vanstrom mid drive with 72 volt display

Hello everyone.
i just put together the vanstrom 72 volt mid drive bicycle on a vevor 29 in bicycle. i have added a kitchen sink to it. on the kitchen sink i added new electric bicycle brakes instead of using the kits magnet connect brakes. its currently geared for 42t front chain ring and 11-32 7 speed on the rear cassette.

i ordered the 100mm bottom bracket motor so on the vevor 29in bicycle bottom bracket i had to order some extra spacers but it fits tight and snug. i did this because i want to upgrade to a wider tire later for now for costs i am keeping the current bicycle with minor upgrades.

the current upgrades to it are a drop bar kitchen sink handle bar which allows me to put my cell phone the motor display and a flashlight mount kind of like a spot light on the front while having the space for gear shifters and brakes. i placed the gear shifters on the very inside of the top bars close to the sink and the breaks in a nominal normal spot for drop bars. i will let you know if anyone likes the handle bar on how the breaks fit and gear shifters fit. the gear shifters i had to bend a bit to adjust for the larger diamater of the handle bars; this caused the screw to be slightly off, with a screw gun i was still able to fasten them tightly it required a bit of plier work to bend them a bit. for the brakes i had to snap the closure; this allowed me the broken piece as a clamp and secure the brakes tightly. then i wrapped the handle bars with some florecent yellow tape as being seen is being safe.

the next upgrade that i have is an added chaing ring so that i have a high and low gear and i adjusted the original 42t motor chain with a 52t and 30t chain ring so that i will have 14 gears to be utilized by the motor which using a bicycle speed calculator gives a theoretical average with the 29 in 2.6in wheels a max of 30mph in low gear and 50mph in high gear which i think is pretty reasonable on the solid steel framed bicycle. i was able to do this with some chain ring spacers an adjustable shifter and the extra chain rings i bough them all on amazon ill post the list of everything i used later im still working on the computer side of the elecctric bicycle.

some other upgrades im going to be throwing on the bicycle are suspension saddle post, saddle, handlebar stem, 11 speed rear cassette.

upgrades i need help with are the motor controller display, im looking for a really advanced display firmware with a nice varaiety of settings and that will allow me to program it real good. along with a computer motor contoller flashing software that will allow me to adjust the pedal assist current levels and speeds along with change the allowe voltage of the motor to allow it to accept up to 86 volts.

its currently running on a frame mounted 48 volt 12 amp battery, i have a 72 volt battery but i over charged the battery with a 84.5 volt x 14 amp charger. so i need to get into the motors firmware and change it to allow the 86 volt limit but i cant find the right software. im currently using the canable vanstrom motor with the house shape display connector so i know there is a software out there that allows me to flash the motors voltage.

also i will be building a solar cargo trailer and i want some advice on how to set it up. i will be using a 20 volt 10 amp panel and running it to a mppt controller with a light out a battery out and the solar panel in. im going to run the mppt's light output to the motor; so that when the motor is running it will pull power from the solar panel this will run from the mppt to a dc to dc rectifier that allows 24,36,48,72 volt selection to the motor, i will set the selector to 24 volts and connect via xt60 connectors to a dual battery rectifier with a 80vdc limit so that i can also connect the 48 volt and the solar panel to the motor for a combined 24+48 = 72 volts which the vanstrom motor or bafang what you will with its display allows for a max voltage unless you flash the firm ware. then i will connect the battery output to the battery charger port changing the standard 3 pin connector for a xt60 connector im not quite sure how to do that yet but i want to change it so that i can have the mppt set up so when using the motor it uses the light output to sent power to the motor and uses the battery output to charge the battery. set up this way it will charge until the panels power output is exceeded. so i will set up some power levels the bicycle so that level 0 is your pedal mode and will allow you to ride and charge your battery with a 11 speed on the back and the 2x chain ring on the fron its pretty easy to pedal 12+mph at a leasurliey cadance and gives the low gears i will need for climbing hills with a heavy trailer i want to keep the trailer under 20 pounds so that the bicycle and cargo trailer together dont exceed around 75 pounds. the solar panel wieghs about 5 pounds so that leaves 15 pounds for sizing and hitching with wheels being the main consideration. i also want to wire it up for directionals and break lights but thats the solar trailer power thought for a sun run.

the solar trailer would allow for a constant 48 volt by about 5 amp power supply from the trailer to the bicycle. which would allow a much longer range for electric bicycles with a smaller profile the panel im looking at is 57 inches long by 30 inches wide and im planning on just setting it up as a box using aluminium extrusion t channel bars and corigated plastic or possible abs plastic for the sides. i want to incorporate wiring from this via a axel hitch i have my rear cargo rack set up for passanger travel because i wanna go pick up hoes in europe so my panniers are set up so that my passanger can put on my top bag as a backpack and sit down over the other bags with pegs. so ill run quick connects or releases along the axel hitch connector. i have my 48 volt battery in my frame bag to keep it from sun and water with a hole in it for the motor connectors so adding new wires from the trailer is easy. the pannel will just hinge open and have a latching system so that i have the mppt on the wall of the cargo trailer and the dc to dc converty as well then its just two wires to the battery and one to the motor and boom solar cargo trailer.


but i need to know a couple things, if i split my break sensor connector to add the connection to the trailer will it work if i just split the one line from the motor not sure how to do the break line and i also have a 72 volt volt battery which i wanted to put into series with the 48 volt battery so that it would go from the mppt to the 72 volt battery which will go to the 48 volt battery then to the motor. would doing that work would it just use the 72 volt battery to charge the 48 volt battery? i want to keep the 72 volt battery on the trailer so that i can put some usb outlets and an inverter on it so that it would go mppt 72 volt battery to a inverter and to the 48 volt battery.

any way any ideas or helps appreciated
 
UPDATE ill post a picture of it tomorrow i had to take the cassette offf to see what type of wheel hub i had. im working on upgrading the wheel set and still need to measure the hub. i found a nice snow tire but its on a tubless set up and im scared of tubless setups because i abuse rims. i need a 11 speed wheel hub with a hg cassette connect so im looking around also i ordered a nice expence tracker so i can post a nice overall expense for the bicycle when im done with parts and a quick guide but for now im just logging the progress hope yall enjoy.

the trailer math is done with a 20 volt 10 amp panel at 57in long and 30 inch wide im going to attach it to the top of a vevor cargo trailer lead it to a dc to dc boost converter which allows selection from 24/36/48/72 volts. quick math lets us approximate to aproximate the amps per level which is 8.3/5.5/4.16/2.77 so my thoery on setting up the pedal assists is that 0 is just pedalling allowing the battery to charge then during the day when riding in full sun set it to 48 volts and get 4 volts so the ffirst 1-3 power pedal assist levels for the trailer should be under 150 watts to allow hill assist but also let the system charge. then what ever for the next steps the motor i have is only limited by rotation so it will let me throw voltage and current through it and i plan to abuse it until i need to open it up and replace the nylon threads.

so the 48 volt battery 12 amp hour battery i have on the bike will charge in about 3 hours which would allow me to travel for 4-5 hours under sun power depending on your daylight times and pedal to charge the bicycle before dark and pedal a lot through out the night allowing someone to cover a ton of ground like 200 miles in a full day of biking or more.

i found mdis new updated bafang software and got it running so after i adjust the shifters ill set it up. i still need to figure out the cable shifter for the motor and if anyone knows anything about how the gears in the bafang bbshd or bb0x work i would appreciate it. if there is internal gear reduction it might be easier to spin a higher toothed front chain ring on the bicycle get a track ring on the front idk if it will work but ill keep you posted.

minor things i have to do for the bicycle are the throttle needs to be cut and re sooldered with a female 3 pin. and i have to screw down the display and display controller which are wobbly.
