I've been googling left and right for a small and simple idler sprocket with a bearing for a 3/8" or even 1/4" shaft. The left side of my bike has been using a drag idler for the longest time... it's noisy and I know it's knocking my efficiency down quite a lot.
I could press a bushing from the home-improvement place into one of those sprockets off the scooter part sites but I want to avoid the drag of a bushing.

Does anyone know of a source? I would prefer to avoid the big companies and am just trying to find a website that sells one-off parts like that for cheap. Like I know of martin and other huge companies. Just want a supplier to get this little b@$tard part from

Thanks!

hey dequinox, I just got a #25 idler in the mail a couple days ago. I got it from mcmaster carr I think it was $20
I'm not even sure if I need it, but I won't know for a week or 2. I want to try w/o the idler, but if the chain tends to slip off the sprocket I'm going to use the idler with a spring arm.
if I don't need it I'd sell it to you for $10, but if you want one right away then try mcmaster :D

They're never cheap, but they are always built to last. http://www.terracycle.com The usual disclaimer that I have nothing to do with the company, other than using their stuff.

Ok thanks that gives me somewhere to start, and I'll be looking forward to seeing how your build works out mud. Let me know when you get 'er working. :D

And that terracycle website has idlers only for bike chain...I'm looking for an idler for No.25, or 1/4" pitch chain. It is smaller.

like this?

Yes, mud pointed me to that one and I may order it soon. I am on a tight living budget at the moment so I have to be extra careful about purchasing stuff I don't "need".

Thanks :)

The only source I have for them is exercycles. :) I used one off of an exercycle for the sprocket in a contraption I made for the intermediate reduction on the original CrazyBike2 drivetrain.

If you want to look for one, the exercycle was the type with pedals and the rowing arms, and a fan for the load wheel. Don't remember who made it, but several I have seen used basically the same part.

This is the sprocket, showing it's internal bearings.

This is how it was on the original exercycle loadwheel axle and stuff (with the socket shown above slid over it to test fit)

Then the contraption I built to accept the receiver pulley for the treadmill motor, using the freewheel half of a rear bike hub, welded to the end of the socket, which the sprocket's hex end then slipped into:

The whole thing bolts into the middle dropouts of the original CrazyBike2 frame.

You can make one of your own by carving up a inline skate wheel.

ypedal shows how to do it on his website. look about halfway down the folowing page.

definitetly low budget. you can use old wheels from skates you get at Salvation Army or othe charity thrift shops.

There's an idea! I think I will use the inline skate wheel...at least for the #25 chain side. Thanks!

Amberwolf - I haven't seen any exercycles in the junkyard here but I will keep an eye out.

Check out your local Craigslist free section and Freecyle.org and I bet you'll find some listed every month. Lots of people give up on exercise programs, either because they're too hard to keep up on, or don't work for them as fast as they want. Then they keep the stuff in the garage a few years and someone else in the household wants it all gone.

It's how I get most of my stuff. I haven't collected any more exercycles, though, as I don't need more parts from them right now. If I had them I'd probably think of ways to use them, but I only have so much yard I can use up for stuff before the dogs get pissed off that they don't have anywhere to run around in.
