408 motor was getting a bit hard to turn, opened it up, found electrolysis had gone haywire in motor. Had used motor in rain and also on beach seems salt water had got inside ( probably when wheeling bike up a salt water creek).
Very suprised at the results of electroylsis, surprisingly motor was still running, have managed to clean it all up and working fine.
Seems many different metals in these motors and salt water will cause severe/rapid corrosion. Probably 4 to 6 weeks since bike was taken on beach ( only did once ). Bearings were fine, hall sensors all working but very hard to get off the deposits on magnets and rotor. Have put silicone spray in motor and will silicone up the cover plates and where wires exit motor ( plastic parts)

Yeah, with that much DC power I'm surprised it that didn't happen in the one day you were on the beach. It's amazing how fast DC current and some conducting liquid can eat through anything metal.

How well was this motor sealed? Was the wire outlet around the axle sealed? How deep was the water this was ridden through?

I ride mine in the rain, so this is a big concern to me.

the motor was never submerged in the water, I walked the bike along a creek on a beach only a couple of cm of water, but the water would have run down the spokes and somehow into the motor. Maybe 30m or so along the creek, but it was saltwater. Motor was standard as sent by crystayte I hadn't done anything to waterproof the motor. I think the salt must have played a big role in it, i'm quite amazed at the results after maybe 6 weeks later.
