Deecanios first build the "DC1"

Hi Mate,

yeh the wheather is piss poor, still this is the kind of thing i plan to ride in so do you think everything is sealable to a point where you could go out in this and be ok?
i have some of the Self amalgamating tape - its like double sided rubber that seals itself? i plan to use it on most of my connections - i have read about the hot glue and silicon and stuff but i think the rubber is best, as you say it can be easily removed if needed, i'll probably put silicon in all my andersons and then rubber tape to further seal.i dont see any reason why i cant thoroughly waterproof as ypedal has rain ridden and i remember a vid of steve riding through water about a foot deep?
anyway i'll check for good racks and then get the controller mounted - do you think the cotroller would be ok on a rear rack? as much as i don't want to have one i could put up with a small one to house the controller that will go just below the seat - originally i thought i would put it in a perspex box then on the rack - do you think it would get too warm in a waterproof box?
envious here, im sitting at home too but ppl keep wanting me to work!!! ;)

cheers

waterproofing needed down under. hope the weather gets better for u D!

The most vulnerable is the throttle, i really wish someone would come out with a quality weather-proof throttle....

do u mean the throttle assembly? or the connector?

hi guys,

yes i'd read somewhere that the throttle is a concern from water, can short out and stick on full throttle
Also i think the DB needs some attention to be waterproof?
I think i will definately persue waterproofing though as i won't get to ride at all otherwise - even if i do my level best with the waterproofing and fail it should at least make the bike spray proof so i can ride if its just wet and not raining.
Thanks for the tip Y i'll look for some goop in the uk :D

cheers

Hi All,

I have been thinking about waterproofing my throttle as I have already had one expire on my scooter due to water ingress.

I plan to use a motorcycle throttle assembly and have the cable pull on a standard ebike thumb throttle which will be mounted inside a waterproof chassis box, along with my controller and batteries. I we only need to waterproof the cable as it enters the box.

These look great and are pretty cheap too.

Should look very cool on my chopper 8) and D, on your off road bike it will be one less thing to get damaged if you end up in the dirt.

Cheers,

Ian

The assembly itself is what i refer to, the wire is easy to seal up.. butt he rotating section of the throttle ( half twist in my case ) is not sealed very well at all..

I have only heard of the " Throttle Full-On " problems happening with the LED versions so far, if anyone knows of a report of a Non-Led shorting out . i'd like to know about it !

hi Ian,

yeh they look pretty cool - more suited to choppers with the styling i would say.i had thought about some of those mx guards for the levers too as i often come back with bleeding knuckles where i tear through bushes lol.
no doubt about it sooner or later i will be eating dirt
i was hoping that the "preperations for winter" thread would have all the info im after but alas the guys started posting about clothes and gloves instead of bike preperations

cheers

I agree see post above.

I have an idea for a resistance throttle that should be waterproof, It's not compleatly new, it is based on a throttle that is used on the ZAP mk2 scooter. The basic idea is to remove the electronics from the handelbars and put them in a box out of heavy rain.
:?: Does anyone want to know more :?:

Hi all

Ok D keep calm!

Chopperman has the right idea
I plan to use a motorcycle throttle assembly and have the cable pull on a standard ebike thumb throttle which will be mounted inside a waterproof chassis box, along with my controller and batteries. I we only need to waterproof the cable as it enters the box.

the basic idea is to use a twistgrip gear shifter with the ratchet removed so it turns with minimum friction, removal of the ratchet is not that difficult.
cost less than £15, when I get a moment I will pull one apart and blog what I had to do this should be with a new one I've getting for the chopper.
An inner gearcable is used because it fits the shifter but the outter is brake outer to allow tighter turns of the cable.

Then comes the magic black box (in this case it is only because it is the smallest box I could get) and the simple electronics within, a return spring, a liner pot (avalible from farnell part number to follow the brass innerds from a 3amp connection block (wilcos 50p ), small bolt or screw to hold spring, 3 core wire terminating in the connector of your choice.

Pictures drawing and diagrams to folow.

Yes, something like a pot box would work.
I think they are fairly common on golf cars. Use a standard motorcycle throttle that pulls a cable. The cable goes to the pot box, which is located in a nice dry spot inside somewhere. There's a lever, return spring, and cable attachment on the pot box that connects to the throttle cable.

HEHEHE.

ok i'm calm again, well its a good idea but we need some parts that can be used and a diagram of how to install it?

Hi Fechter,

do you use the scoot in winter/rain?
what suggestions do you have for waterproofing?

cheers

D

Hi all
just finished making up another throttle black box.

Basic list of conponents:-
box
45mm 50k lin slide pot
32mm length 6mm dia expantion spring
super glue
epoxy glue
plastic for packing
small bolt to use as a anckor for the spring
1 strip of 45a ,3a screw cable joiner(get from wilkos for less than a pound)
watch out for how to make thread when I make the next one up including how to alter a twist grip to spin freely.

Hi All,

Geoff thanks for the throttle thread mate, thats immensley useful :) i wasnt worried you posted it here but Ypedal was right it deserved it's own thread where it will get picked up on more as its a great example.
i have actually managed to get a few bits done lately but too much to discuss in one hit so i'll just bash up more pics and we can pick the bones later ;)
some of the pics are from my phone so forgive the shoddy ones!!!

 HELL YEAH !!!!!!!!!

Now that's how you build an E-Bike ! No cutting corners on that rig .. that's a custom job and then some.

Great show D !!!! simply awsome !

* Stands up and claps ..

Now.. the big question : Have you driven it at 72v ? !

Hey Y
thanks for the comments, means a lot as i've always admired the norco.
i haven't ridden yet as i need to do a few more silly bits, put the din on the halls, get a p clip for the new arms and build the seat properly  but i hope to just pop the normal seat on and go for a test ride at the weekend, watch it piss down with rain now.
this is the slightly lesser 72v@20a controller as opposed to the 72v25a knoxie is testing (think jozzer has one too) but it should still rock on.
we aren't sure if it's 20a all the way or if the controller lowers to 20a as you put in more than 50v but either way it will be hooked up at 72v which should push it up past 30mph
i figure worst case 72x20 gives me 1440w which is still 200w more than i had plus double voltage to improve top end - i'll see how she runs and then get the more powerful controller IF i need it, this gives me the option for 1800w way enough to send the puma into a frenzy hehehe - stay tuned !!!!!!

cheers

D

Hi All,

Just to let you guys who've pm'ed me know that i've lost my home connection so have been trying to reply from work ;p
I'll be testing this weekend hopefully so thx to Jozzer for fixing my fault :)

cheers

D

Good luck m8, both wit the internet and that 72v controller! Keep us posted when you can :D
(I take it the controller arrived OK?)

1800w is fine for the Puma, you can eek a little more out, especially during the winter, but I'd suggest you pop a thermostat in the motor to cut power if the motor overheats first.

hey mate yes came this morning, didn't get time to thank you today work was manic :(
back online at home as well now so will keep yu posted :)
hehehe lets see if it works now, may change the mini din for xlrs - are they any good?
cheers jozzer,

D
