After doing some reading about the ip67 rated direct drive motors by QS, it got me thinking. I don’t really ride in the rain, let alone submerging my bike in water, but I’m seeing these hubs as possibly providing additional cooling options, like the use of ATF or other liquid coolants. I know some folks have used ATF in geared hubs but I’m wondering how effective it is relative to Statorade, putting aside the leaking issues.
Statorade more or less stays in place because it sticks to the magnets, but I’m wondering how ATF works, since the stator is stationary, and the ATF would only reach the top of the stator in a DD motor from being splashed around, while the bottom may be submerged. Not sure if this would create uneven cooling.
Anyway, while I may not end up getting one of their motors, the fact that a hub motor can be successfully sealed opens up more possibilities that may eventually lead to a mod for other motors. I love my leaf hub, and it has more than enough power, but it would be even better with better cooling. Any thoughts on the preferred and most effective coolant, if sealing wasn’t an issue?

run the coolant loop thru the axle - wires on one end, water tubes on the other - and a little radiator on the side.

Cool. How effective was that at controlling the heat?

I'd be interested in seeing some tests on this.

I did read some nerdy stuff by Grin Technologies that insinuated it's impossible due to the expansion and contraction of metal to heat/cooling. It's hard for me to believe someone actually solved the problem.

Me too, but they needed to pass the certification, so it stayed waterproof enough during testing I guess. I haven’t found examples of it being used in a build, so no real world testing data.

I found a good definition for the IP65 rating:
What Does IP65 Mean? Dust-Tight & Water-Resistant Guide | IP65 ratings define enclosure protection: '6' means total dust-tight ingress protection; '5' protects against low-pressure water jets and spray from any angle.

This does not cover thermal expansion and contraction, which is the enemy of oil cooled setups i think.

My guess is that this means it's slightly better than the average hub motor.

For fluid, ATF is known to eat at certain types of plastics

A long time ago i pitched this to ES but got no takers. This stuff has very high materials compatibility and good thermal characteristics. Good candidate for a DD motor.
Oil cooling a motor with transformer oil/dielectric fluid - the next frontier?

I saw a review of a premade ebike they said was using oil for motor cooling. If I can find what bike it was will post a link.

The review I watched said that if you hold down the left blinker for 5 seconds, it switches to 20mph limited, class 2 throttle ebike mode.

Tough to believe that will fool the cops for long. Usually they pace me to check my speed and if I'm pedaling first before stopping me anyway. I have a motorcycle license so I'd prefer a road legal kit and registering it anyway.

Motor looks sweet, though. From their web site:

I couldn't find any similar motors for sale online. There's doc's custom water cooled one and a water cooled mid-drive from Golden Motor:

Maybe there's an electric dirt bike or motorcycle out there already with an oil cooled hub, though. I don't know much about that area. Had a coworker with a Zero electric motorcycle who loved it.

I haven’t looked into it and not the thread but can u make an “ebike” a legal motorcycle? I’d rather do that than constantly be creeping around on my new over-powered bike

Do they say who makes the motor seems like a lot of secrecy on new ebike technology.

Surron's, particularly, have ready to buy street legal kits with all the turn signals and stuff needed. No idea about a regular ebike. There's weird requirements like D.O.T. approved tires and a VIN/paperwork. So at the minimum you'd have to put motorcycle tires on.
