Yes they are amazing little motors, I love mine, you can of course run them at higher power but have to accept that they wont last as long, to be honest I have not had any problems with heat in the windings other than the solder melting on the joints, my problems at high power have always been the one way bearing and the gears.
Don’t be tempted to fit any metal gears though, they sound terrible and don’t help, even fitting one doesn’t help, lightly lubed nylon gears work just fine, I have taken my bike off road many times and use it for work every single day, the motor in my work bike has over 12,000 miles on it and has only ever had 1 x clutch go on it, it has always been run at 50-60V 40A, old school crystallite controller analogue controller and Magura throttle, the old school xlyte controllers have very smooth ramps on the throttle, just what you need to help keep the gears in good shape.
I have 4 x geared motors on different bikes including my electric BMX, I have an Xlyte X5 direct drive motor on one bike, that’s a beast but it is dog heavy and I much prefer the lightness of the geared motors, if you know how to treat them the BMC or MAC geared motor is a fantastic motor for an assist, all out speed freaks may need to look elsewhere like Chromo or fat DD Xlytes.
Again good luck with the repair and much praise for a very nice looking machine.
