We have gone on before about the way they do construction in Copenhagen, how they always provide a decent path for cyclists, often at great expense. Clarence Eckerson Jr. was recently filming for Streetsfilms in Copenhagen and was impressed by this construction site, where they keep the bike lane open while digging a hole, lifting the dirt over while cyclists ride under.
Apparently, according to James Thoem of Copenhagenize, it's the law. (see an earlier Copenhagenize post on the subject here, where Mikael notes that "The City prioritises the bicycle traffic wherever possible in such situations. It doesn't make much sense to build bicycle infrastructure and then not keep it clear") Clarence writes:
I looked to our right to see this going on which I found completely amazing since in the United States they would have likely closed the road to cyclists. James shrugged and said it was typical and explained why. I saw dozens of cyclists riding just a few feet below the dirt scoop with hardly a notice. Just another reason why Copenhagen rocks!
Now I must say, I have watched the short video a number of times and never saw them move dirt while a cyclist was going through. In fact, it shows the crane operator waiting a few times until there was a break and moving the dirt then, but I assume that Clarence did. He thinks it's great, but he is a bike activist, and I am an architect with some construction experience and I do not.
When it comes to construction projects in North America, cyclists are treated like dirt or worse- they are constantly put into situations of serious risk. But I would rather see the bike lane closed and have to ride around it than ride under this.
They could have built a proper diversion around the construction like they did on this Copenhagen job site, but instead went for the quick and dirty approach of just lifting over the bike lane. Copenhagen is wonderful but sometimes, perhaps we should be careful what we wish for.

A bicyclist led Campbell County police on a more than six-mile-long chase Tuesday afternoon on westbound Interstate 275 before being subdued by a Taser and arrested several counties into Northern Kentucky.
Campbell County dispatchers confirmed the unidentified bicyclist was reported biking on I-275 on the Ohio side of the Combs-Hehl Bridge. Highland Heights police attempted to make contact with the biker, who was described in radio dispatches as being "violent" and throwing objects at officials.
"Lt. Amber Conrad responded and attempted to speak with the subject, who got off the bike, started to flee on foot and became verbally combative," a news release stated.
Police said a Taser was then used to subdue the bicyclist, but he was able to get back on his bike and continue on westbound I-275.
This reportedly carried on for more than six miles and crossed into Kenton County before police apprehended the biker on westbound I-275 near the Kentucky Route 9, or AA Highway, overpass around 1:40 p.m.
The bicyclist was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, police said.
Ft. Thomas and Wilder police departments assisted Highland Heights in the pursuit, dispatch said.
On its traffic website, OhGo.com, the Ohio Department of Transportation described the event, which caused traffic delays, as an "unusual incident."
Additional information wasn't immediately provided.

“He couldn’t control himself.”
The man accused of killing a Queens imam and his aide flew into a fit of rage after the murders — spouting off curse words at a driver while sitting at a red light just moments before plowing into a bicyclist, who recalled the horror to The Post on Tuesday.
“I’ll never forget his eyes,” said David Hunter, a 52-year-old fashion designer from Brooklyn who was biking to pick up fabric for some dresses.
“They looked angry … He had such craziness and anger [in him]. He looked like a madman.”
Investigators believe that Oscar Morel, 35, had just pumped bullets into Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and aide Thara Uddin, 64, before arriving at the intersection of Pine Street and Pitkin Ave in East New York and getting into the dispute with the driver.
“He kept cursing at the guy, saying ‘f**k you, f**k this.’ Everybody noticed it,” Hunter said, remembering how people stopped and stared.
“He must’ve only had five words in his vocabulary.”
While Hunter wouldn’t confirm or deny that he picked Morel out of a lineup on Monday night, sources said he did identify him in a photo array on Sunday.

The East New York resident told The Post he had been walking in the crosswalk with his bike, across Pitkin, when Morel came speeding up to the red light — slamming on his brakes after swerving around the driver he was arguing with.
Modal TriggerDavid HunterPhoto: Ellis Kaplan
“He was close to hitting me the first time, but he didn’t,” Hunter said. “He braked hard and I looked at him. He was out of control. He couldn’t control himself.”
When the light turned green, Morel made a right onto Pine and then a hard U-turn back around in the right direction before speeding up the block. That’s when he came crashing into Hunter — who was now back on his bike.
“I tried to avoid him, he hit me and just kept going,” Hunter said. “When he hit my bike, he dropped me on a parked car. I went flying in the air. He came so fast, the impact was so strong. [My helmet] saved my life.”

Hunter said he the accident left him seeing stars. When he came to, Morel was gone and anambulance was there.
“He just left me there,” Hunter seethed, adding that he wasn’t aware at the time that person who killed the Imam was the same guy who hit him.
“If he had just hit me and that’s it, you could forgive him. But you can’t forgive somebody who did that (killed two people). He did something very bad.”
After he was nailed by Morel, Hunter was transported to Brookdale University Hospital with injuries to his pelvic region and scrapes to his elbows and hands. He is now forced to use a cane to get around.
“He has to realize what he did,” Hunter said, referring not only to his own experience, but what happened to Akonjee and Uddin as well.
“A persons life is not a game. I can’t believe how somebody could do that.”

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) --
There's a worldwide phenomenon known as ghost bikes tributes to fallen bicyclists. In San Francisco they are disappearing and one activist is calling for change in the city's rules for removal.
Ghost bikes are frames and wheels spray-painted white as tributes to bicyclists who were hit and killed.

Julie Mitchell and her family made one for her 21-year-old son Dylan, who died three years ago on the streets of San Francisco after colliding with a garbage truck. "People would stop and pay their respects, they would read it, people would slow down to see it," Mitchell said. "It was making an impact. It was more than just a memorial to us, it was a powerful tool, I feel."
Then one day, it was gone.
"Very disrespectful. Like throwing my son in the garbage," she said.

All over San Francisco, ghost bikes are disappearing. Devon Warner took pictures of tributes that have been removed. As a member of the city's bicycle advisory committee, she's introducing a resolution calling on the public works department to hold off for a year on dismantling.
"I'd like to work something out with the city that would permit the putting up of ghost bikes, of course provided that no ghost bike is posing a public hazard," Warner said.

The head of public works says the current policy is two weeks for any memorials, but he's open to change.
"If it's a piece of art or if it's something that doesn't require a lot of maintenance, maybe here is some common ground to see what's reasonable," said Mohammed Nuru of the San Francisco Public Works Department.
Mitchell says she would erect another tribute to her son, if she knew it would be allowed to stay.

Cops Search For Williamsburg Cyclist Who Allegedly Punched Driver & Robbed His Shades
by Gaby Del Valle in News on Aug 24, 2016 4:03 pm
A woman on a bike pedaled up to a driver in Williamsburg last Friday afternoon, struck him in the face, and stole his sunglasses, according to police. They've now released video of the suspect in hopes the public can help them find her.
Officers say the victim was sitting in his vehicle, stopped at a red light on Wythe Avenue and South 6th Street around 1:40 p.m. on August 19th when he was attacked and robbed by the woman. She then fled on her bike, heading west on South 6th towards Kent Avenue. Although she got away with his sunglasses, the victim took a short video of the woman with a dashcam.
It's unclear what, if anything, provoked the incident.
The alleged mugger is approximately 25-years-old and was last seen wearing a sleeveless red T-shirt, black shorts, and a black baseball cap (she has presumably changed clothes since then). She has long black hair and was carrying a black purse and riding a black and green bicycle at the time of the robbery.
Police ask people with information about the attack to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at (800) 577-8477, or for Spanish, (888) 577-4782. People can also submit tips online here, or by texting tips to 274637 and entering "TIP577".

Police: Bicyclist sexually assaults women as he pedals through Center City, South Philly
Updated: August 24, 2016 — 10:26 PM EDT by Stephanie Farr and Emily Babay, STAFF WRITERS
A bicyclist has been sexually assaulting women in dresses as he rides past them in Center City and South Philadelphia, police say - and as word spread Monday, another possible victim came forward.
Special Victims Unit Capt. Mark Burgmann said police received four reports from Aug. 6 to 13 from women ages 24 to 42 who said they were groped under their dresses by a man as they walked on sidewalks in the two sections of the city.
In three of the cases, the alleged groper was on a 10-speed bicycle. In the fourth, the man was on foot, but Burgmann said police believe it is the same assailant, based on the description of the offender and his actions.
In each case, the man did not say a word, Burgmann said.

I'm going to preface this post with a disclaimer. I'm a lover not a fighter. I'm a peace loving, patchouli sniffing yogi at heart. I really do want everybody to just get along. HOWEVER, tonight...well...tonight we experienced on the Trek Bicycle Store of South Charlotte Trek Store Wednesday and Sunday Group Ride group ride a level of driver aggression I have never experienced before. A driver buzzed a group of 30+ riders cruising in a tight double pace line on Ballantyne Commons Parkway heading up to Elm St, she pulled in front of us completely over into the bike lane almost to the curb and slammed on her brakes. I was in disbelief that a driver would be that blatant but then when we all pulled up to the stop light at Elm, where she again pulled over into the bike lane and confronted her she was as horrible a human being as you can imagine. She was angry, snarky and mean. I don't know what is going on in her life to make her so miserable but I hope she figures it out soon because her daughter in the passenger seat was obviously mortified beyond belief. We are all human beings just doing the human thing. Find your empathy and live a life that compels others to do the same. That's all.
So...I am pissed. I am pissed that this woman felt that her life was more important than the moms, dads, husbands, wives, sisters, brothers..etc..that she endangered this evening. We have filed an aggressive driver report and the officers that were there on the ride are addressing the driver and her family. We will continue to ride and continue to be awesome and have good times.

'I'll f---ing smash you': Truck driver's tirade at cyclist caught on camera
A cyclist has filmed the terrifying moment a truck driver threaten to "smash" him shortly after allegedly trying to run him off the road.
The Yarraville man, who does not wish to be named, was riding two-abreast in light traffic on an overpass on Footscray Road, Footscray, about 9.30am on Saturday.
He claims the truck suddenly swerved within 30 centimetres of him.
"This truck came alarmingly close," he said. "I got the biggest fright."
The 43-year-old cyclist said he then rode up to the truck where it had stopped at a set of red lights and told the driver he had "nearly killed" him.
He admits he then "flipped the bird" at the driver.
The cyclist said the driver got out of his truck and threatened to "smash" him, while holding what appeared to be something that could be used as a weapon in his hand.
"Once I realised he was doing that, I was fearing for my safety and moved away," he said.

The cyclist turned on a camera fitted onto his bike and circled back to get the truck's number plate.
He can be heard on the video, since uploaded onto YouTube, yelling at the driver: "Why are you so angry? What have I done to you?"
The truck driver replies: "I'll f---ing smash you, you f---ing c---."
By this stage, about eight more cyclists from the riding group had caught up to them.
"You tried to run me off the road," the cyclist says, as the driver charges towards him.
"I tried to cut you off? Nah b---s---," the driver says.

Another cyclist, who dismounts his bike, tells the driver to "calm down mate".
The driver, who was heading back towards his truck, then turns around and heads back saying "you better shut the f--- up c---" as he rolls up his sleeves.
"Settle," the second cyclist says. "You don't want to go to court."
The second cyclist then tells the driver to "get in your f---ing truck and f--- off", which further aggravates him.
"Do you want to make me shut up," the driver says, with his fists clenched.
"Don't say anything," a third cyclist yells, before the driver gets in his truck and the cyclists ride away.

The cyclist reported the incident to Footscray police later that morning, bringing with him the footage, a pre-written statement, the truck's number plate and phone numbers of witnesses on a USB stick.
However, he claims he was more upset with the response from police than at the actual incident.
He said the officer he spoke to refused to look at the USB and questioned why he didn't call triple zero.
"I am really shocked," he said.
"He had no interest in anything I presented. He just wanted to question the legitimacy of my report."
After he complained, the cyclist made his report to a second officer.
Victoria Police has been contacted for comment.

Fans stream Nelly to help him pay off $2.4 million debt

Here's the "Dilemma:" In the wake of reports that the rapper is facing a $2.4 million tax lien, folks are streaming his music and offering tributes to him as part of the effort to #SaveNelly.

#HotInHerreStreamingParty has also become a thing on Twitter.

According to Spin, streaming giant Spotify pays artists somewhere between $0.006 and $0.0084 per stream. So that means fans would have to stream his music about 402 million times to help him out if his royalties are on the low end of that spectrum. If he gets paid the maximum per stream then fans only need to stream Nelly about 287 million times.

That's a lot of "Country Grammar."

The social media response has been equal parts hilarious and endearing. One person pointed out that "Nelly gave us hits for the middle school dances. We owe him."

The young woman hit her head hard and lay unconscious on the road as the attacker simply rode off and didn't look back
Woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a man kicked her off her electric bike in what police are treating as an unprovoked attack.
Miss Zeng was riding along just after 8pm when a man on a scooter approached her from behind.
CCTV caught the moment the man then drove up alongside her and kicked her so hard she fell off her bike and slammed into the floor.
She hit her head hard and lay unconscious on the road as the attacker simply rode off and didn't look back.
The woman's electric bike crashed out of control and was later spotted by a passing driver who raced to the woman's aid.
Miss Zeng was taken to the Second People's Hospital in the city on Nanning in south China and underwent an operation to alleviate bleeding on the brain.
She remains in hospital as police launch a manhunt for the man spotted in the CCTV kicking her.
Miss Zeng's boyfriend, Mr Sun, said she was "kind" and has no known enemies.
It is unclear why the man decided to kick her bike.
Reports have suggested the attack may have followed a traffic dispute, but Nanning police have yet to confirm any further details about the case which is now under investigation.

Westmoreland County’s angriest bicyclist is back behind bars, accused of again violating a judge’s orders to stay off his bike. David Smith, 57, is notorious in the area for cycling in the center of lanes on major roads and for his profanity-filled outbursts at motorists who try to pass him. One resident told WTAE that Smith is easy to spot: “You see a biker and then you see 10 or 15 [cars] behind him.” Smith inspired a Facebook page, The Greensburg Bicyclist Spotting Page, on which people recount nasty encounters and share video footage. (“Tonight had a run in with him!” wrote one poster. “Called me a f****head and thr[ew] water at me and then the bottle.”) Much to the interest of this online community, Smith is awaiting trial on eight criminal charges, stemming from bike-related incidents dating back to 2012. He has insisted in court that all charges are the result of police and motorists’ misunderstanding of cyclists’ rights. At a June 2015 hearing, a judge admonished him for appearing in court in his full cyclist outfit and clutching a rock, recounts the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. As a condition of his bond, Smith was ordered not to bicycle on public roads. He has been arrested twice this year — in March and August — after police reportedly spotted him pedaling.

Spinning bike wheels compress flat-filling air
Ben Coxworth
|September 23rd, 2016
Although you certainly can inflate a bike's tires using a compact hand pump, doing so typically involves some time and effort. That's why many cyclists use CO2 cartridges instead – particularly road riders with high-pressure tires, or mountain bikers who may need to reseat tubeless tires. Those cartridges cost a couple of bucks or so each, however, and they're not reusable. France's Production Functional Factory is attempting to address that situation with Bimp Air, a refillable compressed air system that's charged by the spinning of the bike's front wheel.
Bimp Air actually consists of three main components: a generator that's mounted alongside the front hub, a miniature compressor that's attached to (and powered by) that generator, plus a bottle-cage-mounted compressed air canister. The compressor and the canister are linked by a hose.

According to the company, just six minutes of riding at a speed of 15 km/h (9 mph) spins up the generator enough to fill the 50-bar (725-psi) canister with 11 liters of compressed air.
When it's time to fix a flat, users disconnect the canister, pull it out of the cage, hook it up to the tire's valve stem via a shorter inflation hose, then press its release button. Within less than 10 seconds, it can reportedly fill up a mountain, hybrid or road bike tire. It can also be used to top up mountain bikes' air shocks.
Once the inflation job is complete, everything is hooked back up, and the canister gets refilled as the bike resumes moving.

Of course, not all cyclists are going to be keen on riding around with a generator mounted on their front wheel. With that in mind, the company also offers a non-bike-mounted electric pump that can be used to fill the canister before each ride. Potential buyers who choose to go that route, however, might also want to consider the RideAir or Airshot canisters, both of which can be pre-charged using a floor pump.
Bimp Air is already available in France, priced at €299 (about US$336) for the bike-powered version. Its makers are now looking for a North American distributor.

By Chadd Cripe
Mike Mesbergen of Boise is on the front end of what could be a new way to play golf.
Mesbergen is one of at least a handful of people across the country experimenting with a golf bike — a vehicle that would combine two popular outdoor activities.
Mike Mesbergen has used tricycles as golf bikes because they don’t require kickstands and can handle the weight of golf bags. Chadd Cripe - ccripe@idahostatesman.com
“It’s someone coming up with the right bike,” said Darryl Glinski, the superintendent at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle who has tried Mesbergen’s version. “Obviously it hasn’t caught on yet, but I think it will someday.”

Mesbergen has built three golf bikes, which he has tested at BanBury and Warm Springs Golf Course in Boise. All are adult tricycles with custom-built attachments to carry a golf bag. The two latest bikes are Torker Tristar HD models, a heavy-duty version of Mesbergen’s original model.
After playing 18 holes at BanBury last week, Mesbergen considered adding fatter tires, tweaking the gearing and possibly adding a pedal-assist option. His ultimate goal: Create a bike that courses will want to add as a rental option.
“To me, it adds another little dimension of fun,” Mesbergen said.
The bikes could tap into two different niches, Glinski said — players who enjoy the fitness aspect of cycling and those with physical ailments that make walking painful. Mesbergen, because of his feet, and Glinski, with an ankle injury, find biking easier than walking.
“I get to 12 and my feet are killing me,” Mesbergen said. “But biking, my feet are fine. I could probably play 18 more and be fine.”
Mesbergen, 51, operates Mike’s Bikes & Things out of his home shop. He previously worked in maintenance roles for the city of Boise, including at Warm Springs.
He started thinking about a golf bike two years ago, when he borrowed a tricycle for his mom to ride on a visit. The bike ended up in the maintenance yard at Warm Springs for a few days and Mesbergen wondered if it could be used on the golf course.
And he’s not alone in pursuing the idea.
Glencoe Golf & Country Club in Calgary, Alberta, rented two-wheel bikes this season with a golf-friendly saddlebag attached. Pedego has a trailer attachment that is used to pull golf clubs around courses in Southern California. Mesbergen has run across golf bike prototypes in New Mexico and Florida, too.
“It’s starting to kind of pick up around the country a little bit,” Mesbergen said. “... I think it will work. People will get a kick out of it and have some fun with it.”

The bikes would be an ideal fit at courses like BanBury, Warm Springs and Lakeview in Meridian — places with mostly flat terrain and many golfers who could bike to the course from their homes. Retirement communities in Arizona are a natural fit, too.
The challenge is finding the right combination of equipment. Mesbergen has focused on tricycles because they eliminate the need for a kickstand or specialized saddlebag. You can strap your golf bag onto the tricycle and go. A thumb-operated parking brake assures the bike doesn’t roll away while you’re hitting a shot.
“It just sits there,” Mesbergen said. “You don’t have to worry about your balance. You’ve got a chair wherever you go as well.”

The tricycles present a bit of a tipping hazard on sidehills, which is one concern. The Torker Tristars also have just three gears, which can be a problem when pedaling uphill on wet grass, and narrow tires.
Mesbergen would like to add fatter tires — perhaps 3 inches wide — but would need custom wheels.
“In the long term, that’s the way to go,” he said. “It’s more finding the right combination of parts.”
Still, the current model works fine for anyone who’s comfortable riding a bike on some hills. And even on a dewy morning at BanBury, it didn’t seem to cause any problems for the turf.

Scott McGeachin, the director of golf for the city of Boise, says golf bikes are permitted at Warm Springs. The course straddles the Greenbelt.
“I want people to get out and recreate, whatever that is,” he said. “Whether it’s a bike or a cart, it just creates some accessibility.”
Already, McGeachin often sees two or three golfers a day in the summer arrive by bike. They don’t take them on the course, though.
“There’s been a lot of people throughout the last 15 years who have tried to mock up something,” McGeachin said. “I could see people who love bikes and love biking wanting to utilize something like this, but it’s probably a little smaller percentage than you’d think.”

The cyclist was alert when officers arrived and gave a description of the car that hit him, and officers began searching for a gray Mercedes-Benz with front-end damage. They spotted the car a few blocks away, on 18th Street, Miles said.
“The car had front-end damage on the driver and passenger side that was consistent with the bike accident,” he said.
Officers pulled the car over and administered a roadside sobriety check. Aya Ibish, 22, of Laguna Beach was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury and felony hit-and-run causing injury, Miles said.
Hours earlier, an Aya Ibish posted on her Instagram account a photo of her and a new Mercedes-Benz, a post that was later deleted.

Here it is anyway:

http://dailybruin.com/2016/09/29/ne...lp-student-cyclists-steer-clear-of-citations/ :? Why should a cycling ticket affect a person's driving record, since no license is required? A cyclist with a drivers licanse is penalized, while one without cannot be? :x

New online course to help student cyclists steer clear of citations

Cyclists who receive a citation will be able to complete an online course to have their citation dismissed.

On Oct. 10, UCLA Transportation and UCPD will launch BikeSafe, an online program that will give bicycle safety lessons to educate riders and help them avoid citations, according to the UCLA Transportation website.
Cited cyclists may choose to take the course once every 12 months instead of receiving a punitive mark on their driving record. The course costs $75 and takes approximately an hour to complete.
Citation fees, on the other hand, can cost upwards of $300, said David Karwaski, senior associate director of UCLA Transportation.

According to the California Vehicle Code, cyclists are held to the same standards as drivers and may be penalized for running stop signs and having unsafe brakes, among other infractions.
Transportation services and UCPD wanted to ensure safety on UCLA’s dense campus and started discussing the program a year ago, Karwaski said. A team of UCPD and UCLA Transportation staff pitched BikeSafe to the Los Angeles Superior Court, which was pleased to cooperate because it was overwhelmed with citation cases, Karwaski said.
He added the court hopes other Los Angeles municipalities take on this idea.

Student cyclists said they would rather take the course because it costs less than a citation.
Jasmine Mok, a fourth-year linguistics and computer science student, said she has never received a citation but would prefer to take the course if she ever received one. She added she thinks it would help cyclists become more aware of cycling rules.
Jonathan Sherwood, a graduate student, said he didn’t know cyclists could receive citations, but he would take the course to remove one on his driving record.

Action star Arnold Schwarzenegger ran afoul of the German police for cycling through a busy train station - but got away with a selfie as his fine.
Officers in Munich's Oktoberfest station met the star of Terminator and other Hollywood blockbusters after berating him for his dangerous actions.
Schwarzenegger told officers he was having trouble walking, and offered to pose for a picture as an apology.
Police tweeted that cycling was forbidden "even for the Terminator".
Two cyclists were seen racing through the station during a busy lunchtime period, the police said in a statement. One was stopped and warned about his conduct.
But the cyclist answered that he had to leave quickly because he was "the bodyguard of Arnold Schwarzenegger" before cycling off down a dead-end platform.
Thinking it was "a bad joke", officers waited for him to return - which he did, with Schwarzenegger in tow.
The star-struck officer "found his voice again", the statement said, and warned the pair that cycling at high speed was dangerous.
Police say the former governor of California - who was born in Austria and is a native German-speaker - admitted his mistake and apologised for his bodyguards.
Schwarzenegger is touring Europe promoting a series of sports festivals, and recently attended a training session at Barcelona football club.
