Hi Steve, Kim,

i hope your basking in the positive comments we've had here mate, tis truly a thing of beauty you have made
i'll crack on and should be riding by this weekend, just about to leave for work then i plan not to bother sleeping tomorrow and just work on the bike until im too tired for it to be wise.
i forgot Richards work!!!! not even a pic of the great charge arrangement yet so i will endeavour to get a picture of that up tomorrow as well!! please tell Richard thank you for such a user friendly charger :)
I'm keeping an eye out on ebay for you Kim as i know you love those triple crowns - who doesn't? they are awesome and i'm sure you'll find some soon.
Anyways better run, i'll pop more photo's up late tomorrow and hopefull ride at the weekend.

Cheers,

D

We were going to try to get one of the Optibikes here for a head to head with Deecanio's bike, perhaps we could all get together for that?

Steve

Hi,

If you do a head to head comparison with the Optibikes vs Deecanio's Kona please post the results :!:

And if its not too inconvenient please compare the efficiency (energy use), even if its a cursory comparison.

Thanks!

Mitch

Hi Mitch,

we are hoping to all get together before the winter sets in, im sure we'll get some data as well as some video.
Hopefully bob will bring opti (bob is our lacer and general cool young bike dude with mad skills on two wheels) also we want to get knoxie down so we can make a day of it.
we will hopefully have some great video to show as well as an array of bikes :) , stay tuned!!!
knoxie, think we need you to call the date?????

Cheers,

D

where is this match of the titans going to take place?

Hi Geoff,

well we are just discussing possibilities at the moment, hope you are thinking of coming along too? it would be nice to get some uk guys together to chat and ride and just have some fun.
Initially we were talking of meeting at jozzers (brighton) but to be honest I'm up for meeting anywhere that suits everyone.
im in essex, knoxie is in oxford, steve and bob are in and around Brighton so we are a little scattered but nothing we can't overcome. I'm busy this weekend, knoxie the next 2 or so and steve's always busy but im sure we will come up with a date soon????? all uk ev'ers welcome?
I'm looking forward to trying knoxie's rides, the kmx's,opti and maybe if i'm feeling brave the jozzbike, even though i've been to steve's a few times now i haven't had the courage  next time for sure as it's an awesome build and one i must try as i'd love to have a roadbike myself.

Cheers,

D

Hi All,

here are the shots of the problems i had and how i've managed to work round them?
key problem was the lack of axel on the cable side but it worked out nice, put in a few pictures of the charging setup that Richard did for me and also the popular "show us the inside" shot :)
words with pics so you can skip if not interested :)

Cheers,

D

Well, i've ridden the kona and all i can say is i'm sooooo dissapointed.
But only thats there's not enough time in the day!!!!!!!!!!
i loved it.that's an understatement.

where to start?
well first of all a massive, massive thank you to everyone that contributed to my bike in the last two years, it works this well because of all of you guys and all the tips i have had here from practically eveyone on this forum.
i wont embarass them but certain individuals here only need to ring me now if i can help them with anything!!

ok im getting teary :)

bike built, sat afternoon, 69v on the db. not fully charged but good enough :)
took the bike up my road and first thing to notice is the puma is slightly more noisy than my bmc, not really much in it but definately a little more noisy and a different sound, slightly higher pitch maybe, any way i gassed her up a bit up the hill and second thing to notice was it's definately got more punch!!
the bmc used to have not much of a throttle response to half way then it would go whereas now i blip the throttle and it lunges forward, took some getting used to (as did having a thumb throttle as mine failed) but i find the delivery from the A123's to the puma is far better applied across the range of the throttle than before.
being as i wasn't fully charged i thought i would hop straight on the trails and have a quick blast off road as that's what if for and whoooa this is a very different beast from the last ride, the 24's are totally awesome, i felt sure footed as a mountain goat and leaned the bike over with gay abandon, super nice.
flicking the bike from side to side is now much easier, having halfed pack weight the bike is at least 15lb lighter and it shows, especially with handling. The 20's with the two heavy lipo's used to give out on the front end in a moderate turn and i'd either put a foot down and save or go down, on the new wheels/tyres/pack i never even got to close to making the bike uncomfortable, quite amazing difference.
oh yes and the power, torquier  its difficult to gauge how much better it is as i ride differently now than i did last year. I use the pedals all the time.but the bike is quick uphill, very quick, at one point late in the ride i was in 2nd and pedaling reasonably uphill at around 16mph, i gave it full throttle and combined with 42/15 gear the front rose half a foot and then fell again, well you couldn't wipe the smile off my face after that.
i love this bike, the gears are working beautifully and im never off the pedals!!! even though i know the puma will pull me up any hill unassisted that i ride there's a big difference between having the motor pull me up a hill at say 12mph and then having the ability to pedal and hitting 20mph on the same hill with the front end popping up  unreal!!!
the gears work flawlessy, im so pleased i cant tell you, i have atop assist of 23mph ish and it's just right.
when im riding my speed only tops 25mph when im on the bridelways riding from one trail to the next but apart from that it's more normal to top out at 25 or below on the trails so now i have first, second, third its a dream.Up the gears, burst of power, brake, down the gears - i've was never this involved with single speed!!! :):):) it's frocking great, oh and acceleration? well using the pedals and just shifting up from a sitting position leaves the what was behind far far behind  , nice and smooth too.
i used 4ah and travelled 8.6 miles - thats about what i expected, i think db showed 34wh/mile ??? not sure if thats right.
top speed? mmmmm well only 23mph?
max amps 30?
hold on these readings didn't seem right to me, i thought it was much quicker top end and i must have pulled more than 30a on this pack wtf???
then it dawned on me, doh!!!
because i didn't know which was max and which was min on the adjustable current pot i had set it to halfway for the first ride!!!
also i didn't change the db to reflect the wheel size lol what an asswipe!!
oh and i had started at 69v rather than 74v fresh off charge.

anyway none of that mattered at all, i'd been running with a 30a limit and i had loved the torque - theres still 20 more to play with? damn.
as im runing less voltage now i would guess my top speed will be 30mph but i'll do a fresh charge top end test on full amps at the weekend :)
i'll post more data up once i get a clean run but as you can probably tell im absolutely stoked with the way the bike performed, i would say that i have achieved my goal now and anything beyond this is just icing on the cake.
Am i happy????? well look at that stupid grin?????????

cheers all,

D

hi D
great build you've done a good job there as has everyone else.
Well when and where is it going to be this "Clash of the Titans" as I've called it, at jozzers I've had a word with a friend and if he is free then I've got a ride to wherever I should have have the viper going and with me. my friend will a camaraman for the day with both still and camcorder,it should be a blast.

Awesome stuff buddy glad to hear your so pleased with it too, bike looks amazing why wouldnt you be and performance to match props to you and all that helped ...now get out and thrash it to bitz so we can watch you put together another hehehe.... well done :)

Kim

The inside of that box is beautiful.

Not as beautifull as Andy's "stupid grin" :D

I'm glad it's as good as you hoped, sounds like alot of fun! I'm looking forward to having a go myself:)

Good work on the back end, looks very pro!

Ciao

Steve

Fantastic :D

Thanks for the close up pics of the box. It looks sweet! (you're making me wonder how many A123's could fit in my DH Team triangle  )

The ride report was awesome, and it sounds like the ride was a well deserved one too! Can't wait to hear the results at your rig's max potential 8)

Hi D,

Great to hear you like it so much!

Hi All,

thanks for the comments, yes i'm really loving the bike!!!
i have friday and monday off (although it's raining in the uk today!!) so hopefully i will be able to get out everyday and have a real good thrash, then i'll have better figures for you and the wife has said she wants to come too which means i'll have decent quality footage too :)
Voicecoils, i cant tell you how good the 123's are, just sublime in their power output, chargetimes and weight.
you could have a mock up to see, just get the dimensions of your triangle and then see how many 26mm circles you can draw in it???? even if your triangle is smaller than mine you will save more space with a tiny rc controller so i think you could have the same capacity pack which i find just right.
Hi Kim, thanks bud, it really has left quite a grin on my face, im even happy at work damnit!! build another :?: lol, its taken me 2 years to get this one done
Geoff good news to hear, maybe we will get a day just to meet up and chat and ride after all. As i said i can pretty much do any day with my only pending social engagements around Nov 8/9th, apart from that i can make it to any meet we set up.
Knoxie should have a browse soon and let us what days he can make then i think we are set :) it will be great to meet you and paul for th first time and im hoping we can find a dry day and just have some fun!!

Cheers

hi D
I was looking at your pics, is this the wires of a temp senseor you have in you motor?
file.php

I've had comformation on transport to the "Clash of the Titans" when you lot set a date I'll be there.

HI Geoff,

yup that's exactly what it is - you'll have to ask joz if you want to know the type it is but we put it in as we worried i may fry the puma at 3kw.
After sats ride at 30a limit the motor was barely warm so i expect it to hold up pretty well at 50a but i guess its a good idea to have that to fall back on if i get carried away (likely).
i'll be running full power this weekend so i'll get some real figures then - does anyone know what the mm setting should be in DB for 24" ?? i did the math and i reckon 1915mm??? is that right?

Cheers,

D

Hi D,

The only way to get an accurate figure is to measure a few revolutions of roll-out on a reasonably flat surface (with the weight of you onboard....).

Hi Miles,

nice to see you, how do you mean mate?
do i sit on the bike, mark the tyre or something then roll forward one complete turn and measure the distance?
sorry to be a bit dense.

Cheers,

D

deecanio said:

That's it exactly. Better to do a few turns, measure the distance and then divide by the number of turns, though.

Great stuff miles, i'll be checking it tonight, initially just done the math from a 26" but your right i should check it more thoroughly as the tyres make quite a bit of difference and i want an accurate speed reading.
that 15t freewheel is sweet, any plans for yours yet?
I'm keeping an eye on Matts work as i'd like to try th rc gear but that'll be over winter if at all this year, for now im totally happy but i know i'll want to lose the weight of the hub eventually. i think that with a gearbox and rc motor mounted to the seatpost i could really let rip with jumps as the notor wouldn't take such a kicking, that would be the dogs danglies

Cheers mate,

D

Your bike looks great, looking forward to trying it sometime. It's nice when all the effort finally pays off!

No immediate plans for the 15t. I got them in case they became unavailable again.....

I'm working on RC stuff, too, now - lots of ways to use it, have to decide what to try first..... :)
