Get one of these with a blown engine/ trans and convert to electric.

One thing I remember from the days long ago when I was interested in kit cars: normal doors are hard to do both well and lightly.
True. :(

The benefits of side openers or gull-wings: In a downpour, the seats have some cover when entering/exiting the vehicle.

"how did they make it 2250 lbs ?"

The Wave II had a huge battery. One hundred, 100 Ah cells, 33.6 kWh. Probably Thundersky, or similar LiFePO4.

Weight is the enemy of efficiency. Batteries are heavy. The fewer you use, the fewer you need...sort of. :)

I think you meant 10 batteries ? ...
.. but that only accounts for 500lbs,..so 1750 lbs without batteries ! ... still a "fattie"
..I suspect another over engineered steel chassis ! :?

From wikipedia:
"The Li-ion Motors Wave II is a vehicle that has all the creature comforts that have been grown using heating, air conditioning, power windows, GPS etc. and can still transport all the weekly groceries and more in the rear of the vehicle."

We don't need no stinking comforts

Just couldn't help it ...... for all you rednecks ...

If it had pedals and a 750-1000 watt motor would it be a "bicycle" ?

Your redneck trike got me looking on youtube and I found this. Makes me wonder the legal definition of a trike. Is it three tires... or three wheels! What if it is three wheels, and the real wheel was really wide and held 2 tires...

I want to build one of these, except I would like a single seater and I will probably use a 600cc gas motorcycle as the base. I am thinking along the lines of a streamlined ultra commuter that gets 50 mpg, but still has decent power and acceleration. I heard that it's best to start with the windshield and then build around that, is this what you guys are finding? Anybody researched Kit airplane fuselages and windscreens as a beginning? If you are going to build a DIY Aptera, this is the most logical beginning I would think.

Here is a side by side:

Here's another:

This is what I am thinking for the cabin, thanks Burt Rutan!

This made me think of taking the body off of a Corvette ZR and strapping a saddle on the torque tube :D

That Sunny is exactly what I want to build. Last trip I made to Florida, I found the dealer for the Can-Am Spyder. Spent 3 hours crawling around on the floor checking it out. Didn't have the Cajones to break out the tape measure, BUT, BUTTT, DID talk the guy out of the only Brochure he had.

Had a date set up to go for a spin. He would not allow me to drive it, just ride shotgun.

Unfortunalety, never got the chance to go back.

The Cam-Am uses a Rotax engine, is bigger all around than what the Sunny appears to be, and, costs over 10G's. Imagine shipping that to Costa Rica.

I am right now, looking at Balsa trees as I travel around, and, have been studying Vacuum forming. I want to make ALL the bodywork as Vacuum formed panels. Also thinking about a "Uni-chassis" by embedding the chassis into the plastic floorwork, so the batteries have a nice place that's also weathertight, and makes the framework more rigid. Need to find the "Plastic" sheets, down here. Hope to put John on that assignment. He should be interested in panels as well.

I already have the 20HP rated motor, the Goldwing Swingarm, 2 Ninja 250 front wheels, at least 1 CVT located, IF I go that route, (want regen braking), so, that may not work. Have at least 1-3 Vacuum pumps, hopefully still stored in Pa., at a friends house, and, a smaller vacuum pump here already, for forming the Solar Panel project. Have a complete Ninja front fork, bars, brakes and controls, and 1 front fender. Paid $10.00 for all that, and, picked it at after arriving at the airport, and heading to my Sons house, so no shipping.

Have the TIG welder and the MIG welder in Florida, and, my Son is damn good at that Tig stuff. I hope to have all the specs and drawings ready for my next trip to Florida. I can build the front end and carry that or ship it down here. Chassis I can build here.

Figure to use the CA as a major part of the dash instrument panel. Been scoping after market lights and such. Used to have an upholstery repair and recover business, so, seats are a piece of cake (The Aussies piss at their projects)   (Hi Kim, hyena, Chris, Timma, etc)

Would love to have a Sunny to copy from, but, I can do mine by feel.

The Aptera project has come unglued with so many different ideas and no direction, so, I'm concentrating on my idea for now. SEE, this thread has REALLY gotten off topic, EHH

Guilty as charged. But I willfully corrupted your original concept of an Aptera knockoff by resident professionals into an open/ DIY concept, for two half-baked notions:
  • If the Aptera were less complicated, it might still be progressing, or even selling.
If that simpler Aptera design were not owned by a single entity, it could not be bought/infiltrated and buried.

An open design of a simple, practical platform (a mouthful, I admit) might lead to some significant developments. Consider what could happen if that platform were embraced by technical schools as a teaching tool. (Think "Arduino".)

Some iterations might look like tanks, some like spaceships, some like dune-buggys or trucks. Some will be hopeless, but some others may be "Apteras" that proliferate.

TD, not complaining. :) :) Just stating the facts, only the facts.  I have been reading on the Aptera forum, and found out a LOT of things that went haywire. The original design, for instance, has NO proprietary claims. It can outright be copied with no repercussions.

Making it a leaner would be nice. Lots of interesting ideas, and, some a little far away from the Aptera "Rebuild" idea. No problem with what's been posted. Just no direction, YET, as Hillhater has posted a couple times. 8)
