@Thud: How does this motor compare to an Astro 3220? They cost about the same. The only difference is the power (the golden has 4kw more power) and the HUGE difference in weight. About 2kg vs 17kg? How can it be the golden weighs about 9 times as much as the astro but only has about twice the power?

Yup rpm and thats part of why the astros fry so easy at low rpm.
 
No wheelies this time? Nice setup.
10 miles per tire could be an issue though. The battery probably lasts longer than that.

they compair like a red ryder BB gun to a .50 BMG (not at all :lol: )

If golden rated this motor in RC terms it would be a 40kw motor.

That golden will run a continuous 7kw without breaking a sweat. (loaded to 18kw input that motor is still showing 83% efficancy delivering 15kw to the output shaft)

Thats 3 times the deliverd power the best set up astro can deliver running at its ragged edge.

just a physical comparison should be enough to show the folly RC marketing #s are. I would be curious to know the exact %s of copper & magnetic energy in a straight up comparison between the 2.
 
After spending a number of hours dyno'ing various motors, i don't believe that 8 of the 3220 astros running at full tilt could do the same power this motor makes. (Just my own wild guess)

The other difference, is that this motor makes its power at an RPM that lets you just connect it with a chain the the rear wheel.
 
Your not water cooling that thing are you? I imagine the water cooled version could be Brutal... :!:

I have the WC version on a shelf.
This is brutal enough for me. We are only running at like 60% controller settings.

Combine these parts with hours of a Sevcon controller tuning experts time on a motorcycle dyno (thank you Ryan), and you're set.


I took it to lunch today, riding with a friend on his motorcycle. A motorcycle cop had somebody pulled over on the side of the road. I slowed down to 25'ish, and made a show of turning the pedals as we passed by. No trouble. :) For around town, I think it's faster than being on a superbike, and WAY more fun to be able to get in the bike lane or sidewalk whenever you like. I really enjoy it. It's just a nice comfortable, quiet, clean, and reliable machine, that has never left me disappointed in the acceleration department. It's fun to ride up stair cases as well, it's just effortless, you can just torque up them as slow or fast as you want, never worry about stalling or something. Nice to get great parking in bike racks too. :)

I think it's my favorite 2 wheel'd transportation option right now, and this is coming a guy with 4 motorcycles, including the best possible dirt machine and the meanest superbike.
 
Lol they wouldn't have a clue, they would think he was in a motorcycle! Lol!

or is that where the motor stays within a good temperature range and any more would cook it.

damn that thing is fast, pitty sevcons are hard to program, it would be the ultimate setup for a light dirt bike.

Yes there is, its Lukes race bike he used at both Laguna Seca and the last Grange race, he upped pics of its construction
when he was building it etc Few minor improvements on it but essentially same bike.

Some wheelie vids would be awesome though Luke! Any chance your mate can get some
front wheel off the ground power monos happening? or take the camera so you can? Its
what i am striving for in my next bike, current one juuuuust doesnt quite have the grunt
too lift the wheel on its own under hard acceleration.

I am pretty certain they grabbed an off the shelf rotary encoder for reading position. a quick google brings up several that could be employed with a little creativity:

No idea which brand or model is employed....or even if its a production pc or a modded one. These guys have acces to a wide range of specialty/odd ball motor controller stuff that we can only dream about & the ability to mod existing stuff to fit the bill.

Luke has a great team of inovators to tap for help on these things.
 
Two nice things about the sin/cos sensor:
  • It get the position sensing element out of the stator heat flux
  • It allows precise timing advance with the right controller just like a timing map in an IC ECM

Congrats on the quickest ebike on the planet!

I don't care much about top speed it's that quickness that I want up to say 50mph or so. What was the weight all up with your pilot in the video, and geared for what top speed, so I can figure out how much power I need to accelerate somewhere close to that quickly?

It sounds like you have it really dialed in now. Have you tried regen yet? Mild regen sure is sweet with a ride-around bike.

Not knowing much about the sevcon's I can only assume the controller has inputs for such sensors. For us with less access, there was discussion a while back on optical sensors to function as hall sensors. The whole point, is to move the heat sensitive stuff out of the motor and into an area that is less harsh. I believe Bertie had some success doing this. With the sine/cosines stuff the resolution is really good though.
