Mongoose front derailleur can't be adjusted up or down -- and if removed it exposes holes in the BB

I bought new chainrings for a Mongoose fat bike, and the existing derailleur ("Shimano Alivio FD-M410E Hyperdrive") hits the middle cog when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Normally it should be possible to raise the height of the derailleur box, but I see no way to do this. The old chainrings were 22-30-40 and the new ones are 24-34-42, which I wouldn't expect to be a problem since the derailler has a max of 42t.

Is this a common problem or am I overlooking something? This is the right-hand side of the derailleur:

What seems to be a bit nasty about this problem is that removing the derailleur leaves a hole in the bottom bracket. And I'm not seeing any replacement derailleurs that attach to the bottom bracket. So it seems as if I'll be forced to cut the derailleur off with an angle grinder so that the holes can stay covered on the BB.
