Hoverboard batteries are lithium and cheap. Mmmmm

Interesting. Looks like the ones on eBay are 10S2P of either Samsung 22P or LG MF1 cells. This is 36V 4.4Ah, which at $50/pack is about 32 cents/Wh. I may get 4 and build a 72V 8.8Ah pack for fun.

FWIW, I've found most of the bare cell deals online (gearbest, fasttech) fall somewhere in the 30-40 cents/Wh range, so this appears to be a great deal for a ready-to-go 18650 pack.

Hoverboards have been banned from entering the NYC subway, due to fire risk. You cant even carry it into the station.

Maybe so, but I don't think it really matters here. We're talking about using just the replacement batteries on their own to make ebike packs.

Alright, I couldn't resist so I just bought 4 of the Samsung ones. I'll report back whatever I can when they arrive in 2-3 weeks.

Hoverboard batteries are 36v 5ah. Put 3 in parallel and you got something nice. They are $50 a piece on ebay.
Maybe a link?

Dan

Here's one I found when searching http://www.ebay.com/itm/391433696287?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

On the other hand, it might be worth the extra 60 bucks or so, to just get this.

More convenient to carry on a rear rack, comes with protective box, etc.

Just sayin, it's not the only cheap 36v pack out there. But if you could get three hoverboard packs for 100 bucks, Now you're talking a really good price. I've wondered if perhaps by this summer, somebody would be seriously stuck with a shitload of hoverboard packs.

Got the first of the 4 hoverboard batteries (claiming 36V 4.4Ah) from eBay in the mail last night. On the outside they claim to be Samsung 22P cells... they are not. They are orange Chinese cells claiming 2000 mAh per cell on the wrapper. I will disassemble and test each cell (capacity and AC 1kHz IR) for fun.

Um, its the cheap knock-off batteries that are bursting into flames. I wouldn't stick a bike-pack made out of them between my legs.

I bought them specifically to see what cells they actually had and if they were indeed legitimate replacement packs or not. They turned out to be fake, which I agree is not much of a surprise, but now we know.

I was simply assuming that there must be some hoverboards out there with legitimate cells. If one got legitimate replacement packs for one of those, they could make a decent enough battery. Alas, this offering was not legitimate.

End of story.
