Very cool! what is the top speed? What is top speed in low gear?

Whiplash, all the details are in a post about the middle of page 10. The top speed in the video is about 50 kph. The overall top speed in 3rd is about 56 kph. 1st gear top speed is somewhere between 28 and 30 kph. I haven't really noticed as I am busy shifting to second.

Great video mate top job, i must say i was shocked to see paved roads in New Zealand, that must be new :-| Your bike is hella quiet shall direct people that whinge chain drives are loud to this video in future...thanks for taking the time and effort too film the video bud class effort...

KiM

Thanks Kim,

I used my still camera on a handle bar mount. I am going to try and make a body mount like Ypedal's for future videos. I thought it was going to be a lot shakier. I forgot to tape over the mic slot, so I am surprised there isn't lots of wind noise. The bike is louder than it sounds in the video, but not loud by any stretch. It is quite distinct and mostly the sound is the motor, not the chains. It is all about proper chain alignment and keeping them lubed, as you know I am sure.

Paved roads, yup we got a few of them a week or so before you did in WA.

Good idea on the custom mount, i will be doing similar, i am using a trashed tripod
the lil 'gimbal' arrangement on top that screws into the bottom of the camera is still in good shape
I haven't looked into if the camera has a 'special' thread or if it is a standard metric or imperial
number...Cheapo tripod off fleabay would be the ticket to getting something that screws into the camera
base if the thread is 'unique' to cameras only...Best of luck with your mount anywayz ;)

haha yes we might of been later on the roads but at least we have plumbing
and don't have to run down to the creek for water like you 'Kiwilanders' do :p

I did the same thing for my handle bar mount. I can't remember the standard thread on a camera at the moment, but I am pretty sure it is imperial. Just have a quick look on google for camera mounts and you will find it. The best part of using a tripod head, is you can put the camera in any position you want and still have it shooting forward (or what ever direction you want) and be tight on the mount.

Well it is later and time to reveal my battery tube cap solution. All the little things are coming together. So... I made a quarter turn sort of thing out of the caps. I used two pop rivets opposite each other in the tubes themselves. Then I notched the caps to slide over them and twist a little bit to hold them in place. Below are pics of the trial I did on my old tubes that were too short. I did the same thing on the tubes I am using, but hid the rivets on the top of the tubes under the foam. I may paint the rivets on the bottom and touch up the paint on the tubes when winter comes and I can't ride as much. Anyway here are the pics.

Here's a vid of my trip to work. I'm still using the handle bar mount, so it is a little shaky still. I have just over 100 ks on it now and everything is going well. My battery tube caps need a little adjustment as they work loose after a few curbs. Also, I am getting some large t-bolt hose clamps to replace the tie down straps I am using to hold the battery tubes on the bike with. That will make the tubes a bit more solid as they move a little with the tie down straps. Once I sort the caps, I'll be very pleased with the finished product. It is all very sold and feels and looks quite production quality to me. Nothing looks homemade or cobbled together now. Just a 1420i for charging and it will be a solid easy to use setup. I'll post some more video when I make a new bracket for my camera.

Here are most likely the final pics of the bike. Well, at least for some time. I got some large t-bolt clamps to replace the tie straps I had holding the battery tubes. They work great. No movement in the tubes and it looks more solid as well.

I am entertaining the thought of a fuse or breaker and a switch. That should also let me make things a bit more water tight. Maybe in the future.

I'll post some more video after I make a new camera bracket.

Anyway the pics...

NICE! Looks like you got it all worked out this time! Great running bike!

Thanks Kim, they definitely are. I think beefy is the word. The battery tubes aren't going anywhere.

I cut out my camera mount today. I'll get some pics before I clean it up and then after.

Here are some pics of the camera mount I just made. I have put it on the chest strap of a pack. I walked around the house to try it out, but haven't been out on the bike with it yet. I will soon though. It should be less jittery than the handle bar mount. It is just a 5mm piece of aluminium and and small tripod head. I'm bit bummed the drill bit wandered and the tripod head isn't centered, but it seems to work well. (no drill press)

Tried my new camera mount today. Unfortunately, when I lean forward on the bike it shoots my handle bars and the ground. Kind of cool to see the speedo, but the ground rush is a bit trippy and may cause seizures. I have added some foam to the lower portion of the mount to level it out. I'll give it a try on the next ride to see if it is enough.

Clay

I did get some video from my new camera mount, but the first go wasn't aimed well. It got mostly my handle bars and the ground. After a small tweak to raise the angle of the camera, I got some more footage. It is better, but pretty shaky when I hit bumpy spots. I have been trying to get it on youtube, but haven't had much luck. I'll try again today.

On another note. I now have 2 fried batteries. I went on a long ride yesterday. I never hit the LVC an was watching my voltage. I should have had plenty left to be safe when I got back. Anyway, I went to balance charge the pack and one set of batteries had a cell that was about 0.2v out. I thought, no big deal it was like that when I got it and it came right after a couple of charge cycles. Left the charger to it and away it went. When the rest of the cells reached 4.2v or so, the low cell started to drop in voltage. I took it off the charger and left it for the night. this morning I pulled the packs out of the tubes and checked each battery individually. The low cell was now at 0.79v and the same when I checked the battery it was paralleled with. They don't look puffed or anything, they just each have a cell at 0.79v. The charger won't charge them because it thinks a cell is missing.

It is the battery that was out of balance when I got it. It finally went bad and took a good one with it. I am guessing there is no way to get either of them back to life now. My other 2 batteries are fine and perfectly in balance. I may run at 22.2v for a while while I wait for new batteries form HK.

Clay

I finally got the video from the chest mount loaded. It is a bit shakier than the last one, but gives a much better idea of the actual sound of the bike. As said before, it is almost all motor noise and no chain noise.

Other than that, just waiting for HK to restock the zippy 5800 batteries to replace my shot ones. Also, ordering up a hyperion 1420i so I can balance charge the whole pack.

Here's the video.

It's been pretty quite while I have been waiting for new batts. No news on them yet. I am getting anxious as I want to get back to commuting on the bike instead of driving my truck. The good news is I got my Hyperion 1420i today. I am excited to set it up and use it. That is about it. Back to waiting for HK.

Clay

Very interested in the Hyperion, can you describe the easiest way to set it up for a 12S3P pack?

Whiplash,

Gary (GGoodrum) has a great post about the hyperion 1420i.

Just set up the output wires of my 1420i with andersons and gave it a go just to see if it works. All good. I just need a couple of longer balance wires to reach the bike. I would love to go with a single plug option, but I have an LVC in each tube and the balance wires are underneath the caps. To put them together, I would have to run them out of the tubes and leave them dangling somewhere. I like the clean look I have, so for now I will leave it as is. (Maybe this is the the time to redo my battery enclosure while I wait for batteries.)

I hooked the batteries I have up and went for a very short ride at 25v. :( It was pathetic. The 600w motor had some grunt at 25v, but it just isn't enough for this 1000w one. Oh well, I'll just be waiting now.

Clay

Batteries have finally hit the HK warehouse!!!! That means another week or so and I'll be up and running agian! I can't wait to have the bike running again, even if it is getting colder here.

So, while the bike was down and I was perusing Kim's 2 speed HOBO thread I came up with a new way to mount my batteries. It should work with any bike with a straight top tube or a Y frame bike, full sus or hard tail. I am still working out a few details, but I will be getting one fabed up soon. It will hold up to 8 x 6s lipo's from 5000mah to 8000mah and link them in any configuration easily with bus bars, like Kim's. It should also provide a mount for a CA or watt meter and most controllers either RC or otherwise. Of course there will be some "assembly required" for different controllers. With some developing it could have motor mounts added to it for varying motors. The cover will be rather user specific as well and could be shaped to cover all sorts of configurations and made out of all sorts of materials. Sounds too good to be true even to me, lol.

I'm not sure if I am looking to produce and sell them, but like my motor mount I want my battery bracket to be easily moved to another bike. It also seems that battery mounts are one of the last major missing links for ebike conversion.

Here is CAD of what I have so far.

It will attach at the back to either the seat tube (on the frame) or the seat post. The front, I am thing a clamp on the top tube, but haven't sorted the details. It will hang on each side of the bike like hard saddle bags. The batteries placed vertically on each side. The bus bars will run along the top plate above the top tube. The CA/watt meter mount will be at the very front behind the head tube. The cover could be made from aluminum, fiber glass, carbon fiber, or, well... anything really. It could be shaped in a variety of shapes to cover the batteries and wiring, and the motor and reduction of you want (depending on the mounting location).

Guess I have to make one now that I have posted it here.

Batteries finally came in!!!! They are balance charging as I type. I should be able to get them all set up and be riding the bike again tomorrow!! Can't wait to be commuting on it again.

I'll also get a quote on my new battery rack and see about getting it made up.

WoooHoooo...and.... WHAT?!?#?%?!@> You got bike lights KiWi :p
good too hear your lipOed up...i just finished 'redoing' my battery 'rack'
half hour ago ...hint: it's no longer made from alumnium
but its MUCH MUCH lighter and stronger than before :p

KiM

Hey Kim,

Not sure what you mean about the lights, but yes I do have them. It is getting dark earlier here, so I will need lights to get home.
Why am I not surprised your battery rack is no longer aluminium? Let me guess it is black and grey tartan? LOL I look forward to seeing it.

When I get my new rack made up, I will get another 4 boxes of lipo and double my range. If I can find some CF at a reasonable price, I might go with it also for the cover. But... Most likely not as it will be beyond my expenses.

So... The big question, does the bike run again? Yup, sure does. All good with 50v hot off the charger and the wheel spins from the motor. I'll on the bike again tomorrow. I'm excited to use my new 1420i charger as well to do a bulk balance charge.

Later...

Yes, I would like to see your final setup with the new charger as well! I want to do a 12s balance/bulk charge with it for mine...

At the moment it is nothing special. Just the balance leads from two of Gary's LVC's plugged into the charger and the battery mains plugged in to the charger output. Check out Gary's site, tppacks.com for a slick one plug charging set up with the 1420i. After I make my new battery rack, I'll go with either that, or something very similar. I am shooting for a set up very close to Kim's HOBO, as far as battery arrangement, wiring, and charging. Only it will fit on a standard mt bike and not just in the frame of a huge cruiser.

haha i have been bitten by the CF bug LoVE the stuff soooooo easy to work with (albeit freakin dusty) cuts like
a hot knife through butter and sands down nearly as easy as acryliuc perspex...waaay easier
to shape than alumnium, and of course VERY VERY easy to make mistakes because of it, i'm cutting a good
3-4mm the outer side of the line when cutting and then sanding to the line unlike alumnium, where ill run the first
cut a blades width from the line, one slip with CF would be an EXPENSIVE mistake... LoL

No such thing i'm afraid haha it's pricey stuff, I bought a BiG 2mm(thick) sheet from from Mr Recumpence SiR he hooked me up good  But yes, its not cheap compared to ali, its soooo freakin light though and strong :-| i tells ya Monkey mahn, i had like a 2cm wide x 10cm long strip of off cut laying on the table the other day, i picked it up flexed it, then handed it too my mate and said try break this, "Your joking right?" nope i said "I could break it myself but i would have to use such force i would like piece myself with the pieces when it did break so i gave it too you to try instead...!" after he hit me
in the arm and called me a c**t, LoL he tried breaking it, he eventually did but was absolutely amazed at the effort needed to break such a small skinny piece of CF, it's amazing stuff.

How simple a setup is it right! I'm loving pluggin straight in and hitting a few buttons on the charger then walkin away till i hears the beep, the cells in my packs are amazingly well balanced as a result... I think you will enjoy the 1420i Monkey man

Great to hear the bike is 'chirpin'" with the extra LiPO .. look forward to more video, some tire smokin' would be great!
Or some MoNOOOOO's :p

Haha, It was real late when I read that. So true though, but bed was calling, so no night trip.

Yeah, CF is awesome stuff. I would love to do all my mounts with it. It would keep the bike nice and light, and be super cool. But the cost is beyond the budget for sure.

The bike went great today. No trouble at all. I need to get another balance lead to get the charger all sorted to bulk charge. The one plug set up is definitely in the near future for me. I like simple and as idiot proof as possible.

Give me some time and I'll get some more vid. Don't know about tire smoking... I think the motor would smoke again first. Moonooo's on the other had... I need to work on them before there is any vid. I'll get some ride video soon though.
