The age of cheap Chinese stuff is ending in the USA?

Thanks for clarifying that, okay, that's bad

I wonder how many US companies supplying EV parts have front loaded in preparation?

Also, from what I read China's counter tarrifs only cover about 20 billion, vs the US's over 200 billion. But it's still restrictions on materials needed for the energy transition ( like for making solar panels ). I still need to buy a new battery pack 'soon'(ish), I feel I'm shooting myself in the foot by procastrinating.

It's an additional 10% tariff on imports from China. So, a lot of the imported stuff was at a 25% tariff rate
last week, and is now at 35%.
Can you cite that, please? Because I think it's incorrect.

Biden administration set several tariffs on EVs, EV batteries, and solar cells in Sept 2024.

Trump threatened 25% tariffs across the board, then ended up just doing 10%.

I found this source helpful as on overview about the tariffs from Trump's first term, which the Biden administration upheld and even increased for some Chinese goods (skip down to about 50% of the way for a summary of major tariffs from 2018 onward).

I found it hilarious that washing machines were singled out. Don't know why, but that was funny to me.

If you really want to know, tarrifs are available on USITC website. But it's terrible for 'readability', you need to know the hts code identifier to look anything up. Like, EV motors are category 8501.61.00, were subject to a 2.5% tarrif before 2024, when they got hit with a 100% tarrif under Biden.

According to Bing 8501.61.00 was not included in the Trump tarrif measures.

big washing machine got a powerful lobby i guess!

This is how I understand what the China tariffs were before Trump's ad hoc 10% tariff supplement. Don't know if that10% is on top of the scheduled increases in 2025:

In 2024, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) increased tariffs on certain Chinese imports under Section 301. The new tariffs went into effect on September 27, 2024, and additional increases are scheduled for 2025 and 2026.

What was increased?

  • Electric vehicles: Tariffs increased to 100%
  • Battery parts: Tariffs increased to 25%
  • Lithium-ion electrical vehicle batteries: Tariffs increased to 25%
  • Other critical minerals: Tariffs increased to 25%
    • Ship-to-shore cranes: Tariffs increased to 25%
    • Solar cells: Tariffs increased to 50%
    • Steel and aluminum products: Tariffs increased to 25%
When did the increases take effect?

    • September 27, 2024: Tariffs on some products went into effect on this date
    • January 1, 2025 or 2026: Tariffs on other products will go into effect on these dates
What was the process?

The U.S. Postal Service's suspension of packages from China is sure going to cripple our hobby with a BFH.
Leaf Motor is South Korean, is it not. That should still be good to ship to the US?

I just read that and was like wtf..
USPS temporarily suspends accepting packages from China and Hong Kong

Mr. Trump's tariff increase also eliminated a duty-free exemption for low-value packages coming from China. The "de minimis" exemption allows goods valued at $800 or below to come into the United States without paying duties or certain taxes.

Shein and Temu on suicide watch!

Mr. Trump says he plans to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming days.

..does he think he's going to twist Xi's arm? Good luck with that sheet..

News story tomorrow will be "Japan strikes deal with China: new city to be built on Hokkaido named "Haisō Sentā Toshi" to reprocess billions of parcels to USA".

You're forgetting Ali... There is a reason all adds state 'max. order size is 800 or below, but you can place as many orders concurrently as you like' 😂

Historically speaking, it's more likely The Dutch would be able to get an excemption to trade exclusively while the rest of the 'decadent west' is not allowed to even be in contact with individual companies. Something like the Dejima trade agreement.

..does he think he's going to twist Xi's arm?

He's not going to tell anyone what he's doing - just as with his private (and perhaps illegal, but certainly improper) meetings with Putin.

All you'll hear is what he wants to manipulate you with. He does not represent you - he only represents him.

EV enthusiasts in the USA have 30 days to buy Canadian!

It's hard not to comment on the politics behind this topic, in a way which isn't just taking the piss out of it ( without enticing people with other opinions to feel emotionally attacked because not everyone agrees with their brain washed notion of truth ).

But hey, it seems the US has succesfully exported it's most cherished product, finally, to Sweden.

I'm sure they will love having school shootings just as much as Murican's do.

.. taking the piss it is.

The Postal Service said Tuesday it would stop mail and packages coming from China and Hong Kong, but less than 24 hours later said it would continue to accept such shipments.

“The USPS and Customs and Border Protection are working closely together to implement an efficient collection mechanism for the new China tariffs to ensure the least disruption to package delivery,” a Postal Service spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday.

Well off course Orange Guy wants your packages to be delivered instead of returned, how else is he going to get you guys to pay his working class taxes erhmmm 'trade tarrifs'?

What is the point of taxing you people if you're not allowed to pay 😂

This sounds like a general statement about how politics work 😅

I get what you're saying and totally understand why orange guy gets people mad.

My take is.. i didn't elect the guy and i'm not responsible for his actions. I'm concerned about what he does, and affected by what he does, but i don't let him live rent free in my head, because it's out of my control. I prioritize my emotional/logical energy towards what i affect. i do my best to not waste it on what i can't.

So for me these threads are more about 'what are we going to do about this situation' than being mad.
I'm not saying this way of thinking is better than anyone else's, just explaining my POV.

From a moderation perspective, we need to balance between letting people offgas how they feel versus making those emotions into a club and beating anyone who resembles the thing they don't like. That's where the line has to be drawn and it's a tough line to maintain!

I don't like having to maintain it, but we found we don't like the results of not maintaining it!

Ow I seen places where this isn't done, and it's not pretty. Eventually the only people left posting are the one's with the most to say, but the least able to converse with.

Some people are affected more then others. Even if some just have more friends who're invested in Gaza ( through other friends or relatives or whatever ) for instance. I'm lucky our 'Yellow Hair Guy' wasn't allowed to become PM, with his 'let's move all of them to other countries, good call there is no Palestine' tweets because now I don't have to worry about my goverment siding with Orange Guy, they immediatly let out a statement they support a two state solution which includes Gaza being part of Palestine... for Palestinians... not for Orange Guy and his resorts.

I was also getting happier throughout the day, with more and more countries coming out and just plain out saying it would be ethnic cleansing to use the US sponsored bombing campaign as excuse to forcefully relocatte Palestinians from their own land.

For me the only rule I try to adhere to with this stuff: if I need to do something 'IRL', all the other stuff should become irrelevant. Bit like you I guess. But I have more free time ;) And now I'm worried if 70% of this reaction is to political in nature ;)

Btw that image doesn't work on me, I would immediatly point out that 'my spending' is 100% affected by 'smart foreign policy' and that for the friends I choose, it matters a lot what he or she has to say! 😂

The problem with all this is the constant chaos disguises the root problem, which is the breakdown of the rule of law. The institutions of govt are sometimes messy and frustrating and may not always yield the result that "you" want. But when you get someone who just tosses all that aside and creates a situation where one person can make decisions and polices at his whim and based on his personal biases, things will not end well. This is banana republic stuff. And folks that support this breakdown need to consider that some idiot of the other flavor may come to power one day and do the same. Hence our institutions were designed to reach some sort of consensus, as imperfect at that often seems. We abandon that at our peril.

I'm not American, so I can't speak in this 'our' or 'we' manner. But I do agree that for an outsider, what is happening now just looks like an ineffcient game off ping-pong where the next Democratic president will spend his first weeks equally bussy giving executive orders undoing everything they can from this adminstration.

And don't get me started on protecting employees from vindictive governments, you can't just 'replace' all your civil cervants because you're afraid they aren't ideaoligically attuned to your new adminstration.

Liz starts out explaining 'checks and balances', while this is primarily focucces on the 'land acquisition' it's still applicable.
