I understand that our current consumption of petroleum is in the millions of years natural production of petroleum per year of extraction, so there's no arguing that it will renew on a relevant time scale.

Oil is the result of plant matter etc heading deep underground due continental plate tectonics, which is an ongoing process.

This I do know:
Mining Lithium etc for batteries and solar cells is not sustainable.
Also; is it the cleaner, greener route???
1. Storable energy - How we deal with energy and material needs...
They don's need to mine Lithium it's in the sea water. Do not see it as a long term solution. we will need to keep learning.
Have a new batch of oil cooking under New Orléans be ready in 5 million years may need to not change your oil for a while.
