jonescg's NEW electric racebike BUILD thread!

Frock, hate to say it in both respects, cops checked the hospitals?

No other incidents, so there was no doubt an accomplice waiting around the corner. Man, I was clearly too keen for a sale I missed all the warning signs :(

Well the cops have a good line of enquiry, and the van has been seized. Hopefully will have the bike back soon.

Did you look at the registration of the van yourself? I've hunted down a bike thief or two when the cops wouldn't do anything.
That really sucks bro.

Chris, I feel your pair. I'm speechless.

Rod

Please stop feeling my pair

Yeah Jay, I am keeping an eye out for parts on Gumtree, Ebay, Quokka and all the other free classifieds. The cops said the owner of the van matched my description of the guy, and suggested I not interact with him as he's "not a very nice person".

I really needed to sell that bike - I should have accepted the $5000 offer I had earlier :(

Damn, sorry to hear about that Chris. Good luck with recovering the bike. I guess that will slow progress on your build a bit. :(

Apologies for the following advice after the fact, but someone else may benefit from this:
I took a bike for a test ride a few weeks back, and the guy just snapped a photo of my drivers licence with his phone before he handed the keys over. I thought it was a pretty neat idea - get their photo, address etc. Mind you that was only a shitty old Kawasaki Ninja 250.

OK, so still no word on the GSXR1000. I hope to do some baiting on the weekend and see where I get.

On the e-moto front, I can finally say I OWN AN EVO AFM-140!

Woo HOO!

It's still in England though. 700 quid to fly it here, or roughly AUD$1150. That can wait till next fortnight since it wouldn't stretch this far. Can't wait to look at it, in all it's stationary glory. You reckon an ebike controller might turn it over? :D

That's good to hear some good news after some terrible news! Karma man, it will come back to pay you in the end.

That motor is GORGEOUS!

So I didn't win my ARC grant, which means as of this Friday, I will be unemployed. The life academic, is over.

This means the bike will still get finished, but not as fast as I'd hoped.

A good month off before looking for a new job... Could be worse.

Cheers all,
Chris

Welcome to the great unwashed! I've been unemployed for 4 months now (badly broken leg didn't help getting a new job)- on the hunt now!

I gave up on academia a loooong time ago as I didn't want to be dependant on grants and the whims of a professor... :)

No idea at this stage, Rodney. I think I will appreciate taking a few weeks off and relaxing, while finishing up the obligations I have to my PhD student - I want her to submit her thesis next March.

But I'm keen to try anything. Something which involves teamwork, a bit of brains and actually makes a difference in the world.

Enjoy the few weeks off. I am sure you will find work ok. I also hope you get your bike back soon.

Interesting series of events - my supervisor decided to retire, effective immediately. Bombshell!

So with my PhD student returning from Canada to a research group with no supervisors, the head of school decided to grant me an extra two weeks so I can ensure she is set up to submit her thesis on time. I suspect in these next two weeks they are trying to work out whether or not to keep me on so I can fill in for her duties (at a considerably cheaper rate) or get someone else to do it and save even more money. Times they be a changing.

So today wasn't my last day - the 23rd of November will be. I can't say I am feeling particularly productive right now...

At least I can make the final shipping transaction on my motor. I wonder if sending it by sea would be a cheaper option... Nah, I want to look at it now!

Yes interesting Chris. Did your supervisor give you any reason why he decided to retire so abruptly. You must have a lot of mixed emotions at the moment. Looking forward to next weeks ride. do you want a lift. I can pick you up in the van.

At least that way you won't need to ride conservatively and have a bit of fun on the ride. :)

She just had enough. She took 6 months long service leave to hang out in Michigan with her husband's family, and loved it enough that she bought a house over there and will do summer-summer. She was not having fun and was just not interested with it, so it was the right thing for her to do, I think. Not sure what my options will be, but my head of school is a tight-arse Dutchman, so chances are it wouldn't be anything long term.

As for the ride, I will just bring my charger with me. I got 20 km of fun riding, or 40 km of conservative riding. And the charger is pretty quick. ;)

What does ~$500 worth of big DC fuses look like?

I'm happy with their size as they will occupy a fair bit of room inside the box. The contactors are going to be bigger than these, so I know what room I have to work with.
