Thread for new battery breakthrough PR releases

The usual weekly BS we got served for the past weeks. btw, BYD new supercharger is charging faster than the motorcycle showed in the video
Fast charging is nothing new, the difference is at the claimed 400Wh/kg energy density. Almost 20 years ago Aerovironment and Altairnano demonstrated 10 minute charging but the LTO chemistry had poor energy density.

What's the energy density of the latest BYD battery tho ? They have decent range (so I guess around 300Wh/kg) while charging faster than everyone else (Donut included). Therefore, if we can have 400wh/kg but while charging slower, is it really a solid state battery or just a glorified lithium cell

If you guys are talking about BYD's blade 2.0 cells, they are almost 1m long, so not really suited to be used in 2 wheelers.

Whether it's 2M long or in a squared motorcycle form factor, they could reach the same figures if they made the same chemistry as they did on the 2.0 cell

That's true. I was just adding some additional info. But you are right, their LMFP cell is a very interesting piece of technology. If I remember correctly, they even have two version, one high energy and one high power variant. I think the one with the 8C charging rate is the high power variant, the other has probably less than half of that.

Either 210WH/kg or 250Wh/kg if LFP or LMFP respectively.

Oh my god, I just watched the Donut Lab video and one spot just INFURIATES me.

At 4:25, the speaker says that "The EV industry also uses something called Maximum Capacity, which is Ah x Maximum Voltage".

Bro, what front are they trying to manufacture? This has got to be an actual scam because no one with an actual legitimate battery would make these kind of claims.

Agree with JRP3. If they’re quoting 400Wh/kg at 4.2V, that’s only ~343Wh/kg at nominal voltage. Still solid for fast charging, but nothing revolutionary yet. BYD’s LMFP is impressive on the C-rate side though
At this point, this is sounding like a pathetic joke.

They also mentionned something very unique that no one is mentionning is they could "apparently" shape it as they want

Just this alone would be revolutionnary, especially for light EV like ebikes since you could maximise the space used in any downtube, even with standard density figures.

I'm just calling it BS at this point. They haven't yet proved any major innovation backing their marketing campain. I expect nothing from them tbh.

Real innovation is only coming from TCL, BYD or most historic battery manufacturers. They don't make any 21700 anyway so why bother

Welp I guess this concludes the Donut saga. Nordic Nano Group's commercial director has filed a police report on Donut Lab, specifically for misleading marketing and false promises. He says that the key promises about the battery are false. (article in Finnish, on the largest Finnish newspaper) I don't have a subscription so can't provide more details, but other media will probably have their own reports on it sooner or later.

E. Translated comment from the CCO "According to Lauri Peltola, it has become clear to him over the course of the spring that the promised battery features, such as energy density and charging cycles, have not been met. He also states that a false impression has been given regarding mass production readiness."

Maybe not:

"Even more confusing, the CEOs of Nordic Nano and Donut have issued a rebuttal statement.

Donut Lab and Nordic Nano Group’s Statement Regarding a Criminal Complaint Filed by a Private Individual, April 17th Donut Lab and Nordic Nano Group have today been informed that an employee of Nordic Nano has filed a criminal complaint against Donut Lab. The companies do not know the exact nature of the complaint. In addition to the complaint, the individual has contacted media representatives and provided confidential company information to the press. Furthermore, the individual has made claims concerning Donut Lab, despite not having the necessary knowledge of battery technology or the overall picture of the development work. The individual is not a shareholder of Nordic Nano Group, nor are they involved in the working group developing Donut Lab’s battery. Nordic Nano Group does not share these views of a single individual."

Well obviously the scammers will deny being scammers. Pretty funny that they claim that this person isn't fit to speak about the batteries because he doesn't know the details, when based on Helsingin Sanomat's reporting Donut themselves don't know enough.

Based on the emails that HS saw CT-coating develops the tech, nordic nano is supposed to make the cells and donut just productizes it. Donut has emailed CT-coating for battery specs and measurements etc to give to investors and CT-coating just ghosts them. CT-coating is apparently not happy with the claims being made (at ces) and these supposed magical cells are apparently no longer even being developed.

Looks like half a 4680, so 4640? At first I wondered why not just use existing 4680 format but that probably wouldn't allow enough cells in series to get a usable voltage.
Depends on the chemistry. 🙂
Works if it’s NMC/NCA.

Nope, it doesn’t work, I misread his post. 😔
