BSOs: Bikesdirect Motobecane 300HT or Gravity Basecamp? Unboxed on pg. 2

Utah Trikes Has RST and Amazon Bucklos and Suntour, but all are heavy (five + pounds), coils and no damping (AFAICT). Everything else is even worse, but maybe one of these will smooth the ride a bit. Universal Cycles is my go to place and they don't list any, so your options probably are very limited.

Got a few hundred miles on the Gravity Basecamp and can say it's been a good bike after upgrades!

Worst thing that happened is the top cap on the 7 speed shifter came off, but the shifter still works.
My factory second unit also had the bottle mounts welded on crooked which made mounting a battery via bottle mount very messed up looking.

I've decided to switch to a hardtail 29er going forward to maximize comfort. The basecamp 26er with a suspension seatpost and nice fork rides well but i'd like even better.

The ideal BD cheap bike i identified with the longest wheelbase is the Gravity HD.
Versus the Basecamp, you get an extra inch of top tube length / wheelbase per equivalent size; that's nice
We also have a much more solid looking top tube interface.

The bike seems to be a copy of the Specialized Rockhopper, geometry wise, except for a higher seat tube, and a different headtube angle.. which can be easily changed with a taller fork or 27.5" in the rear.

Funny that you can still buy a Specialized with quick release wheels and oldschool standard parts still.. i would almost fork out the extra money for the Specialized seeing that it's a few lbs lighter, but the Gravity gives me much more battery space, and round tubes which are easy to mount things on. :)

Will start another thread on this later!

There’s normally minimum two screws securing sti style shifter covers, surprisingly it’d come off by itself.

The gravity frame looks good. Plenty strong you’d expect. If you want all out maximum front end rigidity you’d have to find something with 1.5” headtube and gussets, but that’s entirely unnecessary for street riding.

So, mid-drive instead of rear hub, hence larger wheels?

My first ebike was a Specialized Rockhopper 29er. Currently riding a Giant Reign x1 (mid-2000s?) FS DH 26".

The 26" FS DH platform is way more secure, stable and comfortable on the rough roadways.

29" vs. 26" is not that much of an improvement. Long travel full suspension is the key.

I know there are tradeoffs with rear suspension (rear rack). I use a rack that securely clamps to the seat post, and has "wings" that extend down from the sides that secure the pannier lower attachment points and keep them from flapping into the wheel. Holding up well, as long as I am careful not to overload it.

Have you looked into racks that mount on the seat stays?

In this case it's a plastic cap that isn't screwed on.

Yeah, about as radical i get is dropping off a curb / some very light offroad.

Yeah, either that or a pair of geared hubs.. tired of the very disbalanced weight of a big rear hub.

I bet.. my Turner O2 was real nice too.. miss it.. and there's a bunch of frames on ebay RN :O

That's the problem.. as soon as i get rear suspension, i forgo massive battery room in the center and rear carrying ability. I don't like that.

Another thing is i like to downsize the rear wheel for lower standover height.. on my 26er, a downsize means a 24" wheel, which is on the border of too small.

I want a 29er because i can use a 27.5" rear wheel and also use narrower tires, which means i have less sealant volume to fill, and also lower probability of puncture, which is a massive problem out here.

Yes I looked at those but did not want to add yet more unsprung weight to the DD hubmotor rear suspension.
