Saddle bags? Instead of Panniers?

It just dawned on me. Since weight with an ebike is not the biggest of issues, why can't I just use a set of motorcycle leather saddlebags off ebay for $50, instead those really expensive panniers for hauling my stuff to work. Also, those heavy duty cowhide bags, may be plenty strong enough for some batteries as well.

Anyone here use them, instead of panniers?

Aren't Saddle Bags the same thing as Panniers?

Those two names mean the same thing....

But the idea is good I think, rather than sticking the weight way up in the air in the back you bring it down low to where the bike actually rotates.

 Can anyone offer a single reason why this is NOT a better way to go than sticking weight up high?

Panniers can be up front too... no saddles there. :p

Good ones yes, cheap mail order ones, maybe yes maybe no. Leather is weird, and can have weak spots, especially in bargain stuff. The pricy bike stuff of nylon can blow out easy too. In either case, buying something you can inspect first is good. Realy good leather is totally bomproof, but a half hide of it is around 200 bucks. I'ts pretty easy to cut and punch stitching holes and fab your own. But the cost, ouch! I was using this stuff for protective corners on a hot air balloon basket. Pretty much gets bashed into something every flight. Good leather can be bought localy in just about any city, look for a saddle shop or shoe repair guy.

Thought these battery trays might give you some different ideas of whats possible. These boxes don't look like they would be all that hard to make. http://www.electricrider.com/crystalyte/battracks.htm Blessings, Snow Crow

Panniers are not saddle bags. http://www.carradice.co.uk/type.htm

When I saw "Saddle bags" I thought of Carradice and their classic Nelson or Camper long flap bags that hang from under your saddle.
They also have supports and quick release mounts.

I don't know why batteries wouldn't be good in this position right under your body's center of balance.

Save the space on your rack for hauling stuff.

I was considering a set of $50 leather motorcycle saddle bags off ebay. I've heard questionable quality of them thoguh.

However, all this is moot. I found an inexpensive set of panniers that will fit the bill perfectly. Bought and paid for.
