I have tried and tried with multiple drivers, multiple windows devices and I cannot get past the "Communication abnormal, no response" error. I am positive it is due to the USB to Serial adapter they sent me not installing properly and being able to start.

Has anyone found a USB to Serial adapter from amazon or wherever that does work and how to properly wire it.
I purchased a DTECH item from Amazon, but have not found the wire combination that works. Wire options are:
T/R +
T/R -
RXD+
RXD-
GND

I have tried a few combinations and cannot get it to work.

Sorry to hear that.

I’ve been well served by the stock Votol dongle, so never needed to explore other options and can’t help you with that.

However, have to ask … is the controller powered on? It needs to be. And you’ll get a fair indication that it is by measuring idle power consumption (around 15mA).

I believe the controller is on, there is a red indicator light that blinks every so often, idk how long apart the blinks are as I have not timed it. I have main battery power to it, and the elock wire (grey/purple) is measuring ~80volts when battery is fully charged. My battery is a 72v 40ah pack that is very new.

Ok. You’re in a spot of bother if the information you seek isn’t contained in the big long Votol thread here, because that’s the repository for resolutions to connection issues.

If you could swap dongles with someone you’d narrow it down. Since you think yours is non-functional anyway, you might as well post it to someone to verify. If it works, they post it back and you continue the problem solving in the knowledge that the issue lies elsewhere.

Seems you got USB to RS232 DB9 adapter, you need USB to TTL types.

Only three signals required from the adapter Rx, Tx & GND

does anybody know if im able to power on my display / controller without having them connected? my usb to ttl has 3 wires to the 5 pin bafang wp cord, and from the usb to display its connected: transmit(usb)->receive(display), receive(usb)->transmit(display), ground(usb)->power(display)

the power lock and ground are connected together and not connected to the usb end.

i realized they are connected recieve to transmit so they can talk to each other but why is the usb ground connected to the display positive? i know i am supposed to have the controller, display, usb, and battery all hooked up but i dont have the cord for that yet and im wondering if i can just switch the positive to the usb and the ground, so then it will be power from controller to the power lock from controller which should let it turn on, and the ground from controller to the ground on the usb which i dont think will do anything bad (but thats why im asking) because the usb has power from my pc hooked up already it doesnt need the controller power to ground does it?
