I have this kit

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CL2NWUY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

its a brushed motor geared drive- would it be good idea or bad idea to open up the gear reduction housing and grease the drive ring and pinion?

as far as the controller goes, does it need to be mounted in an open environment, or closed off in a box or bag to protect against water intrusion?

also, new to ebikes in general, does anyone have experience with similar kits? how would you rate your experience

Nothing you need to maintain inside that motor.

In my desert climate, an enclosed controller overheats. In a wet enough climate, water could be the worst enemy. Even in my climate it does rain, so I do not put the controller in a wet place, like right where a wheel slings water on it. On top of the rear wheel, with some kind of fender, home made or regular, between it and the controller is my favorite place. If riding in the rain, your ass will wind shadow it, and the fender keeps the wheel water off it.

thanks for the input, I suppose I will leave it open but water proofed. maybe a removable housing that can be removed in good weather.
and I am surprised the gears don't get lubed.. it may already be. its not due to arrive for a few days

There have been a lot of discussions about waterproofing controllers, so you might poke around for that or similar phrases. Some are in their own threads, others are inside other discussions.

There's also multiple threads about waht greases/etc to use with various geared hubs (but they should already have grease in them).

Should be lubed already, but it might make noise like its not, if the gears are all metal.
