Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

Success!
As per the end of the clip, it's a difficult little bigger to catch and takes on a mind of its own

I'm rockin my labcoat in this video for something different :p

aaaaaand the ride :)

I kinda forgot myself when riding back and must have very narrowly missed some pedestrians and sign posts
When the camera isnt right in front of you you have no idea where it is.
I tell ya what, if you're the attention seeking type, go for a ride in public and see how many people DON'T turn around and stare at you

Greg, Knoxie, you want a shot at the title ? Step up ladies  :p

talk about stealth...

when i just stick it on top of the helmet, everyone rubbernecks. i can only imagine what your whirly gig does!

the white lab coat is perfect tho. on the path your heading, the next one might look like this.

it is actually very cool. very watchable, though can't help feeling a bit nervous for ya...

it's even spinning already! :D

heh thanks mate. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Now I've just got to get it home from work so I can use it in the bush. I don't think I'd like to try and ride all the way home with it on, even out side of peak hour! Maybe I can tape it into the rear position for the ride ?
I think if I did clip something it wouldn't be the end of the world, apart from possibly damaging the camera the whole thing would just spin around.

Speaking of hitting something I very nearly took out an old lady that was blindly crossing the road on the way in today. Like your video of that ped you nearly hit you can madly hear me yelling at her to look out. Without even looking up she shuffles faster across the road, right under me.

WELL DONE! Nice 3D view and you need more balance and watch out for the obstacle that would hit someone or pull your head off.

I like it very much!

Looks great, i love the bit where you take the corner and the cam swings beautifully in sync as you go round, and also the attepted catch in the test vid
Cant wait to see the off road footage when you get chance, i can only see that being met, with....cable cam lol

Hyena ftw

D

Thats so cool!! shall I start the lets buy Hyena a new gopro fund now before the inevitable ? :p  brilliant mate, yes been out and did a 5 min video blog, will post it later, not as exiting as yours mind  but still a nice test of the camera and mount, they are amazing cams arent they, so pleased, the contour HD also looks good apart from it produces .mov files (urgghh) and the video looks like the lens is wearing a pair of sunglasses  well compared to the nice bright footage from the Gopro.

Well need to get thinking how I can play your game them Jay, I have some pretty fun ideas  check the video section later for my latest video later its encoding as I type this.

haha next time I smash a gopro I think my hospital bills will be more of a concern :p

Thanks for the comments fellas. I just recorded some more footage when ducking out for lunch, more looks from the public like I'd just escaped from the psych ward

The camera still seems to favour hanging to the back for some reason. Maybe it's the camera itself catching the wind and acting like a sail ? surely the effect would be very slight but as soon as I stop moving fast it starts spinning more freely when when I brake almost to a stop the camera comes back around to face me. I dunno, I'll play with it some more tomorrow. But I want to use the child and wife free hour I have in the afternoon to play with the cable cam mount.

I won't bother posting todays footage as it's basically the same as yesterdays. I might save a few seconds for the uncoming highlight reel / Hyena Industries showcase vid :)

yeah its most definitely wind resistance, but i like how it works now, we can see where you are going and you can swing it around with the brakes, just need a little practice with it i think.
if you want to change it, cut a little bit of weight off the balance end, when you want to swing it around just tilt your head down.
itll raise the gopro and now that it is heavier gravity should swing the gopro down
probably not too good for your neck tho.

maby a back/shoulder mount and control the swing by leaning to the handlebars

Hi Jay, great vids! :D I had an idea for your mount. If you had a crude pully on the main bearing and another on the gopro mount, you could wrap the pulleys around with some string to act as a belt so that (if the pulleys were 1:1) the camera always pointed forwards (or backwards) while it rotated around your head. It might lead to some pretty zany effects if you altered the ratio, crossed the belt etc  :? .

Yeah it car be hard on my neck at certain angles. I think part of the problem is the swivel isn't mounted exactly at the top/flat part of the helmet. I placed it estimated on roughly where the centre of the top would be but if your head is tilted up or down depending on the terrain the camera is then fighting against gravity. Any elaborate horizontal counter balances I put on it tend to go out the window when gravity is pulling it to the back of your head.

Sounds like an extra way to be decapitated

I went for a ride this arvo. It was almost dark so the footage isnt the best but it worked ok. Against my better judgement I went on some twisty single track :p It wont be too spectacular because i was riding pretty slow, trying to keep the camera either directly in front or behind but it was ok. And best of all I only hit the camera on trees/bushes 3 times

I edited a clip from my commute the other day that I mentioned where I nearly ran over an old lady but youtube is down apparently so I'll up it later

youtube is back, here's the clip
Silly old bat. How does one live long enough to become a senior citizen with road crossing awareness like this...

I'll edit some of todays footage tomorrow if I get time. Hopefully my crude cable cam works tomorrow, otherwise I'll make a proper one with a few pulleys

LOL stupid jaywalker just like happened today I went 39mph and this young kid MTB didnt see me coming so fast. Close call bash him with my shoulder and I was prepared act like football shoulder when it comes impact. I guaranteed this kid would throw out his MTB for sure. It was like 1 inch apart from my shoulder to this stupid jaywalker kid with mountain bike.

Obviously, My ebike is invisible due dark colors + my work clothes army pant and black coolmax t-shirt.

I gotta buy cheap flasher light + maybe 12v air horn? any recommend even I don't wear any protection I.E. helmet at all

Yeah I'd be making a helmet your first purchase!

So, what was supposed to be a good afternoon shooting footage with my 360 mount and mark 1 cable cam didn't quite eventuate.
The 360 mount and plenty of spare time I had did enable me to make a video blog style clip, which is something a bit different I suppose. You wanted annotation knoxie, you got it :)

The video tells the story.

Unexpected drift that nearly brought me unstuck at 7:10!

hahahaha on a positive note the camera mount worked well  .....

Kim...

Totally awesome. I can't believe how well the camera works. Can you control it with your head position? Looked unbelievably natural. I'm surprised how quickly you came to the conclusion to ride out. I probably would have sat down to think that one out. Guess there wasn't much of a choice. Only would have been better if you were being chased by enemies, hunted by predators or happen onto deadly wildlife. The commentary was great. Curious to see more of the rim later.

Yeah it's pretty sweet. After a few trial runs with different gear the final version only took me an hour to make and after some quick tweeking the results are pretty cool.
The control isn't perfect but if it's hanging to the back, which it favours then you can just grab the front and spin it back to you to show your face. Because the counter balanced side is shorter than the camera boom it's in easy reach at the top front of your helmet.

Yeah having been stranded in the bush before and had a long slog home I didn't want a repeat. It took about 5 seconds to make the decision then I decided I may as well film it so I still had something to show for my afternoons filming :)

Only would have been better if you were being chased by enemies, hunted by predators or happen onto deadly wildlife.
Actually I got chased by a dog earlier in the day. I'd just broken another 2 spokes and was stopped then this dog came out of no where. I took off and then saw his owner but the dog kept chasing me. Unfortunately the camera wasn't perfectly positioned to show the dog giving chase but you catch a glipse of him and can hear him barking the whole time. I'll edit and post that later.

Curious to see more of the rim later.

I stuffed up the title some how, I cut a segment out and it shifted the text on me - that was supposed to be right at the end when I spun the wheel. It was surprisingly still pretty good considering I rode all that way home on it and it was missing a few spokes.
I wouldn't trust the tyre at speed anymore after rolling the sidewalls along the road for 5ks but I put another tube back on it so I could properly dispose of the remaining tread on the tyre
The battery was 3/4 flat so fairly down on power but it managed to spin the wheel enough to do the job. I only gave it 30 seconds worth as the motor was pulling a constant 60 amps and didn't want to risk melting anything. Thats the secret to longevity with these motors. Sure, they'll take 5kw like a charm but abuse them and keep it up and they'll let go.

Hehe, too funny dude. :D :D :D

Been there, done that, too many times myself. The slime I use works great, but once you let a tire get a bit low, the 20-100 inch long thorns in the tube start poking through the other side of the tube. Even with a pump handy, it can be a long way back since slime only works well on the tread side of the tube.

The cam mount is outstanding, but I bet you do look pretty loony riding with it. :D Well worth a few stares, the POV is really awesome.

She's not to blame, she may not hear or see too well and a quiet speeding bike comes up from nowhere

She crossed the road just after a bend without even looking. If I had on been on a motorbike or in a mack truck she wouldn't have seen me, and I wasn't speeding. Fast for a pushy, yes, but not for any other vehicle that would otherwise be coming around that bend.
Most people who stroll across the road towards oncoming traffic stop in the middle of the road if something is coming (I do this myself) but I don't look once when step off the gutter and assume nothing will come along in the mean time, especially on a bend.

Yeah it's kinda a PITA to ride with, I can't go for a hard or enjoyable ride with it as I'm always watching where the boom is so I dont collect it on a tree or branch (as often... ) but it's worth it I guess for footage collecting missions. With it fixed out in front it's not so bad. I had it like that for the first shot in the clip, just sticky taped down to stop it swinging around. The give in the tape allowed it to move about 20 degrees which actually worked out well as it gave a little movement but kept it front on.

Aaaaand here's the ceremonial funeral of the tyre.
The burnout isn't too impressive, and the end I found that the contact patch that it was smoking up was only around 10mm wide. Good for low rolling resistance but no good for burnouts! Oh well. Out of interest I counted the holes in the tube (patched each one temporarily with a square of duct tape - 13 punctures.

Lol.. nice..

Been there, done that, when stuck far from home base, it's all sacrificial as long as it gets you home.. hehe..

I"ve had this happen ( rear tire flat ) on a bike with the hub motor on the front, leaned way forward to reduce weight on the rear as much as possible and motored home, rear tire flopping around wore a good groove on the bike frame but i got home !

Yes but an electric bike is small and quiet and she may have some impairment, just think you should care for elderly too
