I'm setting up my KMX Tornado e-trike and recently bought some items from Methods (great buying experience, btw). He sent me an HS3540 laced in a 20" rim and a 7-speed (11T) freewheel. I'd like to get a moped tire put on here for the extra durability. Will any moped tires fit this wheel? I messaged another member that has a Pirelli moped tire on his 20" wheel, but he mentioned he thinks you need at least 1.5" flat space on the wheel. Is this correct? Is this true for all moped wheels? I'll measure mine again at lunch today, but I think I measured it at about 1" flat space.
Thanks,
Ryan

Nobody has been in a similar situation in the past? I'd think this was a fairly common situation since this is the standard wheel that comes with a Crystalyte HS3540 and moped tires are getting pretty popular with ebikes. Any input is appreciated!

I put some Pirelli 16" by 2.5" moto tires on the Recumpense 406mm x 47mm rims. Search my posts I have pix. Try fit real well, went on with hands/ bicycle tire irons only

Yes that's right. And I'm not sure whether these tires get much thinner than 2.5" in width, or how much thinner of a rim this tire will fit on. In the next week or so I can do a test fit and take pix, as this weekend I'm un-building my front 406mm/pirelli wheel, and I have a narrower 406mm rim laying around. Let me know if you're interested in that.

this is a Pirelli 16" scooter tire mounted to a 20" rim. these rims are 45 or 47mm, i can't remember. they used to be stock on the Zero electric motorcycle back when they used 16" wheels.

but the tire needs to be on a much wider rim than what you have. on a narrow rim the tire is distorted ad the bead will not grip or seat on the rim properly. the tire will come off of the rim easily in corners.

recumpence may have some suitable rims. also ypedal may have some more of those Zero rims.

407mm X 47mm (20-inch rims X 1.8"), with Pirelli 16 X 2.50

The widest common BMX 20-inch rim is 2.125-inch / 54mm wide, 2.0-inches is 51mm, and 1.75-inches is 45mm

Shinko SR714__16" x 2.25,

ContiGo______16" x 2.25",

Pirelli ML75___16" x 2.50",

Pirelli ML75___16" X 2.75", this wide of tire fits well on a 1.85-inch / 47mm wide rim.

What I'm using is Shinko 16x2.25 R714. I used to have a pair of 2.5" Pirelli ML-75's, pictured below. In the picture, they're mounted to the same "20 inch" (406mm) BMX rims I'm using now. So, I'm presently using a different brand of tire, but both the Shinko and the Pirelli are 16" moto (moped, scooter, etc.) tires and therefore fit the 406mm "20 inch" BMX rims like they were made for each other.

The "Urban Assault-Illegal in all 50 states" bike from Kinaye Motorsports uses a Hutchinson GP1 17" x 2.25", outside diameter is 21.5". The rim he chose is a 17" moped (Motorcycle) rim, 17" x 1.6"

Sorry to bump an old thread, but this is a good list here..

16" in motorcycle/scooter/moped terms is actually a 20" tire in bicycle terms.
So any of these 16" will fit on a 20" bmx rim, given that it is wide/deep enough.

I've had a 2.75" wide pirelli on my magic pie race bike, it was totally overkill. I'd stick with 2.5" or 2.25" instead.

Oh btw these tires are so thick that they have excellent puncture resistance. They feel super solid and all that rubber really helps soak up the vibrations from the road. Highly recommended if you have a bike that can accept 20" wheels :)

really interesting.. i wonder if a 21"x3" or 90x90/21 very common motorcycle front tire fits and MTB frame. Measured 68cm in dia for both my 26" mtb tire and my 90x90/21 Suzuki DR650 front tire :? it is 85mm wide, should almost fit... The spokes are much thicker (4mm?) but the wheel itself should fit. I have all parts here to test, when i have time i will try that. The axle dia sadly is a bit different, otherwise I could go for a test ride

I'm using 21" x 3" motorcycle tires on my A-Line. Using bicycle hubs front and rear. So I use bicycle spokes, as not to rip the flanges off the hubs. The magic that lets all this happen is to stack a few washers on the spoke nipples, otherwise they'll fall right through the holes on the moto rims... See here:

treatland has a lot of skinny moped tires for reasonable prices.

Nice to see this was already done. Thx matty! The bigger Hubmotors like Clyte use 3mm spokes, this might be a good combo since the washers dont have to fill a lot of room.

Have to tighten some spokes on my Motorcycle front wheel anyway, so I have the chance to check frame clearance at the same time. 3" seems to be quite wide for an MTB tire. I wonder which frame fits these. Googled a lot, but always end up with non-suspended sandbike/fatbike frames  I'll post here if I find any fully frame that fits the 3"x21" tires

I have that same rim, from Ypedal, and am looking to put that tire on there. Which exact tire is it you have on there? That way I can be sure it'll fit on mine, for CrazyBike2's rear wheel. :)

(EDIT: found this model number "Pirelli ML75 (2.75-16 46J REINF)" in one of your posts elsewhere in the forum about that wheel/rim, just want to be sure that's the right one before I go find and order one).

(been trying to find one locally so I could physically take the rim down and make *sure* it'd fit before buying, but can't get people to answer the phone, or not just hang up on me or put me on eternal hold. If I know exactly which one to order, I can get one online very easily, and not have to worry about it being the wrong size and unusable)

i know this is probably slightly off topic but a good alternative to a moped or motorcycle tire on a bike rim would just be to get a motorcycle rim. ive seen this link floating around (i think gc in dc and moonshine both bought their rims from here). pretty good deal considering you can hardly get a quality bike rim for that price. although the tradeoff for strength and duribility is obviously weight. gonna need a high powered hub like a cro motor to make something like this worth it.

this link happens to be the listing for the red rim...if you are interested in other colors i believe he has the same rim in all the colors pictured - just search his store.
