Securing Theft and Vandal Proofing ebike ideas?

I keep it really ugly. I never wash it, it's covered in dried on mud. Lots of electrical tape wrapped around parts etc.

I use a solid U lock for locking it up. The bike is so heavy i can just stick it through the wheel if no posts are around.

Write "SparkoMatic 20w" on the side of the controller!!! or scratch it all up and dirty. Another idea is to unplug the controller and take it with u!! The "drum brake" would likely not attract too much attention from thieves .

GPS PAGER FOR KIDS

alright guys, now things just got serious, id seen this a couple weeks ago and thought it was interesting but i didnt jump on it and quickly forgot, however being here with all you electrical wonderminds, im sure we can finally come up with some sort of implementation, there is a GPS for kids in bestbuy called littlebuddy, free for a year or something and then 0.99 for every page after that, not bad at all, trick is to keep it charged up all the time, we could somehow syphon charge from the main battery to power this thing, keep it like in 1 of the frame tubes ro somewhere where it cant be removed, and wait for the bike to get stolen, check this out, ALSO there seem to be deals on it every now and then so we should discuss the pricing scenarios first before jumping, looks like it can be found for $20 it seems like the perfect thing we need tho, im sure even best buy laughed when they said for kids, knowing full well itll probably be used for cheating couples spying etc

I like the idea a lot, the hardware is nice and affordable too. Best price I could find, oddly enough it's not on the Bestbuy site, was $30.00. It appears to be free for 30 days and then it's $15.00 a month thereafter, from the Insignia Little Buddy web site.

Where'd you find that info? Any mention of the pay-per-page plan where it's $0.99 for every time you request it's location? Only reason I haven't already bought one is I couldn't find mention of the pay-per-page plan on the official website and and worries they might do away w/ that plan in the future.

I think I would trust the Garmin "GPS/GSM Tracker" over the best buy insignia product. It cost $200, but includes the first year. $50 a year for standard tracking after that.

GTU 10 is a GPS locator that combines a web-based tracking service with GSM technology so you can keep watch on children, pets and property. Tracking the GTU can done on the web using any computer or by downloading the free Garmin Tracker app. If your phone can receive text messages or email, you can use GTU.

I really like the alarm bike cable and will def be ordering one. The GPS is cool buit I wouldn't want to have a monthly fee. For now what I do is I have one of the old xlite analog contollers that had the key switch for reverse. When I leave the bike locked up in a public area, in conjunction with a good bike lock, I unplug the power then use mu key to put the controller in reverse. Be pretty hard to ride off on the bike stuck in revers. And at 90 pounds running away with it over your sholder isn't going to be easy.

I'm getting that info from the Little Buddy web site, https://www.insignialittlebuddy.com/finder-bestbuy-family/welcome.htm, it's saying that the plan is $14.99 a month after the 30 free trial. I couldn't find any mention of a pay per page option, only a monthly plan. The pricing on the device itself is from the Google shopping search results.

Doc, That orgasm alarm made my day! Thanks for the lol!

Bionix comes with a safety device when turned on puts motor in the level 4 regenerative breaking mode. A thief either has to carry the bike away(pretty heavy) or be Lance Armstrong to ride it. Of course it's not a substitute for good locks, but at least it prevents thefts of opportunity.

If anyone could confirm that the LittleBuddy tracker has a pay-per-page option that'd be awesome.

I e-mailed the company and asked a few questions. Mostly about a pay as you go setup with their unit and below is the reply I got back.

Thank you for contacting Insignia Products about your NS-KDTR2. All of us here
at Insignia strive to provide the best quality products and a great customer
care experience, and we are very sorry to hear you have encountered some
trouble with the product.

At the time of your purchase of the little buddy, you have one month of free
service, after that you can subscribe for the service with a monthly fee, if
you do not get a subscription you will be charge for every single message that
you use.

At this time what i can recommend you is to subscribe to the service in that
way it is going to be cheaper for you. Those are the only plans that we have
available at this time

At this time I do not know what the cost would be for the each single message. My internet time is limited right now so if someone else could find this out would be great.

Tom

It was reported that each message costs $0.99. I think I going to have to snag one of these even though I have no money right now.

I got the LittleBuddy tracker for $23 on ebay. The pay-as-you-go plan is $0.99 per tracking, or you can do tracking every 2 minutes for an hour for $4.99. I've only used it in one part of town but the precision has averaged about 55 yards w/ it hidden deep in the battery bag, which narrows it's location down to about 1or 2 houses. If it doesn't move it seems to give the same location every time for awhile, so if you had a smart phone on the same network (it is believed it uses AT&T, but Best Buy won't say for sure) maybe you could track down it's location even more precisely by comparing the supposed locations. Maybe I'll test this out w/ a smart phone owning friend sometime. I've read battery life is 2 days even w/ heavy use, so I probably won't ever wire it to the bike's power so that it can be more hidden. Plenty of ways the bike could be stolen and not recovered, but for the price it certainly increases the chances a butt load.

well so my other bike got stolen a couple days ago, a really nice giant warp full suspension so things really got serious now, ive ordered some of the vibration sensor alarms and they should be in now but i think ill also be purchasing one of the little buddy things, for $20 its not bad at all, but we do have to checkout whats going on with the pay per ping plan then, best buy is supposed to be the company that handles it so they should know better, what would be ideal, is to have some setup where as long as you keep it charged up you dont have to pay until you did have to use it,

then, just drop it inside one of the tubes or something, and attach a cutoff car charger, give it an extension so that you can simply plug a usb chable to a vague looking cable or port, charge it and youre done, they sell wall AC ipod chargers to usb plug for like $1 on ebay, you could even drill a screw thru the frame tube, so that the gps cant be easily removed, for the kind of money we got on our bikes we really cant just be reliant on a couple locks, too bad this post doesnt get more attention because regardless of whether you keep your bike indoors as most of us do, a bike goes places and you may just end up chaining it to that one rail that ends up being the last

Do keep us posted on what exactly you find out about the pay ping plan on the lil buddy. I start school next month and even though my school is in a good part of town I don't like the idea of leaving my bike unatended for that long wile I'm in class/es. So I'm def interested. I know I'm puting one of those page alarm locks on it but the lil buddy seems like a good choice also.

I have third one, and I really like it. It's cheap, it's useful and it works. If you have any questions regarding this alarm, don't hesitate to ask :).

bobale, What worries me about the ones that attach to your bike, like this one and all the others posted, it seems like to me that it doesn't take very much movement for it to set them off. I can see me parking my bike in a rack with other bikes and just cause someone bumps my bike putting theirs in or taking it out, it goes off. Leaving me to constantly have to go shut it off, not to mention constant annoyance to other cyclists.

Indeed that is true, if you fasten it really tight to the bike it will go off easily. But it only reacts to suddent movements, if you move/shake it gently it won't go off.

Yes, in my LittleBuddy account it has the option for a pay-as-you go plan. The pay-as-you-go plan is $0.99 per tracking, or you can do tracking every 2 minutes for an hour for $4.99.
