Post Your Electric Longboard or Electric Mountainboard Build

Here's my first try on an electric longboard. It's a fairly standard build for now.

Once I get this going reliably and get all the mechanical issues worked out I want to change the configuration to this:

The roads here in Maine are less than smooth and resulted in some scraping.
So I added some wedges to help change the motor angle.

Hey TurboTwister, what are you using for housing? Looks like you found a nice solution for easy access :)
Furp, I like your housing too. What did you use?
 
I used folded aluminum 1mm thick I think. The joints where the piece meets to make a closed square are filed down a little and glued with epoxy. Inside is a sheet of ventilation covering (i think) with lots of cuts in it holding velcro holding the electronics.

I misjudged the concave a bit, so there is a slight gap between the edge of the battery enclosure and the board.

Everything is fastened with bolts going through the board and into a longnut inside the housing.
 
I used a parts organizer from home depot and cut out the organizers as needed. Cost me $4.50 and i grabbed two rolls of heavy duty outdoor mounting tape aswell.
I used the tape to mount it and the excess to create a waterproof gasket around the inside lip of the box.
For $10 worth of parts it came out pretty well and latches nicely and if I ever need another one it won't break the bank.

I think I may go the organizer route just for convenience of it being assembled. Found a couple that would fit 2x3s plus the ESC and receiver. My only concern is the latches breaking. I'll post these in the housing thread too.

What's up folks? My name is Matty and I live in Hawaii. I was motivated to build an e-Longboard by aches and pain. I've been skating for 30 years and all my joints are pretty wrecked. I still love to skate, but pushing around hurts my knees and hips. So I decided to build my geriatric board (that's what my wife calls it).

I started my build knowing absolutely nothing about RC. The folks on this forum were awesome. Here's a pictorial history of my build (with my original thread here: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=63301).

I started with an EMAD board that had dead batteries and a dead charger. I picked it up on the cheap with the intention of learning by tearing into something that I knew had worked at one time. I figured I wouldn't have to sweat the small stuff. As a side note, the EMAD board is a piece of junk. The deck is crappier than my old Nash Executioner or the boards they sell at Wal Mart. It didn't even have riser pads--just metal offsets. The electronics are totally low end. The DC motor is junk. It was a great way to learn, but I immediately want to upgrade everything to better components.

Then I picked up a really nice complete Sector 9 longboard for 30 bucks off a meth head in Waikiki. I was stoked to find out the bolt pattern on the EMAD trucks was the "old school" pattern. I had to drill 4 holes to get the trucks to fit, but they fit great. I was surprised by how well they turn. The wheels suck though. They're like shopping cart wheels. If you're used to urethane, these wheels are wack. But I've learned they do. not. slide. out. I can lean into a turn suuuuper hard and they stick. So there's that.

I tore everything off the old EMAD board, ordered batteries and a charger from Hobby King and some miscellaneous electronic bits and bobs from Amazon, and then I had to play the waiting game. Shipping to Hawaii takes sooooo long.

Once all my parts arrived, I got down to putting it all together. I rapid prototyped an initial build that worked. But the enclosure scraped the ground when I carved hard. And getting the batteries out of the enclosure to recharge them meant that I had to take off four bolts that were kind of a pain to remove. I wanted something with a lid and with a lower profile.

I don't know if I should... I'm scared of what might happen if it lands in the wrong hands lol. I am trying to bring by board to market. All I can say is its almost entirely composite material (carbon fiber and others), and very sleek! oh, and ultra high tech! I might be convinced to post it, but not till I talk to some investors.
 
That's one sexy board! :D What did you end up using for the enclosure, and what are the dimensions? My guess is 7" wide x 1" height?

Yeah, you got it spot on. It's 7" width and 1" height. Plan on putting a 10ah pack. I probably should of put a bottom enclosure + top cover. Looks good though can't wait to try the 15mm width belts.
 
beto_pty tested 42 mm I think. 35mm ones will most likely have too high kv and a to thin shaft to be robus enough.
 
5mm shaft is strong enough. I saw boosted boards motors and they look like 30 mil diameter. The high KV is also my concern. I think if you gear it properly it may work well.

How reliable is that ESC...? How many miles did you cover with it?
