Look like impressive

but... what compare to 4 x magicshine 900lumens !! for a total od 3600 LUMENS... in.. ALOT smaller size  40W total LED

I did a test and they are visible at at least ... 11km distance!! ( measured!)

11km! I know how fast you can go, Doc. Is that enough distance! :D

Doc,

You're going to blind a driver who ends up running over you. Isn't that kind of brightness illegal on a street? You're probably 2x the brightness you need, so please just throw 2 of your lights in the next box coming my way. Seriously though, don't you have some lower power lights that are obsolete to you that I can purchase for a bargain price?

John

Unless you're trying to see in offroad unlit conditions, then having one or a few really bright lights is less helpful than having large-surface area lights, or a lot of dimmer lights, at least as far as being seen by others is concerned, as well as not causing them to be unable to see other things on the road (that don't have their own lights).

I get blinded by a number of lighting conditions on the road, like spotlights intended to light up signs but are pointed the wrong way (out to the street rather than toward the buildings and/or upward), and cars or trucks with improperly-installed HID lighting that doesn't have a shade to keep it focused down on the road instead of up into the eyes of oncoming traffic, and extra-bright security spotlights people have on their porches that suddenly come on from motion detection, and are pointed down the street instead of their lawn, driveway, house, etc.

I see other drivers get blinded by the same things, in some cases reacting by slowing down, but most often by swerving away from the light (possibly subconciously), which usually means to their right when it's caused by oncoming traffic. That endangers anyone to their right, which most often is either parked vehicles, the next lane of traffic, bicycles, or pedestrians.

Since typically the parked vehicles and next lane of traffic are fairly large and often well-lit (even if just by reflectors), they don't usually get hit because of this.

But bicycles are small and hard to see, even with reflectors, and despite rules and common sense don't usually have rear lights on them. Pedestrians are just about invisible, as they almsot never have any kind of lighting or reflectors on them, and often wear darker clothing. So both of those either get hit or nearly so when the drivers swerve away from over-bright lighting, because the driver cannot now see quite as well as before, for a moment. You could argue that these types of targets either ought not to be there (pedestrians) or should be lit better (bicycles) but the problem wouldnt' happen as much if the overly-bright lights weren't causing the problem in the first place.

On DayGlo Avenger, when I had the large-surface area CCFL lighting from a scanner as my main be-seen headlight, I didn't have much of a problem with people seeing me even from quite a ways off, but it didnt' blind them either, when up close. I got a lot of comments that it was "bright" but when watching people's reactions to it they didnt' react like they did to actually really-bright lights on other vehicles, by swerving away or slowing down, but rather mostly like they would to normal headlights.

It isn't a really scientific test or study, but it has been my experience so far that more surface area of dimmer lights does more to help someone see you than a single point-source bright light (or several).

If your goal is to see other things, or see farther, then that's a different thing. :) It might still be accomplishable with the same end result of not blinding, using multiple smaller lights with long throws, focused onto one area ahead of you, though.

11 kms!! wow,i could use that here, were havin bear problems on the bike trail, well and cougars, could blind them good with your lights.

11kms?!?!

Well I am blinded by many car lights, so I would not feel bad for giving them a taste of light. Especially those new blue tint lights.

I wouldnt' feel bad about it either, except for what it may cause them to do (swerve and hit someone else). ;)

To the original question:(So you think you have enough lights?)

I would answer YES

To the question : (is that too much light for a bicycle?)

The answer is NO

The reason: each time i'm on an intersection of any road, I KNOW THAT EVERY DRIVERS AROUND KNOW I'M HERE....MY EBIKE IS SO VISIBLE !! AND NO REASON TO hit me in an accident with a car!

"BE VISIBLE for any drivers !" that's what a good cop said to me few years ago.

and i admit.. that since it happened I NEVER HAD ANY ACCIDENT OR DANGEROUS SITUATIO AGAINST ANY CAR DRIVERS.... OUT OF 9870km

There is no law about ebike and light.. but about car it is allowed to habe 55W light and 110W total for the head beam... My ebike have 40W LED... and the law mention Watts and not Lumens!

Today i'm 100% sure that these high lumens probably saved me alot of trouble or maybe accident or life!!

I never had any bad comments about my light from car drivers or pedestrian.

Something very interesting is that when i'm at an intersection.. there is often more than 50% of the car drivers that have their head pointing in my direction....

and... i know they know my presence... that's what i need... and i feel safer.

I repeat !.. more light can save your life or avoid you really bad situation....

The worst condition you can have is a driver that could ask you to turn them low or off.

The faster you go.. THE FASTER YOU NEED TO BE VIDIBLE..

and at 100kmh+.. WE MUST BE VISIBLE... or.... invisible...

For me thess LED are like a 160$ life insurance

you not only need to be visible.. but you need also to see perfectly where you go!!! and these 4 magicshines are the best combo i never had !

Doc

One of my friends who I turned onto magicshine bought a 35w flashlight(3000lumen), 1200 lumen driving light and a 1400. The 35 is mounted on the frame next to the head tube, 1200 is on his helmet and 1400 on the bars. it is brighter than most cars. Although he does have to recharge quite often I'd rather have docs set-up with the dc converter.

I have a 1400 and 900 ms and 2 MS taillights. I think that is plenty for where I ride. I only use the 1400 on my helmet at night the other 3 are mounted on the bike.

Hey GTR2EBIKE,

Do you have any photos of your light setup? I have 2 MS 900's up front, two Planet Bike SuperFlash blinkies, one on my helmet and one on my Topeak rear rack bag. I am thinking of getting the MS taillight that Doc showed me in CA. That light is tiny and puts out a lot of light.

Ambrose

Well, he's got me on flags too.

I only have 5 x 250 lumen Crees. I could use 10 Crees riding on a dark dirt road at 50kmh

Yes I do more of the tail lights, I've only used the 1400 once I always forget to mount it on my helmet when going somewhere at night or i'm just to lazy to mount it :D. I also had a PBSF but since I got the MS tail light it just sits in a box with other bikes parts. I have a few more pictures let me know if their are any others you'd like to see.
I started with one and ran it on flash mode 1 during the day and solid at night but realized for another 25 dollars(or however much the 2nd light head cost) I wanted a second one to be flashing at night.
The only problem with the lights are if you mount them on your seat post they face down but that didn't affect me because I have a rack and bag.

Got a Radbot 1000 1W rear LED at MEC for $17.50. Same price as the popular Planet bike's 0.5W superflash rear, but much brighter. Plan to run this during daytime also, hopefully alerting drivers to my presence. Though, I'm not sure that it is the drivers inability to see me that is the problem. It seems to often rather be their urgency to get ahead that makes them brush by too closely. Most of the close calls I've had are at 5PM when it is still perfectly bright outside, but the drivers seem more edgy and aggressive than at other times.

Yup smart move blinding car drivers in a tonne + of vehicle, that are also heading towards you...You can
definitely have too much lights on a road going bicycle IMO. All it will take is some 18 year old
tart on her mobile phone coming towards you getting an eye full of your blazing lights and you could be in a world
of hurt...or more like dead.

Thanks GTR2EBIKE,

The first picture of the double mount is very cool. Did you buy that somewhere or did you make it?

What are the two photos of the light in action. One seems to be with the car brake lights low and the other with the car brake lights on high.

Thanks,
Ambrose

Who said drivers are blinded?

Kim.. it's the road that i point with these LED.. not the drivers!

and YES you can be visible at 11km and not blind the drivers.

Just see the summarry:

Doc with his ebike = no accident
Car drivers doc cross with his ebike = no accident

total = no accident and doc is visible from any car drivers... what a great world!

Dah-um!! Something tells me that guy has been toking too much and has lost his night-vision because of it! Lol...plus where else would you get the idea for a four-level set of handlebars each FULL of lights.

And Doc... I think some folks may be suffering from some serious Lumenenvy :p

I made it for the most part. It's very simple. My topeak rack came with a mount for topeaks taillight. so I just screwed a piece of pvc to it, cut the original mount a little so the rubber bands would fit without rubbing anything and mounted the lights. I noticed they would rotate down slightly after a few rids so I put screws in the bottom of the pvc to stop them from moving.
The best part is I can take them on and off in 10 seconds, one bolt and it's on/off the rack.

Dr. Bass has it right. I noticed a major (positive!) difference in the behavior of drivers when I moved from a 10W halogen to the MS with an additional helmet light. As long as you keep your lights pointed slightly down, the annoyance factor shouldn't be too bad. I also wear a reflective vest at night (illuminite from Performance) just to make extra sure I'm seen.

Yeah cars think I'm a motor cycle!

A really slow motorcycle....that takes forever to get to the intersection....but if waiting an extra 5 seconds to turn is the worse thing to happen to them that day, then they had a pretty good day :)

BTW, I use $20 wal-mart fog lights with a 12v dc-dc converter and 50w halogen 12 degree spot bulbs. The total setup cost $50. I've noticed a guy in my area using the same lights as the main lights on his Ninja, so believe me they are bright!
