Animalector's Ebike Builds

Just get the gng 1.1 chain drive and shunt it to 2800 watts. Change the primary side for forty bucks if too noisy. Thats what i will be doing on the d8 I'm modding next. Then laser cutting proper side plates. Dont like the LR design.

The bbs is soggy.

Sorry for the confusion - I meant chain primary. People seem happy with the performance but swap the pinions and chain for much quieter kart chain as the stock stuff is noisy and agricultural.

I rode a guy's stock 650w in the grampians (shunted to 30amps) and liked the direct-ness of it.
This guy from Perth seems happy enough.

Ok, So I thought I could possibly squeeze a cyclone motor in the space as shown below.

IMG_20140616_180758_E-S (Custom).jpg

but they're 100mm diameter at their smallest and the space available is just under 100mm in the frame. SO that idea won't work. One option is the AFT mid drive, but according to their website site they seem a bit pricey. I might give them a call / email to see what we're up against.

otherwise it looks like the GNG is the only other answer. hmm. Anyone got any suggestions. I'm not after massive power. just enough to make XC trails interesting and not so much weight so once I'm at the top of the hill it's fun to get back down.

Ok, Anyone got suggestions on the following two options:

1. Cyclone Mid Drive Kit 48V 960W (using 1680W motor and 20A controller ) with spares shipped for $550 USD
2. GNG chain drive primary 48V 450W - $450 USD (as per the buy now option on the website) will contact for spares options

and finally this is not an option since it's over budget...
3. Lightning Rods EV kit $800USD Plus shipping ($80USD??) plus controller cost $100 + throttle cost $20, etc

Thoughts between 1 and 2...

I'm still on the lookout for a suitable DH bike to suit the BBS02 as well.. so I may still go that way.

Thanks
Andy

Gday Andy,
I had a shed cleanout on the weekend. Might have something of interest to you that will give you a bet each way. Will send you a pm.

quick update. I bought this frame from SamD. (thanks). I've been saying all along I want a downhill frame.. and that's not changed.. I Still "want" a downhill frame but for the moment to test the BBS02, I've gone the XC route. If I think the BBS02 is a motor worthy of bolting to a downhill frame I'll find one and build it up. But I just want to get on the road and see for myself.....

So.

Shock gate control lever needs to be switch to the top to fit the battery pack.
IMG_20140823_163626 (Custom).jpg
Shock switched around, might even need the can to be swapped to the rear I'll test that tomorrow but a new problem installing the battery. I found that you need significant clearance above the pack to slide it in and out of the cradle. The pack physically fits in the cradle, but to get the cradle bolted to the drink bottle holder mounts you have to have the pack off, and to get the pack on, you need about 15mm clearance above the pack..
My options are:
  • Duct Tape.... (solves all problems)
frame mods... I need maybe 5mm to get it in.
battery pack mods... I still need the same 5mm but I think I can shave it off the pack
IMG_20140824_193114 (Custom).jpg
So as shown in the photo, I can flatten / grind / cut this portion of the pack off, there is nothing underneath that is structural, or electrical, so with that gone it'll slide under the frame mount and sit down into the cradle, then I can mount the shock and it should all be nice and snug.

Maybe I'll get time tomorrow night to test this theory.

yeah same, I'm curious to this as well. Gng is better on a dh frame with 2-3kw on tap…however the bbs02 is a pretty flawless motor that would still provide 1200w through the gears , lets say 2hp with light pedaling..

well some progress.. got out the ryobi grinder (dremel) and started hacking the battery pack. There's plenty of unused space right where I needed it to be.

First job was to get the pack installed in the frame. had to cut the section shown in the pics above to get it to fit. That worked. Also had to cut a small amount at the bottom of the pack to clear the seat tube, just a small V to make it fit nice and snug.
IMG_20140826_180131 (Custom).jpg

Then I had to remove the battery pack lever to clear the shock. I was still able to remove the battery from the cradle without using the lever, so I chopped it out..
IMG_20140826_202513 (Custom).jpg

So now it's all installed, and snug. the shock clears the battery pack, and because of the geometry won't foul on the battery throughout it's travel.. I

I still need to figure out how to remove the boxxer forks from the D8 (the top fork mount is pretty snug and won't budge), and the headset is in the mail. I have to modify the bottom bracket tools that I bought so I am able to tighten the bottom bracket nuts properly. but that should't take long.

I need to buy a 9 speed twist shifter, new shifter cable, and front / rear hydraulic brakes (tektro Dorado again)

That's it for now.

Nice workaround Andy! I was going to suggest rivnuts below the downtube with some kind of secondary catch.

Lucky about the suspension link path. Looks great. Did you seal the top?

Even better let me convert the d8 for you.

I should've given you some plastimake to seal that hole! http://www.plastimake.com/

Looks like a very nice setup for BBS. I think a good XC frame is best for the BBS as opposed to downhill frame. Having a frame that pedals well is a big advantage when using BBS drive as you will find the drive encourages you to work with it.

When you get it finished, we should organize a blast around Lysterfied. I have a ball riding around there on my BBS powered Specialized Camber.

Sam will be in it for sure. Hopefully our soggy BBS's will be able to keep up with him. :p

Ah kep you'll kill me around lysterfield.
Let's do some mullock heaps over my way ;)

Just bought a specialised demo 8. Might see me on a bbs on one of my own bikes yet.

Headset pressed, forks removed, but not yet installed. I need some spacers, since the 1.5" headset doesn't fit beneath the top tripple clamp bracket. a 3mm or 5mm spacer will do the trick.

headset spacers are purchased... and on their way

Also, considering getting another set of Tektro Dorado E-brakes. about to pull the trigger on an order. I wonder if anyone else is interested again..

Andy

Newschoolnerd at long island electric bikes may still have some?

That Avanti frame with the clamp on saddle section would make a sweet e-trials frame!

*Just spied that this is for sale

Update.. got the forks on (I still am waiting on more spacers, but I bought one this morning just to get the upper crown on..

Looks good I think. I plan to raise the front / lower the forks in the clamps to give a bit more of a slack feel..

Andy

really?? even with big fat 44mm headtube??. Oh well.. it's not like I am going to be doing big jumps with it. I'l get my downhill bike for that (someday). I'm using these forks because... that's what I had. I could sell them too and get something else.. but really I want to ride the blasted thing.. still have to replace the Male-Male connectors that were supplied so I haven't powered up the kit yet...

*EDIT* Just after a short ride, the rear is actually a lot more plush than I expected.... nice..

Well, Even though I was going to get an early night, I decided to chop off the original mis-matched power connectors and solder on some andersons.

good so far...
