ICE frame 50CC dirt bike conversion

The current incarnation of the motor.

They should have a bike that size around here for me to build on. I'm stuck looking at tiny Chinese bike no bigger than the Raxor MX650

Thanks for the link I have found it hard to dig up these types of motors on the net, what struck me is I can't see a performance chart based on Nm torque, I thought HP and watts the motor is eating is somewhat unhelpful baloney and the undisputed lord and master of motor performance is Newton-meter torque?

I like the crank jackshaft setup. Interested to see how it turns out.

Very cool build! That looks like the perfect frame for a build like this. Most of the small cc motorcycles I have seen are pit frames. Yours looks way easier to work with. Just curious, how do the pedals interface with the shaft?

Hi thanks for the comments. The bike was road legal, same sort of size as larger dirt bikes. The jack shaft is for set up at the moment, the pedals are tapered square drive. For the time being I machined a square on the shaft then filed the taper, however once I know where everything goes, I get one of the cad guys at work to model it for me and get a local machine shop to make the finished shaft out of stainless. The taper is particularly difficult to machine at home, even if I do have more facilities that most.

I hear you there. That's why I wondered.

So the pedals are just there because you wanted them right? They wont make it a legal e-bicycle?

The aim is to pull the wool over the eyes of the fuzz. In the UK (at the moment) the law states that it is legal to have pedal assist with no greater than 250w of power and also no faster than 15.5mph. Clearly this is far greater than that, but without pedals you have no chance; it is a motorcycle. I hope to slow to less than 15mph and pedal if there is any unwanted attention. There is no frame number, as I ground that off. Innocent until proven guilty, and this just makes it harder to proof. Police round here have little knowledge of EV law, so understanding more than them can help you in sidelining the law, or at least that's the plan

Well played. Just keep the sidewalk wheelies to a minimum as to not draw attention. Just last weekend I took a mean fall going way to fast in the rain. A motorist stopped to help me pick up my bike and scattered debris. Just as I got up I noticed his car was blocking a police car who was watching the whole spectacle. I made sure to pedal away under human power with the cycle analyst screen turned off to look as bicycle like as possible. Most police around here don't notice ebikes or know anything about the laws either, but pulling a stuntman move in an intersection at 3am is a great way to get them to start asking questions.

I suppose if you had a switch to limit your power and speed you would only be guilty of riding a very heavy bicycle.

Unfortunately, an on-road/off-road switch is apparently not legal in the UK :(

Homeshop, it's a great project but I'd prepare for plenty of awkward roadside conversations. That thing will draw attention, much like those chinese ebike scooters do: Looks like an ICE bike, no helmet, no plates = tug! Bear in mind the old school 50cc mopeds that had pedals.
