Thinking of off-the shelf bikes as well as kits: Bosch in particular. No bike is worth having for me, if you have to struggle to out-pedal a limiter on a downhill. And how many will kick-off at full power on a steep uphill within a quarter of a turn of the crank, standing on it?

Or is all this stuff I take for granted head shaking material for off-the-shelf commuters and bike dealers? Not interested in disabling such stuff - just what people are being sold as standard.

I think a better question you might ask yourself is "what specifically do I want my bike to do for me, and under what specific conditions on what specific terrain?"

If you provide all that information, we can probably help you find a system (or build one) that will do what you want.

This thread

has a number of good questions to think about the answers to, that you can then post here.

Otherwise you're really just going to have to read up on every single system that's out there to see what each one does, then decide if the systme does what you want or if the compromises you have to make with it are acceptable.
