50$ Amazon controller

I decided to play around with a cheap controller that has Regen braking Amazon.com : ChongXiao Intelligent Brushless Sine Controller 36V 48V 60V 72V 84V 2000W Maximum Current 50A Aluminium Alloy E-Bike Brushless Motor Controller for Electric Bicycle Scooter : Sports & Outdoors . It has pretty mild Regen but not bad . It's capable of 50 amps but my bms is 40 amps so starts cutting out on hills a little at full power. One thing I was a little mystified about was my no load speed on the previous controller was 44 mph this does 55 mph my 35 amp one was 32 to 35 mph speed on flat this one will hit 40 mph on 48 volts . I thought big gains in speed always came from higher voltage this must have built in field weaking or something.
 
First one going back keeps jumping between sine wave and square wave. I realize on these mass produced electronic items you have to get lucky to get a good one . Easy returns so will keep trying.
 
I have one of those controllers and had it on a 36v bike for awhile. It all worked, mild regen on braking.
What I'd really like is more documentation. Is there a way to tweak the settings? Alas, this thing is a black box.
Maybe someone who is adventuresome could take it apart so we can look at the innards.

I really liked it when on sine wave but square wave feels like any other dirt cheap controller and for some reason it keeps reverting to square wave so hopefully the replacement works.

I have the second one doing the same thing won't stay in sinewave, was wondering if you could tell if yours is operating in sine or square wave. My direct drive hub it's obvious when it's in square wave. My old controller was sinewave but twice the size of this, really wanted this to work. I guess I could get used to the noise but it's kind of false advertising that these are sinewave if it only stays in it for a few minutes.

Swapped motors figured maybe that other motor had a loose hall sensor will give it a go this evening. If it works out these things are great for the size and putting out 50 amps.

This fixed it something wrong with the halls in the other motor. This controller is pretty amazing for the price total silence really smooth, on speed 2 of the 3 speeds seems like my old 35 amp controller power wise. The third speed really flies bike will do 40 mph on 48 volts must be a little field weaking or something. Doesn't seem to be getting hot either but I am staying on the middle speed mostly.
 
Update: This controller has a little higher top speed if you run square wave but you give up the super smooth takeoff. Will still hit 37 mph on 48 volts which is plenty for me . Now I just need to rig up a cruise control button and a 3 speed switch also will see if the alarm function is useful. The Regen is pretty effective at lower speed and hills of say 8 % or less, at 30 mph plus it doesn't slow you down very fast but still keeps you from overheating your brakes. One good thing about not to much regen is my axle nuts have not loosened at all.

I think speed 2 on these controllers is normal/rated output, and 3 applies some sort of timing advance (not sure it’s technically field weakening). On my cheap controller, watts go through the roof when switching to high. If you have a watt/current meter, you might want to verify the current output. The controller I have is rated for 80A ($70), but was delivered at 60A, so I did a shunt mod, up to 90 A. These controllers are so cheap, I have a spare just in case, since the harnesses make it a quick swap if I ever kill it.

My battery is a 40 amp bms controller says it's 50 amp max, when running this controller in square wave it was tripping the BMS in speed 3, in sinewave I seem to be able to run speed 3 without tripping the BMS and top speed is a little less.
 
Hi, I opened mine up a while ago and did a "shunt mod" It goes great after the mod, but the throttle becomes sensitive and jerky.

Nice build,are you running in sinewave or square wave because when I had sinewave working it really smoothed out the take off. But a DD hub is way different than your setup.

I always ran it in sine, tried Square only shortly.
No idea how the controller will behave with another motor after you mod it.

I see you are running sensorless and close to a 100 amps, impressive if I ever get a battery that capable it will give it a go also.
 
Actually i run it with sensors, tried without, useless. It ran on the stand, but there was no riding it, not possible. Maybe with another motor it would.

Changing the battery won't change the phase/hall configuration.
 
Not sure, I ran out off battery once (52v so shut off at 3v per cell 42v) and thought I could just unplug the thing and by re plugging it would recognise it as a full 36v battery...(42v)

I have the orange amazon controller fardriver chinese clone... as far as I could tell the seldom learn wire only set the direction of movement. But I have not tried it with a different voltage to be honest

I have been swapping between 48 and 52 volt batteries seems fine . The free
