I've been interested in e-bikes off and on for years, off and on because just a few years ago battery tech was mostly lead acid and there still wasn't a lot of info for better (lighter)chemistries around yet. Enter Endless Sphere and an explosion of knowledge, eagerly shared by everyone. The point is,it took me a LONG time to finally realize my e-bike and I must say I really Love this thing. It's a simple machine ,I bought the 200.00 geared motor kit from e-bike kit advertised a while ago (Outstanding kit),got some Makita packs (for Konions)from Dr Bass (great guy excellent cells),From which I built my own pack - 48v-15ah 10p 14s - 58 hot off charger-charged with a meanwell ,this pack turned out really great. I think the best decision I made was to spend some money and get a decent bike,it's a Raleigh mountain/comfort hybrid with a front suspension, this is what makes the ride a pleasure. This baby sticks to the road and corners like a dream,it's responsive comfortable and stops on a dime even at 30-35mph. The top speed on the flat is 22mph and at that speed i feel like i'm flying. There's only one thing that feels better than silently speeding down the an empty road on a warm summer night. My bike takes most hills with ease and even on the steepest a few well placed pedals will take you right up.Rarely any heat motor or controller,iv'e gone 24 miles on a charge and the pack has never been below 55volts. I went for stealth with my build and i'm proud to say that nobody ever guesses that my bike is an ev.,and they are always surprised when i tell them, they ask where the motor is and then "can you charge while riding?" There's also the added bonus of "Stickin it to the Man",my daughter told me that her and her sisters recently came to the conclusion that ,Dad hates the man ha ha. For the first time yesterday I rode my bike to my job 9 miles away and i don't think I ever enjoyed my commute so much,I made it in 26 minutes vs 35-40 mins in a car not to mention gas savings. All of these thing gives me great pleasure especially when i don't have to drag that extra 2000 pounds around.

I always wanted to start a TV show, similar to "Manswers" called "Stickin it to the Man". Each week, show the many, many ways you can stick it to the man.

Right on!

Sounds like e-bike nirvana. :)

:Thumbs-up:

Hey Thanks for that thumbs up means a lot ya know why? Because i live with 4 females just me and my wife and three daughters, and they don't care 1 iota about my bike i practically had to force my three daughters 17 20 26 to try my bike ,when they did they all got the ev grin but none of them are bugging for another ride, and the missus won't try it at all  she has below zero interest meaning she tells me to shut up if i talk ANY tech to her. Are there any women on this forum? lets hear from you!....crickets

lol, oh man.... Yeah I'm not surprised. You can't talk tech to females, no matter what it's about. If anything, tell them how you felt, how the wind fluttered your hair and the cool smell of the morning dew, describe your emotions. The second you speak #s to females, it's like _____________

I'm 25 and when I mention my ebike to any of my friends.... they just say "oh cool" to be nice. No appreciation for the great value of a quality ebike.

That's awesome. To cut that much time off a car commute - it completely makes the ebike the best choice IMO.

I was just thinking during my 20k commute by ebike

HOW SWEET IT IS

It s really one of the best feelings to be transported with electricity , out in the open air, flying with the birds almost. and so silent.

Cheers, All

Yeah, everybody I know thinks I'm quite a kook, prefering the bike to the car. Especially in summer when it's 105F. But I feel better after a 1 hour ride home on the bike than if I ride home in a car for 20 min, and 10 min of it, that car is 130F.

The best part of my commute route goes past the Sams Club gas pumps where people are getting all pissed off trying to get some gas a few pennies cheaper. I whizz by going " see ya, wouldn't want to be ya."

The wife is pretty used to me being a kook though. She enjoys going to work and telling the folks, " you'll never believe what he's up to now". But she sees the motor as cheating. I see it as taking advantage of technology. Is fuel injection in the car cheating vs a carb?

You must have a really crap commute, if the bike is that much faster. Keep on riding the bike.

A lot of people can only see a bike in one way - as a fitness tool. They can't see it as a transportation alternative. So when there is a motor on it, they call it cheating.

Pretty lame thought process if you ask me.

Had the same experience when switching from car to bike and then to e-bike!

I leave in a pretty un-welcomed bicycle city. Nevertheless, with the help of my e-bike, At rush hours I reach every destination within the reach of the battery faster then a car.

It is just an amazing invention. A vehicle that augment your muscle power :D

And some of the lycra shiny pants (as Aussie Jester would call them) have spent more on their ultralight bicycle than all of my bikes and motors combined!
Being of the farmer mentality I only like useful things and my ebike is very useful it gets me to and from work everyday with a smile on my face.

At my age and physical prowess (not!) I would never be able to get enough time on a bike to keep in shape. I would poop out long before the aerobic benefits showed up. Ebikes allow us to travel farther and faster so we can concentrate on the joy of the ride without the need of a 911 call. To me that is everything I love about E-power.

If "cheating" is so wrong I don't wanna be right...

Recently, a lycra boi sneered at me and said something to the effect - "you're not getting any workout..." I laughed and replied - "I'm going to work, not the gym..."

I gather many in our "club" never used street 2-wheelers (motorcycles) much until electricity came along? So, those folks are really in for a treat as they get to know double the fun of 2-wheeling coupled with clean, green, quiet propulsion. Match made in heaven IMO.

Of course, car/truck operators are very stupid, selfish and dangerous so you gotta get training about what to do in traffic. It's no joke and these things are not toys!

50-100 miles I regularly log are some of the best minutes/hours of my week!

What little problems I get on my ebike commute come from drivers and Lance Armstrong wannabes. Oddly enough, the closest I've ever got to an accident came from a kid on an expensive street bike. Thank God he wasn't on a fixed gear!
I travel around inside a large public university, so start and stop traffic is the name of the game, but I just whizz by in the bicycle lane. But then have to stop suddenly for a young art major on her pink cruiser, chatting on her iphone. blegh :p

I don't want this topic to turn into bashing other commuters, though. I love the fact that I can travel quickly without wasting gas and not breaking a sweat.

I passed a good looking lycra wearer the other day and she said "Hi!" she logs about 5,000 miles a year on her pedal bike (needless to say she's in great shape) My normal cyclist friend helps me maintain my bikes all the time. The only time I have problems is the big city I drive to about 13 miles away and the traffic is unnerving in a few parts of town, but I try to find alternate routes to avoid the crazy drivers. The ones I hate the most are the ones who honk at you as if to say "F you get off the road" that's when I wish I had a 100v booster battery and a hand grenade! So I can wait for them to stop at a traffic light zoom by and drop it on their windshield and zip by.

I really think that when someone puts out a stealth, reasonably priced, totally plug and play ebike with some balls :!: - Game over these things are gonna catch on like wildfire. I was looking at the izips and they seem to have all of that ,they are some good looking sleek machines but cmon 24 v 10ah  double that and then we're talkin, then you got a decent hill climber that will go 20 miles at 20mph with no effort and a great deal farther and faster with more help. I'm guessing legal issues, putting that much power in the hands of the average joe ...crazy. No its much safer to pump 30 gallons of highly flammable potentially explosive liquid into your vehicle; Something interesting I recently found out - when you're pumping gas you are not supposed th take your hand off of the pump because when you grab it again you may have picked up static  anyway i'm talking about a bicycle that has a motor not a motor bike. My point is when im about to let someone ride my bike they always approach as if it's going to take off on them and they ask "can I peddle?",and i say yes it's a bicycle first, start peddling and when your ready pull back gently on the throttle and then they always show off those pearly whites :D

Well we are a melting pot of people here who have developed an interest in e-vehicles. All of us are converts. Most of us still use other forms of transport as well. If I could afford to turn everything I have into electric today, poof it would be done. I am sure we all wish for cheaper and lighter electricity storage. Many things about e-vehicles inspire me including the fun aspects like engineering and learning new things. Using the vehicles is a blast. Talking with inquiring minds is cool. Also hanging with like minded people is great. In fact a fellow ES member and I were chilling a couple nights ago. He is now building a e-recumbent trike. Thought before about doing one myself. I don't know if my neck can handle it though. It is still stiff today from riding his trike although it will have a neck support in the future, and batteries YESsss! Well could type a book but it's dinnertime. Later... :D

Riding your electric bike. No gas. Theres nothing like it.

All so true, and I haven't seen another forum that comes close to Endless Sphere for sheer volume, detail and diversity of topics, and thats just whats been written. Hell I knew nothing about electronics or batteries, but from just reading and digging through these posts ,without asking one question - learned inside and out about lithium batteries: balancing - internal resistance - series and parallel - .... Easily enough to have the confidence to build my own pack. I don't think there's a school out there that could teach you that stuff! And then there's the Brains.guys who worship electrons  but not the dollar, these guys are generous with their time and knowledge.Fetcher is always there with a good solution, heck I don,t know how many times Iv'e read Gary patiently explaining to a noobie about the need for cell level lvc and what happens if a cell goes cliffdiving . Speaking of Gary and Fetcher the stuff they are developing the Bms.,charge controller exc, I think is the cherry on top of ES nobody is working at this level and i'm watching and waiting with everybody else.
