One thing I've noticed about bike riders, the assholeness of the rider seems to be proportional to the closeness to campus. No suprise, I was reallllllly an asshole then my self. Not that I've improved all that much that category, but those colledge years it was at it's worst for sure. I used to cut a fence to cross a freeway easier about 4 times a year back then.
Thinking some more, where else do you see anybody riding a bike in this town? Nearly nowhere. Why is that? Simple, commuting from farther on the bike, you left the house an hour earlier than most drivers. Therefore, the older more courteous and law abiding riders simply don't exist! You'd be still sitting on the can reading the paper when he rides. Only that late to class jerk riding the wrong way up the road near NMSU exists in this town.
Great article and good info to know. Most drivers around this area make an effort to be courteous to bikes and trikes, provided that they see us! My wife's new magicshine really helps, at least from the front cause now there are two of us flashing their little leds out! Maybe this will help with the blind bluehairs in '75 Buicks who can barely see over the steering wheel. There is a dangerous species.

When I'm driving, I'm surrounded by idiots in cars all day long. For some reason, idiots on bicycles stand out like a skunk in your path, causing panicky drivers to react badly. I'm glad I commute by bicycle and also drive for a living. I can identify with all kinds of idiots everywhere, and hopefully I don't act like the idiot that I am.

It's smart to identify potential idiots as soon as possible. Driving or biking, I usually identify types of vehicles and the types of maneuvers they take. Watching the "body language" of a car is important to understand what's going on in their heads (or not going on for that matter).
