assisted bicycle at 1000 Watts. It doesn't seem to be a big deal, since there not only isn't a simple field test, many hub motors aren't labled, and there seems to be a question about whether it is maximum Wattage or maximum continuous Wattage, or?

Illinois is 1,500 watts (2 brake horsepower) and 30mph. That is the most liberal laws I have seen.

However, I was still counselled to make the bike stealth to not draw too much attention.

Interesting ... I thought it was 1 horse power. I don't think there are any 1000W hubs out there?

Whaddya mean? I put 1,500+ into a 4011 daily.

Has the paint cooked off of it yet?

in florida the legal definition of a bicycle is not more than three wheels and not more than 200 watts if so equipped with motor assist and it must have pedals that do work oh and as far as mopeds are concerned? the seat measurement really makes my day no more than 25 inches from the ground when adjusted at it's highest for mopeds. now i ask ya and here i go again, i am over 6 feet tall my tires are 26 inches and my seat is higher than they are so there ya have it. not a moped and not a bicycle............................. I called and talked to i can't remember how many people at the tax collectors office where i would go to register my "vehicle" and anyone i talked to there told me to hold for someone else and finally i talked to one lady who flat out told me the state would not issue a registration and after talking to law enforcement agencies on the phone for a another few hours i was told that i really don't have anything to worry about .....................................ok now what?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OZ, I think if you read the Florida law carefully, it excludes those bikes with the seat 25 inches from the ground or less. I also have never seen the 200 Watt limitation, but there is a 20 MPH max speed on level ground limitation. Search this forum for posts from Matt Gruber and his run in with florida laws.

I'm so glad the cops in my town ignore e bikes so far. But I still peadal like hell when I see one.

Not yet, but I'll keep you posted. Going to up to about 30A soon for a wee bit more hill climbing power so that would be 2,000+ at peak. I wouldn't want to do that continuously, but have read it's no problem in bursts.
