I haven't yet built my first ebike but I'm curious about upgrade potential.

From what I understand the RC strategy requires more finesse and fabrication than the Cyclone kits. So for my first project I'm looking to keep it as simple as possible. But down the line I expect I'll follow many of your footsteps in desiring further modification and power.

Assuming I had a standard Cyclone 650W 3-chain kit installed and working perfectly, what would be required to replace the engine with an Astro 3210 or 8150?

I would not use the cyclone gear box, the gears are too narrow- teeth too small for a more powerful motor. Go with a unit from Matt S.

Hi,

I'd jump in on the group buy (8150's will probably be available also):

…Here is the scoop;

The 3210 is normally $400 plus $20 extra for black anodizing. However, if I buy 50 of them, I can sell you guys each a motor for $285 with black anodizing included at no extra charge!…

Drive unit discussed here (the motor has not reached production):

High power RC motor and drive unit production

If you go through the crank you will probably (depending on motor kv and voltage want to use a dual stage reduction unit like Ypedal:

Y-pedal's two stage RC drive..........

If you bypass the cranks you can eliminate the second stage as discussed here (for example):
