I put my Lith ion 37 vlt 15ah LI18650-40R4 10S6P lithium ion battery pack in a foam rubber surrounding and then a steel box around that and then it is stuffed inside a nylon bike rack bag, the outside of the bag does get plenty of air. It is on my mountain bike I am wondering if i need to install a fan in the spring and summer or if i dont will the batteries be able to take the heat. It gets around 100 degrees F and in the pack it will probably be more. I can run a small fan but I am not sure if it will do any good because it is encased the way it is. and will the fan just cause more heat and be worse then if no fan is installed at all.

Let me know your opinion. I am running this on a crystalite cruiser electric motor with a 40 amp controller. The amps are limited by the battery at 25 amps.

what is considered the safe operating temp of the pack?

You really do need ventilation for that thing, your batteries are basically in a thermos. You definetely should add a fan, it has to be able to pull outside air in, and that air also has to be able to find its way out the other side. So your going to need two holes preferably on opposite sides of the battery box. The fan also should be mounted snugly up to one of the holes to make sure the air has to make its way across the box cooling all the batteries before it finds its way out the other hole.

They said just open up a two centimeter vent hole and open the bag and it will be fine. So that is what I will do for now. Been having trouble finding a 36 vlt fan anyway. My lith ion are in cells joined together so they are already each basically an airtight can. Hopefully the tech at the battery factory is right. It would be nice to get a few more points of view from the board so if anyone else cares to share their experience that would be great.

I also went to check out some of the lates izip
bikes and the cells are sealed in the frame with no visible venting that i could see.
