Looks like a nice little stainless box.

There are only two times a battery can fail, during charge or discharge, and while you can not control what happens in your model you can control what happens during charging with the Turnigy Lipo Bunker.
Constructed from S304 certified stainless steel to withstand temperatures in excess of 800 degrees Celsius, the Turnigy lipo Bunker is a bullet proof safety enclosure designed to contain flames and help minimize damage to surrounding objects in the event of a lipoly failure. The duct will ensure heat, flames and gases being expelled from a lipoly battery will be vented in a direct and controlled manner.
Specs.
Case Material: S304 Certified Stanliess Steel
Dimensions: 180mm x 90mm x 90mm

Interesting. Looks a lot like what I use to store my lipo. A military ammo box, with vents to controll the direction of any heat or flames.

I can find ammo boxes easy at the flea, but this is in the gun happy USA.

thats US$24+Shipping and we all know HK looove to charge for shipping
A old cash box with a hole in it for the leads does me fine.

Hmmm those dimensions must be external. Bit impractical for an ebike pack.

They make money on your fear

I think they make money on laziness (rather buy than build) . I think people lose money on laziness too (rather burn than build).

Interesting idea - it got me thinking about using a low-end fire-safe cash box...

FWIW: Here's a $40 SentrySafe 1170BLK unit with free shipping from Amazon - cheaper than two of the SS boxes... At 32lbs it's got a little attitude. It seems to have a poor lock - but that doesn't seem important.

It's designed to keep fire out (not in), but compared to simple sheet metal, it's probably less likely to set neighboring stuff afire right away...

Good idea, but a box should be vented to avoid an explosion.

Im looking at building aluminum boxes for full time use charge/discharge/storage etc. looks like price for a box for holding 18 5ah 4s hard case packs incl detachable lid would be about 70$ pluss shiping pm me if interested

Just a fairly sturdy metal box will work fine. Doesn't have to be a fire safe, besides you gotta vent it. Could be a cashbox, an ammo box, file box, whatever. Anything that will contain the flames, and then have your vents in the box point a good direction to shoot fire.

True enough, that HK box is much smaller than I thought. I store 8 lipo bricks in each of my ammo boxes with tons of room to spare.

Heres a pic of that box, vented at the back and stored so the vents point at my fireplace.Lipo bunker, ammo box.jpg

This box I tend to use for the lipo I'm using the most at the moment. No vents, just a leaky lid. Roomy enough to set the lipo inside and run the leads out to the nearby chargers. But honestly, I tend to just set them on the hearth to charge rather than contain them.Lipo bunker, first aid.jpg

I have a fridge in the yard too, that I use when its winter and I'm using the fireplace.

your wife let's you keep your lipo in the living room (assuming that's where the fire place is). Your wife is awesome Dogman!
Does she also let you keep the toilet seat up?

Electric drill... same as venting a plain metal box - may need a masonary bit for the wall filler.

Just have to make sure the filler isn't a liquid or sand that will spill out.

If using an ammocan, you can vent it and still get some rain-resistance, depending on it's design. I used a 7.62 type can here:
http://www.endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=535912#p535912
file.php

and notched it under it's lid edges:
file.php

and then bent out it's lid edges so that wires coudl be passed out of them without squishing them, and mostly filling the holes but still wtih enough space to vent gases should something go awry, yet still contain flames inside the can, without exploding.

Alternately you could use a still-sealed can and drill holes somewhere, then tape over the holes with weak tape so pressure inside would rupture the tape long before it could rupture the container.

Thanks for sharing that. Going to the swap meet this weekend :D

You think 2 or 3 of these cans to fit 14 X 6S packs?

I easily fit four 6s in there, plus two 2s, including some thickish foam padding. Other physical arrangements might yield better packing, or if no padding was used, and fit more packs in.

So you'd need 4 of them for 14 packs if you pack them like I did.

The 50cal cans can hold significantly more volume; haven't yet checked tos ee how many, but I can check if you like.

teklektik and others;

I have that safe, got it at Home Depot for around $50...well, it's not vented, I hope I'll be around to tell you guys how well it contains a fire.
I also got a 6 gallon metal garbage can, that I will also be using, it's thin metal, I am thinking of leaving it in the back yard. It's got a tight lid, but I can ventilate it.
I have another similar posting of this, sorry, I did it before I read this one. Jerry

Cool. That kind of looks like a rendering, though.
