Hi! I have spent dozens of hours browsing this forum and browbeating its members ;) for the past couple weeks in order to just become a novice in this topic. While browsing I had an idea...is it possible to subdivide the battery technology forum into subtopics, one for each kind of technology? i.e. LiFe, LiPo, Nixx, SLA, other, etc? it would make it easier to find info, not only searching but also just from incidental browsing.

Thanks for all of your help and knowledge!

Lots of info here! Scan > sign on > Book mark topic of interest at the bottom of topic. Than later sign in > go to controll panel upper left > managage book marks. hope this helps

I agree battery tech need to be subdivided

I think a lot of things need to be subdivided here, and we need a regional forum also.

And FAQs rather than very, very, very long threads which take hours to get any useful nugget of info from.

I was thinking about writing some solid FAQs... But i am still learning. Looks like we've been getting newbie questions for a while though.

...i'm not complaining. This is one of the best damn internet forums i've been on in a long time.

I think that what would be much more useful than subdivisions and FAQs is a wiki, because we could all edit it and add articles, and it would be able to be far more organized than the discussion forum. :)

Just to be sure it didnt' get spammed, make it require a mod to grant you editing permissions, though anyone could read it.

I know that if we had had a wiki when I wasn't working much, for much of my first year here, I would have had time to transcribe a lot of existing ES stuff over into wiki articles (I don't have that kind of time, now, so it might only be less than a percent of the work I could have done). It's been suggested many times by at least a few people, but as far as I know there is still no ES-run wiki, attached to the forum itself (though there is or was a wiki started by someone else, that had gotten spam-destroyed at some point).

Lots of noobs never even look at the tech reference section. I agree though, that it would be nice to have a more complete basic knowledge area to send em to. The problem is, at least with battery anyway, is that it's evolving so fast. Not that long ago everything was really hopping about headways, and now that's becoming like ancient history. So working hard on a topic that will be old stuff in 6 months loses appeal for sure.

Anybody can write a good thread though, and if it's good enough it will get stickied. Or put a thread links thread up like I did, and send noobs there.

Too many categories become cumbersome imo, often times a topic does not belong in any real specific category ( or applies to too many of them for the OP to know where to put it ) and it ends up in the wrong spot and goes un-noticed, or the discussion takes it into another direction with usefull info that you would never see..

I also agree with dogman re things change fast in battery tech. If you go back a dozen pages it's funny to see how we are asking " have you seen this ? " and a few pages later it's sliced and diced lol..

There was talk of a Wiki at some point, knightmb made a post about it.. will try to dig it up..

Good comments! A wiki would be wonderful but would probably best be set up by teams of 3 on each topic, with the team first browsing the site for good threads to use, consolidating the info, and then putting together the info in a wiki. A better search function would really be helpful but there is still two problems to address. The first is that when I searched through ES I often found conflicting information. Sometimes it was because one of the answers was not correct but sometimes it was because someone was addressing only a part of the OP's idea or question. This is a problem with NOOB's because - transition into the second problem - many or most of the threads that contain useful info here are really detailed. They contain really excellent info but it is hard for a rookie to digest, or to be able to put several threads together to make something useful. That is why the posts I have made asking for overviews have been sooo helpful to me...and why the wiki idea would be good...and also why making subforums would also be helpful. Any tool that you can find to help manage the wealth of education here would be a major blessing. How about some flash tutorials? or open forum chats on a topic? I know these things sound like a lot of work..but I think it would save time in the long run for the 15-20 guru's that answer so many of the questions. After I learn something I often go back to the forum and search on my question. I am usually shocked to find out, now that I understand the words and ideas, that my question was repeated sometimes more than 20 times, but often in a slightly different form. I wonder how much time it took those people to answer that question 20 times? Maybe another thing to do also, you could come up with a 4-5 minute video and make watching the video mandatory before they can register here. The video should just be an overview of this site, showing the wiki, search feature, tutorials, etc. I know this would take a mountain of time - I was a computer teacher in my former life that did some lessons on video and multimedia - but the results saved so much time that I would gladly do it again if I had the opportunity.

I concur - this is one of (if not thee best) forums I have found on the internet. I think a close second would have to be the vcdhelp.com page, on multimedia. One of the differences between this topic and others is that actually trying to do something often requires a significant chunk of change, so it seems that people are more hesitant to go ahead without asking lots of questions. Multimedia editing, on the other hand can be done for almost free so people are more willing to jump in and get their feet wet. There are also possibilities with the technologies delved into on these pages to hurt yourself or others, but I don't think anyone has ever been hurt editing home movies unless it was because their mother-in-law hit them on the head with a stick because he included a picture of her putting her wig on....

Yeah, there's kind of a problem with that. That section contains lots of real specific, random stuff. A lot of the informational articles on here look like they're written by EE's for EE's ( go figure! ). It seems like there is a large population of non-genius on here so i think a dumbed down 'hold your hand' FAQ would be pretty damned helpful. Hell, i'd be willing to help write some.

I personally had to consult with mwkeefer and some other folk to fill in the missing gaps in my knowledge in order to build my first bike. It has been a process, that's for sure.

Wikis are cool, but i think it would be nice to keep all the info in one place.

"Wikis are cool, but i think it would be nice to keep all the info in one place."

That is what a wiki would do - put all of the info into one place. Right now it is spread over dozens, if not hundreds, of posts.

I've been on a lot of car forums and FAQs are how they do it. There is usually a sticky with a link to well written FAQs righat the top of each section.

Works fine for them. No easy collaborative editing, but at least everything's in one place. You start two sites and one will eventually get neglected.

Oops sorry. I am the guy who wants to put a large starter motor, Battery, relay and Go button, on a bicycle! interesting ?
Now have P.W.M !! electronics !! Wish I could just keep Electric , Electronics and Nuclear separate!! And now there's Lithium ?

Thanks ton all

It's real hard to keep up with the volume of stuff here and sorting out the good concise stuff from random comments is very time consuming.

There was a wiki at one time, but nobody populated it and it's gone now. Knightmb could probably bring it back. I think it's better if it all stays on one sitet though, and I don't think the forum software would easily support that.

I like the FAQ idea. People could write up a post containing an explaination or how-to of something and we could maybe have a special forum or sub-forum for those. That's kind of what the Technical Reference Area was supposed to be.

There is definately a great deal of good information on the board already. A FAQ could be built around this already published data. For instance, we could create a Master Infineon FAQ, broken down by board and topic. Such as:

Master Infineon FAQ
1)846 http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=7361 (Not sure how to make 846 the link)
a)Regen
i)BK to GND
ii)R12 mod
b)Cruise
c)...
2)116 http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=15099
a)blah blah blah

Knuckles has done some great write ups, but they are splintered. Even the same chip has multiple threads, which makes sense. Topics such as the "any voltage" mod needs its own discussion area, but it would be nice to see it related to all the other information.

So my point is, no need to recreate the wheel. We just need to get the wheel mounted. This way, we can focus the newbs on the important substance and they can bypass the incorrect/off topic stuff.
