Advice about a motor upgrade

Hi, i need some advice regarding an upgrade on my bike that i want to do.

Currently my specs are:
- 500w 48v Bafang geared motor with a Chinese controller
- 48v 16A li ion battery with Panasonic cells

The bike has 20" rims and 20x4 tires. I'm using it for my 16 km daily commute to work and other errands around town.
With this configuration and no pedalling (as you can see from the photo i removed the pedals completely ), i get 37-40 km/h, and a range of 40-45 km. With the upgrade i'm aiming for a 50 km/h (or slightly above) speed.

And now my questions:
1. do you guys know anything about this motor, and controller (reliability wise)
2. can this motor help me get the speed i'm aiming
3. will the battery provide enough energy for the motor
4. if i can use the battery, what kind of range should i expect

2. Maybe. The spec says no load speed of 50-60, so if that's 60 fully charged, then it may possibly hit 50 loaded.
4. If you are going to ride at the top speed, then it will take roughly twice the energy to ride 50 than it does at 40, so just take your current range at top speed and divide by two.

It would have been more comfortable if someone knew something about that controller and motor

I was hoping of getting a 25-30 km range, which from what you said is doable considering I'm not riding full throttle all the time.

I think I will try my luck with that motor, as a winter project... being a direct drive should be considered as upgrade right?

The motor is a direct drive motor - it is a 9C (nine continents) clone. It should be very reliable since it has few moving parts. It is the same kind of motor that I have and I'm nearing 10,000 miles on mine. Reports of 20,000 miles are not unusual.

As for the speed, the problem I see is that they don't tell you which wheel size gets you the speed specified. I'd get that info straight first. My bet is that the motor is of the 9C 2706 type and that the speed indicated is for a 26 inch wheel. Your upper limit will probably be below 50 km/hr using a 20 inch wheel at 48v

The controller and LCD are KT types. These are well known and of decent quality. That's what I've been running for about two years.

OK, thank you for the detailed info. From what you say it's beginning to look like a good option for me.

I will ask the seller which size of wheel gets the specified speed.

Not necessarily. Which Bafang motor do you have?

The 20 inch wheel could be a limiting factor.

Price is a bit expensive for the ebay link.

Why not buy from a confirmed legit seller, like Leafbike or Leafmotor, or get the Edge 1500W with alum innards instead of stamped steel for better heat dissipation.

I’d say don’t buy a motor where they are not offering a choice of motor windings. You need a fast Kv with your small wheel and low voltage. Even then... you might be OK keeping your battery, or not. That is about the range that you are going to end up with (maybe half), and the power it can supply to the faster DD hub.
