Wondering if anyone has manged to find a decent sized frame bag that will fit under the top tube and right in front of the seat tube that will hold a couple of the standard (BP12-12) SLA batteries. I'd like to redistribute some weight and free up some cargo space on my rack. Was thinking about making something but I figured I'd ask first.

D-man did something like what you're talking about. Follow this link:

Maytag has taken to actually strapping the batteries to the frame using zip ties.

What you're talking about doing isn't very easy to do well.

Yeah, it does look like it'll take some planning. Since I'm a WWII history buff I was poking around my old US web gear and noticed that the M1936 Field Bag (http://www.wwiiimpressions.com/images/armymussette.JPG) might work pretty well and look cool too. I figure open it up, wrap the flap around the top tube and close it back up and it'll fit pretty nicely. Then I need to find maybe four good canvas or nylon straps to to secure it. Maybe two straps vertically around the top tube and two horizontally around the seat tube. Still, we're talking about 18 lbs it may take some work.

May take a shot at using this bag: http://www.academicsuperstore.com/market/marketdisp.html?PartNo=736317&sourcecode=s10142&promocode=se02K9 and its strap and then securing the whole thing with this velcro tape as a base layer ( http://www.rei.com/product/618740 ) and finally secured with a series of maybe 4 or 5 of these straps ( http://www.rei.com/product/709044 ). Should probably hold on 2 SLAs pretty securely. We'll see....

I wouldn't trust the bag I use for regular use of 9 lb sla's. Its only a $10 dollar bag and I really only use it for light/medium duty shopping. I've loaded it full of grocerys and stuff and it works pretty good. But I take it off when not in use because of the wind drag. Seems to affect the range some.
