I went to look up some info on an old post and they are gone. Anyone know what happened or a way to access them

How old a post?

There is stuff going back to at least 2006, based on a quick search for "bike", which I figured ought to be common enough to go back pretty far:

The topics in "General Discussion" expire after a period of time or number of topics.

For example oldest inactive topic is Mar 06 2009.

I just had a look in "E-Scooter and Motorcycle General Discussion" and its oldest post is May 10 2009. So it looks like it is getting trimmed too.

Seems very strange to trim anything from a forum like ES, except for spam and perhaps stuff in Toxic. I'd personally even leave ForSale / Want posts, because often there end up technical bits of info in them that are quite useful to refer people back to.

I wonder how hard it would be for an admin to turn off all the autopruning, and go to old backups to restore all the old threads from.

I also wonder how hard it'd be for an admin to setup a wiki for the site; then I and any other member that is interested could create and edit/fill articles of various types with info we run across in posts that would be useful to preserve and organize. I know the wiki has been suggested before, and given how poorly the PHPBB search engine works, with all it's little restrictions, it'd help a lot of people over the long run.

Admins have been PMed.

IIRC, There is a wiki already, but I don't have the URL handy.

I thought I turned off the auto-prune on everything except the For Sale section.
I'll double check that.
Remember that nutsandvolts went and deleted all his posts.

I don't mind if someone deletes their own posts, that is their choice. I was actually trying to look up some info from my first builds from over a year ago, and I went to the end of the motorcycle threads and it ended later then my old posts. I guess it is my fault for not keeping the threads personally, I just had no idea that they got trimmed. I'm used to some of the old motorcycle forums that I used to frequent and the posts never left. They were back from around April of 08, and some were even earlier then that.

Yes, the auto-prune has wiped out some stuff I was looking for as well. I was pretty sad about it. The General Discussion area used to be auto-pruned, but not the technical forums.

I turned it off a while ago on all but the Marketplace and Spam forums, so from here on in things will be more permanent. With the level of donations to the 'Sphere fund, I think there is no good reason to prune potentially useful stuff.

There is at least some older stuff there, though unfortunately it looks like archiving of this site stopped in 2008 and not much of it ever got archived before that. A shame, as it would be really great to have this whole place available in such an archive. Is there a reason to not allow Archive.org to do so?

No reason not to archive.

I just found the E-Scooter and Motorcycle General Discussion was auto-pruning again. I turned it off. I'm not sure if I missed that one or it somehow turned itself back on. No doubt some good stuff was lost.
