hey guys i just got this 24" wheel with a hub motor on and it came with a single speed freewheel. However it seems like it is impossible to take off!

Normally a freewheel has these grooves where u can stick your freewheel remover tool in so u can unscrew it off the thread.

However this freewheel is threaded onto the hub motor but there is no groves to stick any remover tool in!

my freewheel looks like this. However without the groves (circled in red). However i tried turning the two holes (circled green) it just made the freewheel tighter on the gears. But it wasnt unscrewing at all, so its seperate from the thread.

Im taking this freewheel off because the hub motor is too wide to even fit in my frame, so if i can take this freewheel out i can just use the motor by itself without the chain and pedalling.

So any idea guys???

thanks in advance!

Yeah, I had one of those types. Turned it into a belt buckle instead of rebuilding it a second time.

By unscrewing the outer cover plate you can remove the cog wheel, pawls, springs, bearings etc until you're left with only the body attached to the hub.
That can be gotten off with a pipe wrench or vise or channel locks or other crude tool if you're not fussy about saving and rebuilding it.

Yeah, +1 to what what Zoot Kat said. While they sell freewheel removers that fit into the two slots in the middle, but my experience with them has not been very conclusive. As in, I ended up taking it apart and using a vice to get the middle off. For what it's worth may as well yourself the trouble and remove it destructively.

Edit: Just now had an IM conversation with a buddy about this, seems for these you have to put the freewheel remover on and then put the axle nut back on so it won't pop off. So it may be worth a try after all.

thanks guys.

Problem solved. thanks for the help.

i didnt remove the freewheel. I got the frame to expand a bit and placed the motor in nicely. Everything fits.

yeh i was going to do wat Zoot said however theres a bit of metal that jammed the thread up so i couldnt unscrew it any further so i guess im stuck with that single freewheel.
