Full Face Helmet

Yes, it was you that I was talking about who was the first I had seen with a helmet. Glad you had that on too! The drop looked a bit violent. Thanks by the way for responding to my question about speed way back when I first saw your video. Again, the quality of the video's really good. I appreciate you sharing it with us despite the mishap. At least you're okay. Folks, we got a survivor!

For future videos, it'd be awesome to see something not only in first person (although the first person perspective gave us what you were intending to show and did it very well).

I think most bicycle helmets are just gestures rather than anything that increases safety.

-agreed, about as useful as a good head of hair.

I've been wearing the full-helmet for the last year & I'd wear full body armor too if it didn't inhibit pedaling. I like the full-face shield to protect my eyes from rocks et al.

If I had the choice between that:
Lazer-Oasisz-side.jpg

and the ones I typically wear like these:

I'd pick the latter; the shell is thicker and harder; and seems more likely to protect my head than the former (whcih seems to have the extremely thin shell typical of bicycle helmets--I don't like those because each time I have been wearing one and had an impact, it's pretty well taken the helmet out of service completely, and some of the impacts if they'd been just a bit harder would have reached my skull because of that).

Sorry I can't find any better pics of them right now.

This one is what I wear when it's really hot:

Except I think mine is a "gen1".

and this is what I wear when it's cool enough to do so:

I'd kinda like one of these:

if I could find one really cheap like I did the skate/bike version.

I probably SHOULD be wearing one for 30MPH+, but let's be honest here, I'm horribly reckless and overconfident.

I'm not actually liable to be caught in one until 50.

Unless I move somewhere where the commute involves mountain trails or something. Then I can use looking cool as an excuse. Luckily, however, seeing as I don't have anything capable of going anywhere near even 40, me being in some horrible, traumatizing accident in which a full-face helmet would save me some serious grief is a significantly less likely scenario.

If you must use a helmet, this is a good choice

Exactly the one that I now use.

It's functional, looks cool, and protects your whole face (not just the top of you skull).

And believe me, I know what a face-plant to the pavement feels like and it is not an enjoyable experience.

+1 Floont... Im planning to get a parachute to use in my daily commute after finishing my cromotor build.
To be truth I already have a very nice MX helmet that is light and not hot. But believe it or not I feel so safe using it that it ends up being more dangerous.
MX helmet ll be kept just to ride in the night or in a storm, or in a storm at night.. humm with a storm at night I would probably use a car.

Wow, that IS a cool helmet! I gotta look into that baby!

I saw a man yesterday that had crashed on an ATV going 10mph. He hit his head against a car bumper and had a depressed skull fracture, orbital (eye socket) fracture, and knee fracture. Lost hearing in R ear too. He told me the last thought he remembers as he was flying in the air, "I'm going to wear helmets from now on."

So, as I ride my ebike to work, I often hit 30mph with cars darting in an out, I am resolved to upgrade my head protection. I'm looking for a full faced helmet. I have a big head, so extra large would be a better fit for me. Does anyone use these helmets? What has your experience been?

These seem pretty popular on the board here. Mine is on the fedex truck to be delivered today.
There are a good amount of threads on the subject do a little research and you should find them.

I'm deformed too. I measure 64cm (25") around my head. Walmart doesn't carry anything that will fit, and, so far, I've been too cheap to buy online. But I'm open to suggestions.
Another issue is which level of protection is reasonable, a motorcycle or a bicycle helmet? It seems what's described as a motorcycle helmet is preferable in terms of protection, but we also have the perception of law-enforcement to consider. If you wear a motorcycle helmet, a cop might stop you as though you were on a motorcycle. But the cop may ignore you if you wear a bicycle helmet. A bicycle helmet expresses innocence.

+10 on that. I spent an inordiante amount of time trying different helmets for eBike use. The AGV-Blade has the best performance/price point and is still lightweight. Note that this is a 3/4-Helmet. The review is here.

For the guy that had the bumper crash - that is a rough way to learn.

Once upon a time when I was in my early 30s I had a Yamaha TT-250. We’d go ride out in the desert, a place called Sand Mountain, east of Fallon, Nevada on full-Moon weekends. My bike didn’t have a headlight but there was enough reflection off the sand so it wasn’t a huge problem. It’s dark, I’m racing off after a cousin when I ran smack dab into a little dune, burying the nose of the bike into the sand, and my head came straight down onto the cross-member of the handlebar. Thank the maker I had a nerf pad and full-faced helmet: I bent the bar down an inch, and felt as if I’d been cold-cocked in the jaw. I was very lucky that night.

It will be interesting to see what the OP settles on.

Funny, almost 30 years ago I lived in Reno Nevada and had a Yamaha 250. I remember crashing off road; it messed up my knee. It was after that accident that I sold my Yamaha and that was the last motorcycle that I owned... I've been on ebikes for the last 10 years.

I appreciate the research that you've done. I think this person that crashed would have been much better off with any helmet, even a regular bike helmet. In the last few months I've seen three people with preventible head injuries (bike accidents without helmets). I like the blade helmet (trade off of comfort and protection) and I think I will place the order tonight before the memory fades... Thanks for all the comments.

Yea I bought my helmet based on KF's review and it's a very well machined product.
One of the things you buy and your happy with what you get. You can find them for 60's , but have to sacrifice
on color options or pay a bit more and get what you want. that's what I did to get the green one.

Im about to go out on my 3 mile hike in the cold and was wondering how funny I would look wearing that thing ;)

Thanks again KingFish for the review you sold me.

Just an update. I ordered the Blade from Amazon x-large. It came today and it seemed to fit well. I rode around the block. Visibility and comfort were good. I felt well protected. Not bad for $75.

Looks like they're releasing an even more ebike friendly blade with great big vents and a rain cover stored in the neck. Add the external sun visor and this looks like the perfect ebike lid. I just need to work out how to get one...

Now that is cool! 8)
emergence, where did you find that style?

All we need now is an integrated peak (wouldn't it be nice to have both?) they make one for Blade...
Or the external sun shield. I wonder if it whistles when retracted?

Might have to get one, KF

This style is now on the international english agv site but not the US one.

http://www.agv.it/prodotto.asp

The international site has no sales capability though and the local NZ distributor is non responsive.

I didn't realize you could get the peaks but I think if you get the external sun visor that would be all that is needed. The peak on my mtb helmet just makes it want to pull backward at +50kph, though I guess with a proper helmet strap and fit that will be less of an issue.

Yeah, i'm thinking of just getting one of those off ebay but the shipping is pretty expensive to NZ. How is the ventilation on the current model?
