Saw this at electric scooter parts and thought it might be of interest, Curry plenetery 4:1 for $50, seems cheap if it could hold up. They also have a free wheel built into a belt drive pulley that I had not seen before.

Also a great referance site for bike frame parts in one place for would be frame builders, includes some suppliers I had not seen mentioned before....

Good luck

Gerard

I think that's the same one All Electronics has for $9.50:

Lots cheaper at AE. ;) If I had the spare $$, I'd probably buy a few to play with.

Any idea what they weigh? I'm trying to figure out how much re-shipping some to Olaf would cost, and have apparently not been looking in the right places to find the weight info on the web.

I am not sure how strong they are. They appear to be made by Matex; though I do not know which model they are:
http://matexgears.thomasnet.com/viewitems/all-categories/planetary-gears-torque-range-45-300in--lbs-?

Looks like anywhere from: 70 kg-cm / 61 lb-in to 350 kg-cm / 300 lb-in.

But I think it is this one:
75-4MAD 70 kg-cm / 61 lb-in. 4:1 D-Cut Female Serration 228 grams
http://matexgears.thomasnet.com/item/all-categories/planetary-gears-torque-range-45-300in--lbs-/4mad?&seo=110
based on the description

If so, that puts them at about 1/2 a pound each. A lot less than I expected (I figured at least a couple of pounds each, possibly a lot more).
