. . .I simply try to remind myself that i am the one in control here not them and i actually pay these guys to do this to me so i better be getting my money's worth. So go easy on them. Let them earn the money you pay them. . . .

The first, and last, time I reminded a cop that I was the innocent citizen paying his salary I got slammed against the wall and frisked.
Another tip: don't try humour. They don't get it.

Here's an idea go to the cop shop and tell the police you are out and about at night on your E-Bike and want to enlist in a "watch" program. Then, if they have something like that and most place they do then you get a sticker to display on your bike and maybe, just maybe a little more consideration when they pull you over to check you out. :D

Firstly excellent post :) I'm in a similar situation with looks long hair down the middle of my back and rather large (albeit now i cant stand LoL) I might see if the local police have similar 'sticker' etc will at least show up there and make them aware of my ride so as they might leave me alone :) Also, they are only human and as you rightly pointed out both get lied to on a daily basis by 'actual' criminals and have to make it home to their families, at the end of the day they're trying to do their job the less hassle we give them the easier it makes it....well should anywayz, but as they are human you get assholes in all walks of life, just have to deal with it best we can and move on i think ;)

LOL, you guys have long hair, too? I may be over 6'1", but glasses and a ponytail don't exactly make for the most menacing of appearances. Though I'm starting to get a beard...

Good thing I wear a belt. Damn "thugs". *insert gangster rant here*

Well...i havent had a hair cut in ~5 years money is better spent on other things :p

When i see the American movies or even the news and see those tools with 27 inches of underwearz showing as their crotch hangs around their ankles all i can do is shake my head and think what a waste of oxygen they use...

One of the funniest things I've ever seen was an episode of Viva La Bam in which "Compton-ass Terry" (as if the name wasn't funny enough) is running along when his pants fall down around his ankles and he faceplants the asphalt.

Man have I got it made down here in Costa Rica. Being a foreigner and over 40, I'm always treated as a tourist. Cops are few and too far between, plus the regular police have nothing to do with vehicles or roadways, and there are even fewer transit police. The locals treat them both like dirt, so a "Si Senor" goes a long long way, and if you're actually in the wrong like speeding, $5-10 works like a charm and gets you on your way with minimal inconvenience. Here if it has pedals and doesn't have a gas motor larger than 49cc, it's a bike by law, and my goal is to get a speeding ticket just for bragging rights around here. Plus bikes are commonplace on the streets here, so drivers are more accustomed to dealing with cyclists mixed in with traffic, probably making me safer than most of you guys.

My suggestion for anyone hassled more than once by the popo is to go out of your way once or twice to buy some officers a cup of coffee or a coke and chat them up about e-bikes. Be sure to get their names, because name dropping goes a very long way with these guys and will typically get you on your way a lot quicker if you get stopped. Keep in mind these guys are doing a job that none of us want and typically deal with the bottom rung of society on a daily basis. Of course that doesn't excuse hassling innocent people out of pure boredom, so that's where some name dropping and a "Look officer, I'm just trying to save a buck or two on gas and get some exercise to while I'm at it by riding my bike to work." might help speed you on your way.

In Texas if you say "Look officer, I'm just trying to save a buck or two on gas and get some exercise to while I'm at it by riding my bike to work."...you might be called a pinko commie. It ain't patriotic to use alternate means of transport. It ain't patriotic to NOT use gasoline in excess.

I never tell the police officer i am an innocent civilian and that I do indeed contribute to paying his salary as I am all to aware that no matter what I say the officer is going to take his sweet time determining that for himself. What was it my Father always told me? " The guilty dog always barks first and barks the loudest". Bearing that in mind, the best thing to do is full co-operation and maintain a courteous and calm submissive stature. Doing this will more often than not speed things up considerably so you can be on your way.

Well the cops in Dallas ain't all that bright. I think the technique of using the pedals when spotting a cruiser is the key here. Now someone should make battery covers that resemble backpacks and attache cases....

...or you could just put your batteries in an attache case or backpack... :)

I was stopped just a few minutes ago.

Few important points to consider..........

I was in a queue of traffic on a 20mph road doing 25ish.

He was somewhere toward the back of the queue on an off-road motorcycle - I guess he could only see my head.......

He didn't spot it was powered but I did tell him it was - 200W and 15mph.

He was happy and went.

I *think* he thought I was a gasser moped riding minus a proper helmet - ie - kid on a bike........... didn't clock I was a bike till he was right next to me though - no doubt busy negotiating the roundabout and the traffic - as I had been!

No way he could have known that was electric motor-assisted. It looks almost invisible!

That body block by the cop will cost NYC a pretty penny! I hope the cyclist is OK!

the cop is Patrick Pogan and is now on desk duty and had been on the force 3 weeks.

The biker, Christopher Long, of Hoboken, N.J., was arrested because he was obstructing traffic in the heart of Times Square, a criminal complaint said. He was charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The complaint said Long, 29, deliberately steered his bicycle into the officer, causing both of them to fall to the ground.

Long's next court date was set for Sept. 5.

What is interesting is the reactions of the posters who all say the cyclists deserved it for riding bikes on the road and blocking traffic.

Hmmm.. Biker's speed is only about 20mph, let that cop do his maneuver at an ebike weighing 100lbs at 35mph.

Don't automatically take the side of the CM biker ... a lot of those folks are in it just to f*ck cagers up.

That biker had caused trouble earlier, and was being looked for by those two cops. The cop in question tried to get in front of him to stop him. He got shoved off his bike when he failed to stop for the cop, and tried to go around him, failed at that, and attempted to "check" the cop and continue past.

Expect the cop to get exonerated.

Flee and try to push past the RCMP, and I suspect you'll get it even harder.

Look at the video. There was no hand wave to Stop. No lips moving Speaking/yelling to Stop. It's assault plain and simple. On top of that the cop lied his ass off about what happened in his report and it's entirely contradicted by the video.
"The complaint said Long, 29, deliberately steered his bicycle into the officer, causing both of them to fall to the ground."
The video shows the cyclist avoiding the officer until the officer began to Run and Charge the bike!
I suggest everyone call the NY DA's office and enquire when assault charges will be laid against the officer. They get enough calls and they may get the message.

It will get sorted out ... video does help there, for sure.

I just won't take the word of a CM rider automatically. We just had a group of these thugs in Portland try to beat up a cyclist who, in his cage with family in tow, chided them for blowing a stoplight.

If you seek out confrontations, you will certainly find them.

Yeah, I don't know what happened before the video, but to say "deliberately steered his bicycle into the officer" is an outright lie IMO. He tried to AVOID the cop and the cop clearly ran towards him.

To say "causing both of them to fall to the ground." is laughable. Like he ran into the cop and they both just fell over. Video clearly shows the cop shoving the guy.

Yes, perhaps if he was given a clear signal to stop earlier, a cop may have been in his rights to do the "cop to bike" pit manouever.

But tell the truth cops and cop PR people, and perhaps we might believe you more often. Did he fail to stop and you PITd him or you wanna stick with the story clear contradicted by the video. Long live video-cams and citizens who wield them in the name of truth and justice !

And yes, we have plenty of jerk cops etc. here in Canada too. Cops have a tough job and I support them in general, but stupid krap like this makes me very cautious around cops and hesitant to support them.

There was a report out here in Britain recently about the police
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7427132.stm

The Civitas pamphlet said the trend meant many "law-abiding middle-class" people no longer trusted the service.

I regret to say that my own personal experience bears this out. 10 years ago, I would chat with officers and be happy to have them around at an incident. But now, after a series of bad experiences, I'm extremely wary and treat them as the enemy.
