Freewheel Crank Set

I am interested in building a chain drive bike that uses all 21 gears. My bike is an upright mountian bike.

The first part I am researching is the Freewheel Crank Set and have read all I can find about it in this forum.

Has anyone used this set and if so how did it work out? I like the fact that it has four chainrings.

I saw those posts but they are not using a tripple chainring in the front. Is this possible using the Eno (white indrustries?) freewheel and putting the motor up front AND use a tripple chainring such as in:

Why not? You just need to add more chainrings to the adapter.

Why do you need so many gears with a motor?

Why do say it looks cheap (not the price obviously )? If the quality is high the price might be acceptable.

I like the motor location (in front) as opposed to the Cyclone.

I would like to build an Ebike with a Crank drive so the motor takes advantage of the gears and use a SRAM 9 speed (or maybe a Rohlof or Nuvinci) rear hub and get rid of the derailers altogether.

I'm not sure how best to do it. I don't like the Cyclone because:
1. I'm not sure it can be geared properly in relation to rider cadence. Optibike says with a Pedal Cadence of 80 the motor will be in or near its optimum range.

2. I don't think the quality of the Cyclone Components is very good.

3. I don't like the motor location below the crank.

Yes, I want to keep the gearing and use a chain drive from the front. I may put the motor in the triagle above the crank though.

So, yes I want tripple chainrings (with a fourth chainring for the motor) on a freewheeling crank. Of course saving money on this setup wil be good! Can it be done and still have good chainlines?

It can certainly be geared down to cadence rpm. The reduction will be the same as if it was driving the chain.

Have a flick through the EV parts area for the transmission parts thread. There are much cheaper options available. The 500w vs 650w cyclone thread also has some really good info near the end about making your own freewheeling front crank setup.

Mitch, the Cycone motor seems to be pretty sturdy at this point. The rest of the hardware included with the kit is in a whole different league (lower)

Those motors look suspiciously like the MY1018 Unite that some of us are using! The stuffs not that expensive, but if thats a brushed motor, there are cheeper ways of making that driveline!

The planetary reduction is all metal gears with moly grease lubrication. Built like a tank basically Pretty sure the planet gears have sealed ball bearings in them but I would need to strip mine off the bike to double check. It is about the only part I didn't take reasonable photo's of.

Straight cut gears so it is a little noisy. Not sure if I am just getting used to the motor noise or the gears are bedding in but it seems to be getting quieter. Being on a trike my motor is right behind my back but once I am up to speed I can barely hear it above the wind and road noise.

Thats because the motors are made by Headline motor Taiwan (http://www.headline-motor.com/main_e.htm) and then resold with the lower quality components that Cyclone makes. I swear they must have a monkey on their CNC machine because the quality of the machined Alluminium motor mounts is terrible.

Yes, not much added value....

I've been thinking about the possibilities for using the Headline motor sans gearbox - it's probably quite efficient (the 97.6% figure that Cyclone quotes seems a bit far fetched, though....).

Greenspeed trike, cyclone 650w mid drive and a ping 24v20a.

is from late 2010, and it already says "topic does not exist" there. So it was gone already by then. My backup is from mid-2011 or so.

I found references to that thread in other forums (like motoredbikes and here on ES itself) from the same time frame, but no copy of the thread itself.

F=1 means it was in General Discussion, and so if GD was still set to autoprune after some time period, my guess is that it was trimmed by that, before autoprune was turned off. The oldest posts in GD are from early 2009; everything before that is lost probably because of autoprune.

This is one reason I don't think autoprune is a good idea in *any* forum or subforum here on ES, because you never know what data you will lose because of it, since discussions of important stuff (important to *someone*) occur in all sorts of threads in all the different forums.
